Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Jan 05, 2009 1:35 pm Does anyone have thoughts on a kitchen place v a joiner/ cabinet maker?
Would also appreciate any recommendations for the Sydney region We're looking at creating a small galley kitchen with white glossy vacuum formed cabinets. Thanks! Re: Joiner/Cabinet Maker v Kitchen Place 2Jan 05, 2009 2:47 pm It depends on a lot of things.
Personally I would only go with a cabinet maker - If i wanted a complicated custom job - if i knew them personally - have seen there work - have been recommended by someone close. With the kitchen places you can go far wrong with established businesses, if they have been around for 25years they must be doing something right! With both of the above you will also have the low, medium and high quality brackets. You can get a dirt cheap kitchen from the auctions or get ******* joe and his backyard shed to knock u up a quick job. You can go flatpack kitchens which have been proven to be better than some cabinet makers attempts as they have been manufactured by CNC machine. Ultimately the high end kitchens end up using cabinet makers anyway! In the end you have to do the research and be comfortable parting with how many thousands of dollars. If you are unsure give the dept of fair trading a call and see if complaints have been laid against the prospective company/individual. Working at a kitchen place myself, i do see the benefits for both however it does really depend on the customer. Kitchens are like finger prints, no two are ever the same!! " But realistically, you will get what your research gives you. The quality of some cabinet makers jobs we've seen are on par with jobs that you would get at Harvey Norman, Impala Kitchens etc and than there are jobs which are built to last you 3times their life.
We went on Sunday to visit some display homes and my fiancee was disgusted at their kitchens, but thats because he's an expert at what he does. To anyone else, they would probably be more than happy with their job. My fiancee's family business is one of the most well-known and respected Cabinet Making businesses in the Greek community but is not a "kitchen place". If you were to hear there name you would think they are noone whereas someone else would hear the name and know the name of everyone in the family without having met us. We then branched off to our own business, which is by no means comparable in size/reputation but my fiancee ends up building atleast 1/3 of the kitchens for his Dads business and in turn we're building our own rep aswell. Do your research and ask to see jobs which are currently in construction (that way you know what their typical standard of work is and not just what they use as 'showroom' pieces).
