Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Nov 19, 2008 3:26 pm I recently bought a unit. There are tenants in there until mid next year, but I've started thinking of some renovations i would like to do when i move in.
There is something about the kitchen that doesn't look quite right. I think maybe the tile splash backs look out of place (too dark?). I don't have a lot of money to spend so say i have a budget of $1000. (Maximum $2000) I've only got pictures from the net when it was up on realestate.com. (excuse the furniture, as i said there are tenants in there who don't share my taste ) Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ I would love some ideas on what i could do to make it a bit nicer. I am personally fond of the modern/contemporary style. I am thinking a new tile splash back or even coloured glass. Down lights and new stove top/range hood. Lend me your creativity! Re: Kitchen Renovation Ideas Please! 2Nov 19, 2008 4:02 pm I know what you mean about it looking a bit strange - my first thought is that the timber doors and benchtops look to be made of the same material - no contrast.
Would be a shame to have to bin it though - that looks like solid timber; is it? One thing I would be thinking about is some wall units or shelving either side of the range hood if you want to put in a canopy or all the way across if you go for a built in model - that will help provide some balance between the very dense looking cabinets/tops and the very empty looking wall(s). I don't know if $2K will get you there if you are looking at a new cooktop, tiles and wall units as well, but I agree about the tile colour not doing it. Glass splashbacks will probably be out of reach on that budget but it is worth getting a quote or two - it certainly looks great. Getting those taps out of the wall and mounted on the sink will also help make that layout look a bit more up to date. Cheers, Earl Re: Kitchen Renovation Ideas Please! 3Nov 19, 2008 4:11 pm I think the timber and dark splashback, together with the white walls and no overhead cupboards make the kitchen look 'bottom-heavy' as it were. Perhaps painting the white walls a different colour would help (and be cheap)?
Maybe someone could suggest a colour and it could be photoshopped in to see if that helps? (I've only been to the place once for an inspection) I have the same opinion though, it would be a shame to bin it all because i think it has potential. I was thinking of overhead cupboards too but then i thought it would be hard to match them to the existing ones. I saw this picture on trends and thought the cupboards were not dissimilar Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Maybe i could just change the benchtops and spashback and update the fittings. I'd just like it to look modern! archaeobabe I think the timber and dark splashback, together with the white walls and no overhead cupboards make the kitchen look 'bottom-heavy' as it were. I was going to re paint the whole house actually. I hadn't picked a colour yet but something fairly neutral but with a bit of depth. Re: Kitchen Renovation Ideas Please! 7Nov 20, 2008 8:15 am Not sure if glass splash back all round would fit in the budget but you could get just the area behind the cooktop done and paint the rest of the wall a light brown like in the later photo you posted.
If it's a laminate then you most likely could match the overhead cupboards with frost glass doors. I reckon changing the handles to square ones 'should' be on the list. Not sure how much it would be to re-locate the taps as you'd need to pull the kitchen out for them to open up the wall I'd think. Re: Kitchen Renovation Ideas Please! 8Nov 20, 2008 9:56 am ed. If i was going to get the splashback done it would be all around the kitchen, i think it might look a bit cheap to paint part of it. I hadn't thought about the handles actually. Something bolder might look a bit better. Thanks I suppose i was mostly looking for suggestions on colour. I am not sure what would work on the benchtop and splashbacks. Apart from the pervious photo i posted i am struggling to come up with ideas. Even what colour tiles to put on the floors! Re: Kitchen Renovation Ideas Please! 9Nov 20, 2008 10:09 am It's hard to plan ahead when you don't have access. I've been in the same situation as you
Splashback, allow for $400-$450/m2 installed and that is for float glass. The one with a green tinge. Could always go granite transformation on the benchtop and tile the splashback. I think that would prove to be a significant change. Creamy benchtop + white tiles + overhead cupboards maybe? Re: Kitchen Renovation Ideas Please! 10Nov 20, 2008 10:21 am I think a new splashback would look fantastic. If the budget can't stretch to glass then some light coloured tiles will look just as nice for a fraction of the cost It's a lovely kitchen otherwise. Re: Kitchen Renovation Ideas Please! 11Nov 20, 2008 6:15 pm Your cheapest option for the moment is to replace the tiles. I would go with a basic gloss white tile, and not that high up the wall. That’s a very high splash back. 2 rows should do it. Those cupboards are just lovely, beautiful timber. I just had tiles replaced in a kitchen for a client, basic gloss white tile, the cost for tiles, grout and labour….$484.00, nearly the same size kitchen as yours. Later you could look at doing some overheads and a fan built in, in a nice glass. All and all, that’s not a bad kitchen. I agree with others about the wall tiles, making them white would really make the bench look great! Also, I do think that the timber floor, timber doors and timber bench top are a bit too much... What about just changing the doors and draw fronts?? (maybe white??) Then there would be a break between the timber floor and timber bench.. Re: Kitchen Renovation Ideas Please! 13Nov 20, 2008 8:26 pm Thanks for the comments everyone.
I think i would rather extend my budget to do a proper job rather then the cheaper option that will just need updating again sooner then later. There is definitely too much timber going on in there I'd like to salvage something in it though. Either keep the benchtop or doors, but not both. (Which part do you think i should keep?) To be honest i like the idea of the glass splashback most of all. I think a new benchtop or doors, new spashback and updated fixtures would make it look a million bucks! Re: Kitchen Renovation Ideas Please! 15Nov 21, 2008 9:05 am I say keep the cupboards.
Personally I'd also consider keeping the benchtop or at least make it a lower priority. I think you're going to get the best bang for you buck with a new splashback, either tiles or glass, and a flute thingymebob. Re: Kitchen Renovation Ideas Please! 16Nov 21, 2008 9:49 am Also, I think the tiles going right hte way around might be making it look dated.
I think maybe just a splashback along the one wall and then a 10cm splashback along the other wall behind the sink. Re: Kitchen Renovation Ideas Please! 17Nov 21, 2008 10:45 am ed. Could also change kickpanels if you want the doors seperated from the timber flooring. Well i am planning on putting tiles in the kitchen so that will remove that bit of wood Suggestions for tile colours would be appreciated! Rachelle I say keep the cupboards. I think you're going to get the best bang for you buck with a new splashback, either tiles or glass, and a flute thingymebob. I do like the benchtop better then the cupboards. I think you are right in saying changing the splashback in the key. My only concern is if i for now just change the splashback, how hard will it be to change the benchtops etc down the track if i wanted to? Perhaps i should just wait until i get into the place. It might grow on me once i am living there Re: Kitchen Renovation Ideas Please! 18Nov 21, 2008 11:41 am I personally wouldn't do anything until you move in. (A) Things always look different when you live with them day after day plus your personal effects will make a difference (B) Why change it now for the tenants to enjoy / possibly mark or damage? The tenants won't care less the way the kitchen looks, they are already used to the way it is. You can get stainless steel in sheets or tiles. Glass tiles look wonderful and come in so many colors. Yeah on a $1000 budget? How?
