Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Jan 24, 2007 1:28 pm We want to update our kitchen with new doors and also install a new underbench oven / cooktop, which will need some carpentry. We are having trouble finding the right people to carry out this work - any ideas where we should start ? lots of Kitchen places aren't interested. How do you get new cook tops / ovens installed - when they require more than just a plumber / electrician?
help! Re: Updating an existine kitchen - not building a new one 2Jan 24, 2007 4:38 pm Firstly where are you?
The kitchen mobs will often pass you over for a number of reasons: 1) Small job - fiddly with low return as a lot of the charges will be for labour not materials. 2) Replacing only doors is often not fun - depending on how the doors were hung originally. 3) Introducing a new carase into an existing system for your underbench oven and inset cooktop is another potentially time consuming job. More than 50% of a kitchen will be in the doors and tops. How old is the kitchen? If you are replacing the doors there is a good chance that the carcasses could probably do with replacing as well. Where was the oven/cooktop originally? Will you be cutting a new hole in your existing top or are you filling the void of the old unit? My best suggestion would be to try and contact an installer/handlyman rather than a carpenter or a cabinetmaker. You should really only need an electrician to install a new oven/ cooktop ensemble (unless it is gas, then you also need a plumber). I'm in Sydney, kitchen is 13 yrs old but cuoboards and benchtop are just fine and I'm still happy with configuration. I'm replacing doors because they are a little dated (panelled) and they're vinyl vacuum covered, which has started to lift around the oven. (this hapened after about 5 yrs) Also I want a bigger oven / cooktop and that will necessitate some work. I'm planning to put them into the existing bench but make the holes bigger by losing a cupboard. Have now managed to find a couple of carpenter / handymen who will come and give a quote! Yay! Kind Regards H That is a really good attitude Akin to you catch more flies with honey than vinegar.
