What does everyone have against Lino? It is cheap, durable, more forgiving than tiles, gets damaged less than wood.....What does everyone have against it? Why are tiles so much more popular? Am i missing something or is this just my inner dag speaking out? Thanks, Re: LINO - What doe severyone have against it 2Jan 28, 2009 12:00 pm We are getting vinyl throughout our living and kitchen areas of our new home - the designs are endless, less than $100pslin mtr laid! that's half carpet and for all the reasons you say, with 2 kids under 2yo, we don't want accidents on knees etc, no breaking glasses, doesn't show dirt/dust (we have pets too) and we have vinyl in our current home, and people always think it's real parquetry!!! go figure... we are doing timber look again (old oak) at the new place...

Annie Hi Annie, I'd be interested to know which vinyl you chose? We are considering Karndean but I guess there's others. Thanks JB Re: LINO - What doe severyone have against it 6Jan 28, 2009 12:24 pm For me - to be brutally honest here - I think it looks kind of cheap. I'm not spending all the hundreds of thousands of dollars that I am on my house to only cheapen it by putting in lino. Yes I've seen all the new stuff - Kardean and the like but it just doesn't look or feel right to me. Re: LINO - What doe severyone have against it 7Jan 28, 2009 12:34 pm It doesn't add anything to the room, it has no presence. Tiles bring coolness and wood brings depth and warmth.
Also theres no wow factor, no-one will ever say "ooo, love your vinyl" Building Upside down house in Wantirna VIC Current Stage: Procrastination... it's just all too hard.... I went into a display home thinking they were wood floors, but couldn't work out why the echo noise wasn't happening, so I asked what they put under the wood and the salesperson laughed saying it was polyflor, which was strips of lino stuck down.... (And it wasn't just me, he said they get that all the time) Re: LINO - What doe severyone have against it 10Jan 28, 2009 9:39 pm Another vote for vinyl.... we have a one year old and plan on one dog at least - our old dog slipped on wood and scratched it and I hate dirty grout lines - so its vinyl for us - gerflor, forbo or karndean. Re: LINO - What doe severyone have against it 11Jan 28, 2009 10:03 pm Hi Mr Bond, I have the sample here (they cut it for me) but it doesn't have the full name on it. We will find out within a week or so, if you still want to know, pm and I'll let you know as soon as I know. I can try and find it on the net too.
But I have to say that we have vinyl now, and we laid it (ie poorly) and we constantly get compliments about our wooden floors, until people realise there is no sound when they walk on it and then they say, hey what is this??? So people may not come in and say "hey I love your vinyl" - but they do like it. I don't believe they cheapen a house at all, but I guess that;s just personal opinion. I do know one thing, it's cheap enough to update if you want to change or update in 5 or so years, but carpets and tiles ??? hmmmm So I say go for it, but I must say I still love carpets and tiles (maybe when no more kiddies!) Within a month it was ripped up and replaced with beautiful porcelain. It looks spectacularly good, and with grout sealed, there is no discolouration. A massive contrast to the dull and cheap (and new) vinyl that was down. Re: LINO - What doe severyone have against it 13Jan 29, 2009 5:01 pm I have to agree with the fact you spend alost of money building a new home to put lino in it.I am having tiles why self , but lino does have it place if you want something cheap I guess. But when I look at lino I didnot find it much cheaper than tiles I must have been looking at the most expensive one I guess.I have had lino in the past I found it dents and marks easily and it was not hard to rip it and that lino was about 130sqm for rembener that was about 2 houses ago now finished building 40 square home on 5 acres with perry homes.working on the landscaping just finished pool deck with ://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=2217 Re: LINO - What doe severyone have against it 15Jan 30, 2009 1:51 pm We put lino down in one of our rental properties whilst we were living there last year. Because we made the kitchen and dining rooms into one open plan space we wanted something to do both areas. We had lino that looked like rich merbau coloured timber flooring. Fooled a lot of people whenever they came to visit - they all thought it was real timber at first glance.
It was easy to keep clean however the dinting from furniture as well as the ease in damaging it - ie DH dropped a drill onto the floor and put a gash into the lino - would be the only bad points. It was lovely and soft to walk on - much prefered it over the tiles that are in this home we are renting at present. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: LINO - What doe severyone have against it 16Jan 30, 2009 6:59 pm OK "lino" is daggy - and I doubt it's even available any more. Linoleum - seen it around lately? And I'm being pedantic ... back to the point:
We had vinyl in our old house for years, in the kitchen. It was an economical option at the time (young, new homeowners, no money ) and we bought the best that was available at the time. I think it was Rhinofloor or one of those super-hard wearing ones. It cleaned up well, was soft underfoot, breakages weren't a problem, and we had no issues with denting - but we had no furniture in the kitchen, so that wasn't likely. But we always felt that it was a poor relation, and it really didn't look like anything but vinyl. We changed to tiles some years later when our finances were in a better state. Maybe the new ones are better, but I saw Karndean at a home show and just thought "Yuk". Re: LINO - What doe severyone have against it 17Jan 30, 2009 7:30 pm I think there are some fabulous good quality linos. BUT unfortunately some of the cheap and nasties give lino a bad rep. IN this rental we are currently in( brand new rental) they have put down cheap lino. Its not stuck down and it started to warp and buckle where we sit all the time within 8 months. It doesn't like rollable computer chairs obviously. We've tried placing a big carpet remnant under the chairs but nothing is helping. it buckling right across the room . I don't know what they'll do when we move. It might be able to be stretched and glued down but I suspect it will need to be replaced. I just hope they don't blame us. As far as I'm concerned it's "wear and tear" without the tear.
Also depending on what shoes you wear there is a funny noise when you walk on it. and I hate the denting. We put felt on most of our furniture legs etc but it still dents. Re: LINO - What doe severyone have against it 18Feb 04, 2009 9:47 am https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.p ... 048#161048
I just found a picture of the vinyl we used in our rental 18mths ago. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: LINO - What doe severyone have against it 19Feb 06, 2009 7:42 am My husband grew up with cork floors, whenever we talk about flooring, he says he wants cork again. You can drop a sharp knife and it just anchors itself in the cork, you can pull it out and it doesn't leave a mark, glasses bounce and plates stay in tact .... so he tells me.
Can't say I like the thought of cork, the image in my mind isn't exactly stylish but maybe it isn't so bad.
