I would love to have a double 600mm wall oven (well a 900mm actually but they are hard to find and incredibly expensive), but I know the current fashion is to have the oven underneath the cooktop... So let's hear your pros and cons - a 600mm double wall oven, or a 900mm integrated cooktop with oven underneath? Initial thoughts are more bench space with a under oven, but wall oven is easier to access... Paul After 2 false starts, a year living overseas, two more world trips and 3 years of uncertainty we are now starting the build process again - hopefully for real this time! Re: Ovens - Wall or Under Cooktop? 2Nov 25, 2008 6:37 am I hate having to bend/squat down to use under bench ovens, but always had a problem with wall ovens because I'm short - In our first house, I was forever burning my arms on the open door, reaching over it on tippy-toes to take things out.
I also hate combined griller/ovens - we often used both at the same time. And the less splatter in my oven, the better..... So when we renovated the kitchen, I found a solution - an upside down oven, wall-mounted, The griller was at the top, and I set it at about shoulder level. That put the oven lower, but still above floor level (we had room for a pot drawer underneath). It worked beutifully for us. I'm not sure if those are even available any more, but I've seen double ovens like this one: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ The new place we're building has a 900mm free standing range - we really like it, but we're back to: a) bending down; and b) no separate griller. Oh well.... Re: Ovens - Wall or Under Cooktop? 3Nov 25, 2008 7:31 am Hi
I don't like an under bench oven for 2 reasons Main reason is small kids and safety - My kids were smaller they would play around the kitchen on the floor and walk around holding cupboard handles etc. Just did not like the idea of them touching an oven even if outside is insulated.....Mine are older but have family who have kids so rather not have an under bench oven so we have gone for a double oven. Also agree with Kek - Do not like the idea of squat and taking things out We have gone for a double wall oven Smeg SD010 capacity is similar to under bench but has it as 2 ovens. Regards beegee Re: Ovens - Wall or Under Cooktop? 5Nov 25, 2008 8:31 am I prefer under bench. I don't mind the wall ones, but they remind me of my of auntie's house, had them when they were popular in the 80s... plus if you put in another wall would you lose potential bench space?
You can also get freestanding ones muzzman, but position wise the oven would be the same as an under bench one. Re: Ovens - Wall or Under Cooktop? 6Nov 25, 2008 9:21 am Personal preference really.
I prefer a wall one but have no space for a wall so under the cooktop it is. Much easier to take out a nice big turkey from a wall oven than having to squat down and stand back up holding it.... maybe I'm just a weakling Re: Ovens - Wall or Under Cooktop? 7Nov 25, 2008 9:54 am regarding under cabinet oven and safety for kids, i installed the bosch cool touch door and have been really happy with it - have a 2 yr old. enabled me to have more bench space which i've been grateful for.
Anita Re: Ovens - Wall or Under Cooktop? 8Nov 25, 2008 9:59 am We will have an underbench oven with telescopic rails...
Easier to quickly baste and turn things without fully removing the item. And that is easier at a lower height I think. I like both looks, and I think to a certain extent, the style, layout and size of the kitchen determine which look is best. For example if bench space is limited, underbench is best. If the kitchen is sleek with a wall for many built in appliances, wall would be great. Jo I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Ovens - Wall or Under Cooktop? 10Nov 25, 2008 10:09 am donuts telescopic rails? Huh? The rails slide out so that you can slide the shelf all the way out and it will hold the weight of whatever you have on it..... the shelf won't tip. Terrence Malick Re: Ovens - Wall or Under Cooktop? 11Nov 25, 2008 10:15 am they are pretty good. i don't have them but would get them next kitchen - mine have a bump at front and back to stop the rail but they are a hastle to lift the shelf over when you have something in oven you don't want to bump or is quite heavy. Re: Ovens - Wall or Under Cooktop? 12Nov 25, 2008 10:47 am joles donuts telescopic rails? Huh? The rails slide out so that you can slide the shelf all the way out and it will hold the weight of whatever you have on it..... the shelf won't tip. Neff does a version. I have also seen some oven with hinges on the side so don't have to reach over the door. Re: Ovens - Wall or Under Cooktop? 13Nov 25, 2008 10:55 am I'm quite short and have opted for 2x600 ovens underbench. My AEG's will also have telescopic rails.
My mum has a wall oven, and I can't tell you how many times I've spilt or dropped something getting it out of the oven. It is way to high for me!!! I'd much rather bend and balance and lift up then lift down... Also lots of practice from bending and picking up 3 kids over the past 9 years!!! Re: Ovens - Wall or Under Cooktop? 14Nov 25, 2008 6:53 pm Wall ovens look good as long as they're nested in timber cabinetry, not a brick wall. We put ours in between twin pantries, with a pot drawer underneath and a microwave cupboard above. They also look great if you have two 60cm ovens side by side
Re: Ovens - Wall or Under Cooktop? 16Nov 26, 2008 12:56 am Thanks all - you've given me much to think about
(Nice kitchen too Amilelka ) What I would love to do is have the double wall oven on one side of the kitchen, and then an integrated coffee machine and microwave on the other side... or maybe I might do a 900mm freestanding oven/cooktop with secondary oven on the wall with the microwave and coffee machine (if there's room) But as you say it depends on the style/layout of the kitchen and seeing as I haven't really picked a house yet this will probably change (But I love cooking and you can never start planning too early hey, especially when window shopping for appliances ) After 2 false starts, a year living overseas, two more world trips and 3 years of uncertainty we are now starting the build process again - hopefully for real this time! Thanks for the insights, that makes perfect sense, and yeah, I will be leaning on the experience of the excavator operator entirely. 6 16147 Yeah my reasoning is just that those house posts are designed for vertical load not lateral. I just didnt want to risk interfering with the existing house… 4 11540 My daughter and son in law are about to start building, they are having a 600mm induction cook top and 900mm oven.
