Hi
Currently looking at induction cooktops.
Has anyone recently purchased an induction cooktop? If so what brand and model.
Also what would you say the pros and cons are compared to just a ceramic cooktop.
Thanks

Currently looking at induction cooktops. Has anyone recently purchased an induction cooktop? If so what brand and model. Also what would you say the pros and cons are compared to just a ceramic cooktop. Thanks Re: Induction Cooktops 2Dec 31, 2008 2:19 pm My Mum got one a couple of years ago and it replaced her ceramic one. She loves it - but she can't get gas so not sure if she would love it over gas.
Anyway she got a Miele and it was around $3,000 from memory. I personally dont like it, few reasons : 1. She needed a whole new set of cookware - it was amazing what wouldn't work on it (I shouldn't complain about this as I got her old set). 2. THe surface is slippery so as someone who can never line up a saucepan correctly it turns off on me all the time. 3. It retains heat more than I'd like. Sure its better than the ceramic but when I spilt over the gravy on Christmas day the house still stank for at least half an hour. 4. It could just be the pots that Mum got but generally the pots are heavier (I guess the metal factor) which means that some of the pots need to be lifted with two hands and not able to be safely lifted at all by my grandmother or my young niece. 5. Hard to clean - sure theres "stuff" you get but it took me ages to get the gravy off. PRO It looks good The hi-techness of it is kinda cool. it's miele three plate (reason we chose 3 is i never have more than 3 pots/frypans going at one time!) have to disagree with ozkarnak...sorry! 1. got free set of amazing pans with the cooktop - pretty sure this deal is still going?! (if you ever need more good brands have a little symbol on them to tell you they work with induction - if you want to be sure take a magnet shopping with you if it sticks to the bottom its good) 2. i don't personally have a problem with any sliperyness?! 3. i think it actually retains less heat than our old electric...that was also one of the big selling points the salesman used showing us in the showroom how quickly you can touch the plate again after use 4. our pots are no heavier than our old ones 5. you get a great little scrapey thing with it...works a treat. must admit it shows smudge marks unless my man cleans it...more muscle! but so did the electric. another pro...it's quick!! we got rid of our electric kettle and bought a nice red stovetop kettle...looks great as a permanent kitchen feature and is quicker than the old kettle to boil the water!!! Re: Induction Cooktops 5Dec 31, 2008 7:11 pm I may of given a different review of it prior to the christmas day gravy incident - but it was only last week so its still a little raw .
Better than ceramic definitely and no comparison to normal electric. Yes super quick - but I'd still go gas if the choice is between the two as I find it incredibly hard to to regulate the heat. I am now thinking about an Induction Cooktop. Has anyone ever heard of this brand before?Aikae?? Here is an EBay link. http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll ... :middle:au I am seriously thinking about getting one of these but would like to hear from some wiser souls than myself... If you choke a smurf... what colour do they turn? Re: Induction Cooktops 8Jan 22, 2009 7:06 pm My Mum got induction when it was somewhat new about 4 years ago. She got a Brandt one (kleenmaid) and it's not that good. It has 4 circles the size of a small pot. If you put a medium frypan on one of the circles and try to cook steak if half the steak is on the circle and half off the steak will be cooked on one half and raw on the other. My biggest advice would be to get one with a VERY LARGE cooking area. It's great for melting chocolate though and boils water really fast. Does a terrible stirfry and the new stirfry induction add-ons are about $3000 - gas looks good to me!! I'm think of getting a domino set which includes 2 induction cookers and 2 gas. Best of both worlds!! Re: Induction Cooktops 9Jan 22, 2009 9:26 pm cascre Does a terrible stirfry and the new stirfry induction add-ons are about $3000 - gas looks good to me!! It is difficult to find consistent figures on gas-induction equivalents: One website quotes: 1 kW induction = 7.5 MJ gas http://theinductionsite.com/selecting.shtml This considers efficiency losses from gas. Most domestic gas burners don't exceed 15MJ The highest rated domestic burner I have seen is 21 MJ A commercial wok burner (the ones you see in Asian restaurants) rates around 60MJ or higher. I have seen 7.5kW induction burners advertised. If you are doing serious home stir-fry you are probably looking at a 2.5 to a 3.0 kW induction burner. |
