Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Jan 15, 2009 3:54 pm Oh BOY!
Some of you will be aware that my dishwasher was stupid and then leaked everywhere in the cavity and behind the cabinetry and onto the carpet and blah, blah. Well, I originally thought that just the grout on the kickboards, the kickboards themselves, and parts of the cabinets around that small area would require any sort of repair or replacement (through insurance), but I got a quote yesterday, and wow… We have to apparently have half our entire kitchen replaced! This includes all the cabinets and cupboards along one side, removing the sink and stove and then replacing them again because the bench top will need to be replaced, just because it’s attached to the damaged cupboards and apparently they can’t remove a bench top and have it remain in one piece without cracking (I’ve heard this before), and then there is another, higher and narrower, bench top that will also need to be replaced, and all the backing on the bar will need to be replaced as it’s damaged. We will also need a new splashback and kickback tiles and grout. WOW. Is this alright? I mean, the builder is a proper, genuine and very professional company, used for insurance things and non-insurance things. The splashbacks and bench tops aren’t damaged, but they just can’t replace part of the kitchen, as it’s all attached and joined together. I guess this is standard…it’s just hard to imagine that the insurance company will be ok to pay for all of this when really it’s just a relatively smallish area that’s actually damaged! If it IS ok though, it’s pretty cool for us. Not that we EVER planned this or wanted this damage to occur, we were quite stressed out by it. But we now get to choose new bench tops, splashback and kickboard tiles! This is really exciting for us! The existing ones are fine and nice, but not 100% what we’d ideally have chosen…obviously any added expense we would pay, but the actual replacement and equivalent value replacements and labour will be covered entirely. Also, we were wanting to get a new sink but were going to push that back because of the expense of having it installed and the insinkerator removed. But now, since these builders will have to remove the existing sink and then put it back once the new bench top is fitted anyway, it makes no difference to them if they put in a new sink or the existing old sink, does it? So…we can pay for the new sink but not have to pay for the plumber’s labour!!! Lol. (obviously the new sink will need to be exactly the same size as the old one, which is fine) Oh, and we got a new dishwasher last weekend. It’s yet to arrive in the store but we’re very excited about its eventual delivery! It’s a Dishlex and looks really good. I cannot WAIT to actually use it and for it to be finished its cycle in a normal time period and for it to actually WORK! Does anyone find it weird that so much of our kitchen has to be replaced? Is it “*******”? It’s cool for us, but in a way I’d be sad to lose our existing kitchen. There’s really nothing wrong with it. How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! I think that's great news grace_slick You get a whole new kitchen that you don't have to pay for!!! See, all that persistence with your dishwasher paid off in the end Look forward to seeing your choices for the new kitchen! Re: Insurance claim for kitchen…so many repairs! 4Jan 15, 2009 9:06 pm Thanks Donuts! Yes, we're quite excited and pleased about it (tentatively. It may not happen like how I described, depending on the insurance company. If this quote is very high, they will want a 2nd one, and if that one only says to replace the bits that are damaged, even if it ends up not matching the existing - insurers have no obligation to match existing things - then they'll go with that one instead)
TDL, don't you worry! I won't be making paranoid/worried/longwinded threads about any of this. I'll merely be browsing eagerly through the many colours and materials for ideas for the new bench top, splashback and kickboard things. How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Re: Insurance claim for kitchen…so many repairs! 5Jan 15, 2009 10:05 pm It's quite usual to have to replace a lot extra when part of a kitchen is damaged - particularly when it's an older kitchen and the laminates and other finishes can't be matched.
I'd be very surprised if another company quoted only on replacing the damaged sections. Apart from the problems matching surfaces, it wouldn't be worth their while... A few years back we had a fire that damaged a garden shed and some of its contents. The grass catcher on our two-year-old mower was melted, but the mower itself was fine. The insurance company replaced the mower anyway. We weren't about to argue - we gave the old mower to my sister and enjoyed our nice new one. Re: Insurance claim for kitchen…so many repairs! 6Jan 16, 2009 3:57 pm Cool. I have to get a second quote, but fingers crossed they'll say much the same thing as the first people! How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Hi there, long-time lurker but first time posting. I've bought a house 2 and a bit years ago and last year we had some major water damage on a converted pergola area… 0 5771 I apologise for any confusion, but your understanding is correct.
