Browse Forums Kitchen Corner Re: Narrow galley kitchen 21Dec 22, 2008 1:47 pm Definitely the slimmer cabinets would make access for two easier, especially if one has bad knees.
I'm a lover of wall ovens, much better for your back. Also for what you lose in bench space, you gain in storage anyway i.e. three drawers under the cook top. Don't you just love the dilemma of small apartment kitchens, it brings out the innovation in designers! Kitchens are like finger prints, no two are ever the same!! SmartPack did the kitchens for Channel 9's Home Made TV Show Re: Narrow galley kitchen 22Dec 24, 2008 5:09 pm Because we've now reverted to the shallow cabs on the counter side, we've had to leave out some of the suppliers who had quoted since they only offer 600 deep cabs (one suggested we could knock down the wall, reduce the wardrobe space in the bedroom and thus have their 600 cabs - Yeahrightt!).
So it looks like a custom job - unless anyone knows of a supplier with shallow cabs as standard (apart from Ikea). With the original 600 cabs both side design, we were going to have white gloss handless doors, black granite counter/splash with silver fleck (black galaxy) and a black plinth. The handless doors were to minimise the intrusion into the narrow space between cabs. However, I've been looking in the design books and website and feel that if we have the shallow cabs one side we have room for shallow handles. Plus white kitchens are so common.... So now my thoughts are to go with black gloss doors, black/silver flaked granite (emerald pearl), silver glass (or stainless) splashback, silver plinth and long square-edged horizontal handles on the doors. We also went to look at appliances at Harvey Norman (which took ages due to cow manure from sales rep). Selected: Fan Oven Miele H 5240 B $1,999 Hood Miele DA 3060 $2,599 Dishwasher Miele G 1162 SCVi $1,799 Warmming Drawer Miele ESW 5080-14 $1,399 Miele Total $7,796 (less 5% rebate = $7,406) Integrated Fridge/Freezer Miele KFN 977 iDE $3,499 Hob Unit Highland HT3CN/L ? Grand total $10,905 + the Hob Unit. Tried to get a deal on Miele but no dice apart from Miele rebates - has anyone else managed to negotiate better prices on Miele? BTW the rep told us that the Miele Appliance Package Offer 2 rebate will go up to $7.5% (from 5%) on 1st Jan 2009 (and may include a fridge/freezer) but the the value required will go up to $12,500 Also the Package Offer 3 will go up to 10% but must include fridge/freezer and value over $25K. I'm still undecided on the floor - we have stained/varnished wooden floorboards (see photo) throughout in poor condition with some new boards that don't match. We planned to get it sanded back and revarnished - but the lighter new floorboards would still have to be matched. Now have thoughts about painting the whole lot black, including the kitchen, or have a vinyl/tiled floor in the kitchen and bathroom but still paint the boards elsewhere. I know black floors are a bugger to keep clean but we're 8 floors up, don't have pets and there's only 2 of us - any thoughts? Re: Narrow galley kitchen 23Dec 24, 2008 5:26 pm my only comment is avoid the tiles unless you meant vinyl tiles. As someone with very bad knees I can only advise you to avoid the hardness of a tiled floor.
Ouch! Good luck with your reno. Re: Narrow galley kitchen 24Dec 24, 2008 6:17 pm Hope you don't have young kids as the black cabinets will mark. Handles are good, just get a smooth one without sharp bits in case you bump them when you walk past.
Miele set their own prices so you can't negotiate with the dealer (shop where you buy the product.) I actually think this is great... nothing bugs me more than buying something and seeing it cheaper elsewhere the next day. Hope your design works well for you. It looks great. Hi Pewit, Do you really mean the DA3060 60cm slide out rangehood? It should be $699, not $2599. Unless you were looking at the Miele DA2210 110cm concealed rangehood, which is $2599. Also many Miele items are going up in price next month, including some ovens, fridges and rangehoods. But the H5240 oven, as i can remember, still sells for $1999 for stainless steel and $1799 for black or white. Re: Narrow galley kitchen 26Dec 27, 2008 7:13 pm Oops - typo - it should be the DA3060 60cm for $699.
Do you think it would be worth our while to order this lot before the end of the month? Also I've found out that Miele do a black version of the M82611 built-in Microwave - although it's not shown on the current AUS price list - presumably they can do special orders? Regards Paul Re: Narrow galley kitchen 27Dec 28, 2008 11:24 am Hi paul,
I don't think miele do special order, but you can try anyway. Miele has a much bigger range in europe but many aren't available in australia unfortunately. I think the stainless steel microwave will look fine with the black oven since the microwave has more black than stainless steel anyway. And the black highland cooktop has a stainless steel control panel on the front which will match well with the microwave. I don't have the new miele price list handy so i can't work out whether you'll save more now or later, but as i can remember the fridge you're looking at will in up $100, the dishwasher's still the same price for the moment. Can't remember the rangehood though. Check with your harvey norman, they should have a new price list and work out the difference for you. Yes, they should have told us about the price rise when we were there - I wondered why the rep didn't push to close the sale - funny that I think we'll be ordering from elsewhere. Re: Narrow galley kitchen 30Dec 28, 2008 4:17 pm I just remember, the highland cooktop you're looking at is about 85cm long but the miele rangehood is only 60cm. You might want to get the 90cm rangehood instead, especially when the highland cooktop has the wok burner on the side. Re: Narrow galley kitchen 31Dec 28, 2008 6:30 pm Yak_Chat A late entry into the design phase Rather than try to squeeze all that in and have 2 doorways. Is it possible to close off a doorway so you do not loose the space at one end? Nope - the doorway at the back right of the kitchen leads to a fire escape - so we can't close it off. In theory we could close off the other end - but that would mean going out of the unit - into the fire escape stairway - out onto the balcony and into the kitchen via the back exit to get to the kitchen from the rest of the unit! Re: Narrow galley kitchen 33Dec 29, 2008 9:37 pm As Mile are raising prices on 1st Jan (and we doubt they'll come down soon) we went to Domayne Alexandria today and put down a deposit on the Miele appliances - now all we need is for the cabinet maker to come back from holiday and for the architect (needed for the rest of the reno) to get moving so we can submit the DA.
Thanks for input to date - watch this space!
