Has anyone used acrylic for their kitchen splashback? If so how do you find it?
I know you can not use it behind the cooktop.

I know you can not use it behind the cooktop. I had some samples sent out to me from www.akril.com.au, really easy to scratch was our outcome. We decided to pay the premium and go all glass instead. The samples they sent out make for really nice coasters though! LOL IMO, using akril to do a bathroom would be much better suited. Re: Acrylic Splashback???? 3Dec 04, 2008 8:29 am was Akril really that easy to scratch? I mean if its only used for splashbacks where its not really going to be touched very often except maybe when its cleaned it should be fine yeh??
how did the cost compare to glass? we have about 6sqm of splashbacks and at $450 sqm for glass its not really that cheap - im thinking of doing the cooktop section in glass then the rest in Akril if its suitable Re: Acrylic Splashback???? 4Dec 04, 2008 8:35 am We looked into Akril and although it was nice a few things put as off.
Limited choice of colours...a black line where the joins are and you can not use it behind gas cooktops although electric is fine.......it onlly comes incertain lengths........... I know they state it can be buffed out but how much does it cost per buff? Glass ended up being about $300 more. Only problem with going 1/2 glass, 1/2 akril is to get the colours to match correctly. We had a bit over 5sqm with 4 power points. Re: Acrylic Splashback???? 7Dec 04, 2008 11:10 am ed. nang3 was Akril really that easy to scratch? IMO stainless behind the cooktop + akril everywhere else would be a better option. I don't recall akril stating a custom paint colour. Re: Acrylic Splashback???? 9Dec 04, 2008 3:56 pm i suggest looking at www.zenolite.com.au. this is part of egr that make the acrylic bits that go on cars like headlight protectors. they can match the colour that you want. Maleena Hardy Curiouser & Curiouser Vintage-Handmade-Interior & Colour Consultancy http://www.curiouserandcuriouser.com.au Re: Acrylic Splashback???? 10Dec 15, 2008 12:33 pm We put in zenolite, I helped hubby cabinet maker do it. Worked out really cheap for us - trade price, and looks great, no-one can tell it's not glass. We have it behind the electric hot plate - which I don't think you are supposed to do, but haven't had any dramas yet. Re: Acrylic Splashback???? 11Dec 20, 2008 12:54 pm zenolite is made in queensland and is awesome stuff
we have these in our showroom as an alternative to glass, people cant tell the difference! Glass has a painted back whereas the zenolite has a fused colour layer which wont chip Zenolite is 25 times stronger in impact resistance tests Zenolite cuts like mdf board and is very easy to finish with 600-800wet/dry on the edge and a buffer for the face. We cnc this stuff to fit perfectly for customers where power points, tap knobs, window etc. are needed Yes it does scratch- this being its only con but it can be repaired like a cd, rub in the cream, wait, buff away:) Kitchens are like finger prints, no two are ever the same!! Great hassle free service. I think when I 'upgrade' to a house I'd do the bathroom walls in acrylic. Re: Acrylic Splashback???? 14Aug 18, 2017 5:35 pm we had the opposite experience with zenolite and akril. Zenolite was really flimsy and we weren't pleased with the colours. We ended up installing akril,a few years ago now, and it's been great! No scratches at all and super easy to install. Actually thinking of using it in our pending bathroom reno Re: Acrylic Splashback???? 15Aug 23, 2017 6:58 am Use glass, do it once and do it right.
