Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Jan 05, 2009 1:54 pm Hi All
I am currently working through my selctions for the interior and I was just wondering what people think. I am very very new at selecting colours and don't really have much idea except I like the brown colour schemes. The kitchen has polished concrete flooring and for the cupboards I am looking at this colour from Formica - Chocolate Pear Then for the benchtop I am looking at this colour from Laminex - Quicksand Natural Finish. The splashback will then be plain white tiles and then I am hoping to get some type of brown tone paint for the walls. I am going to use the same bench and cupboard selections for the vanity cupboard in the bathroom as well. I have attached a plan of the kitchen. Aplogies about the images as I'm not sure how to change the placement of the images. Do people think this will be too dark? And what do you think of the bench top colour of Quicksand? Is there a better laminate to match the Chocolate Pear colour? Also I am thinking of adding a pantry cupboard at the end of the fridge, but does anyone know how much extra this might cost? Would I be looking a couple of hundred extra or more towards the $1000 mark? It only needs to be the same height as the fridge and not very wide. Thank you for your help It's much appreciated. Also has anyone used darker browns in their kitchen? Photos would be great Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: Kitchen colour selections - Help 2nd thoughts (Karaboard?) 2Jan 05, 2009 2:31 pm Im not a fan of dark chocolates as they date too quickly.
However Fini Chocolate by formica looks stunning used horizontally. and Laminex Ash Dust for the benchtop done in squareform or similarly Duropal white myriad in quadra adds the wow factor. In terms of the bathroom vanities im a believer in keeping most things seperate thus the colours shouldnt all be the same in kitchen and bathroom. How about laminex oyster linea for the doors and either the ashdust or white myriad for the top. That way the bathroom is a lighter colour and dosent reapeat. Kitchens are like finger prints, no two are ever the same!! Fini Chocolate was one of the original colours I had considered and I quite like Ash Dust. I'm not quite sure about the Oyster Linea though.
Even though the unit is small is it still good to have different in the bathroom and kitchen? I am quite confused with kitchen colours (looking at too many kitchen displays) as I would really like a darker benchtop so that it may not show up accidental stains. Do you have any suggestions for a darker colour benchtop to go with the fini chocolate? Cupboards: Fini Chocolate horizontal Benchtop: ???? Splashback: White tiles or glass splashback (but what colour?) Paint: not sure Thank you for your help. I’m pretty busy today and tonight. You have a window in the kitchen, plus the sliding door in the living area should let plenty of light in.... I'm just concerned that too many surfaces finished in dark colours may make the room seem small and dark.
If you're going for a white splashback, that will lift the overall colour scheme, but personally, I'd stick with a lighter benchtop, especially if you're going to use a mid-toned brown on the walls. Laminates these days are very hard-wearing and stain-resistant, so I wouldn't worry about that as an issue. I can't help with the pantry price, but it shouldn't be a huge cost for a simple cabinet unit with shelves and a door. We added a couple of pot drawers to our kitchen at a cost of about $170 - but of course, that didn't involve a change to the benchtop or carcass. So the lighter colour benchtops don't stain much? In that case maybe:- Cupboards: Chocolate Pear or another brown colour recommendation? Bench: Laminex abyssinian stone or Laminex Ash Dust or... Splashback: white tiles or a glass splashback Is this sounding ok? I'm really appreciative of all help as I'm really bad at colours. Thank you Kristy Re: Kitchen colour selections - Help 2nd thoughts (Karaboard?) 8Jan 07, 2009 3:48 pm We had light grey stone-look laminate in our old kitchen (I posted a pic here here: http://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?t=12342) and over 6 years, I never had a problem with stains.
I picked a lightly textured finish, as I don't trust my kids not to drag sharp objects across the bench... There were some small scratches, but they were invisible to anybody except me. I think the high gloss finsihes these days are tougher than they used to be though, and if you don't have feral children, it's probably not an issue. Re: Kitchen colour selections - Help 2nd thoughts (Karaboard?) 9Jan 07, 2009 6:31 pm Thanks Kek, that makes me feel better as I do like the contrast between the dark wood cupboards and light benchtops... Now need to work out the exact colours Re: Kitchen colour selections - Help 2nd thoughts (Karaboard?) 10Jan 07, 2009 7:24 pm I like the Fini Chocolate, very nice, but as you have said you have a small kitchen? You need to watch too many dark colours in a small space, it will pull the space in.
I’m lost, lots going on in this post. So which colours are you thinking of? My Original thought for the cupboards was Chocolate Pear and the Quicksand Laminex for the top, but people have given other suggestions. What do you think Michelle, I am very open to your opinion as I am struggling to picture my kitchen. Thank you very much Michelle Kristy Re: Kitchen colour selections - Help 2nd thoughts (Karaboard?) 12Jan 07, 2009 8:16 pm Who owns the chocolate Pear? Lamniex? Thank you Michelle Kristy Re: Kitchen colour selections - Help 2nd thoughts (Karaboard?) 16Jan 07, 2009 9:22 pm Fitnhealthy……white is the rage at the moment, tomorrow it will be another colour.
I for one NEVER go with trends! I like your colour selection,….why? Because it’s different! The Qucksand is light enough for a small kitchen, so that’s a good thing also. If I didn’t think it would go I would tell you. I am very happy to stick to my original colours. Now I wish the joinery place would hurry up and open so I can make it formal so I stop thinking about other colours. Re: Kitchen colour selections - Help 2nd thoughts (Karaboard?) 18Jan 09, 2009 10:31 am I have just found an image of the Chocolate Pear in a kitchen very similar to the way mine will be set up and it looks fantastic.
I have attached the kitchen below. Ignore the island, the cupboards above, and it is the same shape and style as mine will be. My fridge will go where the pantry is. Wow I am excited after seeing this picture. I also love the look of the Glass Splashback. I hope I can afford to get something similar. Would I have to go that high for the splashback? Thanks Kristy Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: Kitchen colour selections - Help 2nd thoughts (Karaboard?) 19Jan 09, 2009 12:13 pm i wouldnt splashback all the way to the top if your on a budget.
Its a good idea for something different and if you have excess dollars to play with:) If the wall is that same colour as the splashback you will still have the same effect just without the reflection Your right about the image, that kitchen looks pretty darn good:) I havent seen the chocolate pear on a finished kitchen before so im now a convert to its appeal.
