I think the main point is that usable space is more functional when it is contiguous/connected rather than itsy bitsy with lots of wasted bits around the edges.

Re: Island Benches - sink or not to sink? 22Nov 24, 2008 7:10 pm I like the sink to look onto the living area as well, and it will also look out to my view. It will be on the end of the bench nearest the pantry and fridge, and I will probably do most of the preparation on the island as well. I don't stand over stoves for long times so that is on the back wall facing my gorgeous sparkly chocolate brown splashback. I have my sink facing the same way at the moment and it has worked well. I am having one big sink and just a little quarter size both undermount and I plan on filling it with ice and champagne bottles for the girls who will be perched up the other end feeding their faces and gasbagging non stop.
Kyton, I am so jealous of your 4m bench how good will that be. Sorry, didn't explain it properly. The main bench is continuous, with no sink interupting it, as when I cook, I like to spread out, so it would be good for me. And all dirty dishes/etc would go on the island bench. Does that make sense? I like the different between the dishes area and the cooking area. Re: Island Benches - sink or not to sink? 24Nov 25, 2008 3:57 pm I had an island with a sink in it when I built last and I actually didn't mind it as it was off centre for more room to prepare food.
