Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Nov 18, 2008 10:04 am We are looking at getting some new overhead cupboards installed in our kitchen in the near future. The kitchen itself isn't that ols.
Are we better off getting a cabinet maker in to do this, or are the 'flat pack' type style from IKEA and Bunnings ok too (and are they easy to install)? Re: Installing new Overhead Kitchen Cupboards - best options 2Nov 18, 2008 11:15 am Ikea cabinets have thin backs, and can only be easily installed on solid (brick) walls
Most cabinetmakers now use solid backed cabinets, which can easily installed on most wall types (including studded walls) Best Price Wardrobes Sliding door robes | Walk in robes Deco panel | Mirror | Melamine 26 to 28 Cottage lane Hackham M: 0402 927 376 http://www.bestpricewardrobes.com.au Trade welcome Re: Installing new Overhead Kitchen Cupboards - best options 4Nov 24, 2008 1:43 pm Quick update. for those interested. Checked out Bunnings Flatpax for overhead cupboards and they are not as cheap as I thought (but still helova lot cheaper than a cabinet maker)..
For a 900mm long cupboard it's $109, then add an end panel for $31 and 2 doors at $43 each - so looking at around the $200 mark just for a cabinet. Anyone have any idea what a similar cabinet would cost to have made? The bonus of these Flatpax is that they are easy to assemble/install, and they match perfectly in size and colour to my existing kitchen (obviously a flat pack was used by the last owner to build our kitchen) I don't mind the look and it's basically exactly what we want... Re: Installing new Overhead Kitchen Cupboards - best options 5Nov 24, 2008 2:53 pm not that i know what a single unit would cost to get made, but from the quotes i was getting on cabinets and doors/drawer fronts from cabinet makers compared to what i quoted up with Bunnings flatpax and the Laminex Group Readikits which i ended up choosing, i would say they are about 1/3-1/4 the cost..
i spent about $4400--4800 on all my cabinets and drawers etc and the quotes i was getting from kitchen shops etc were all around the $12-18k mark. Actually, i love my kitchen. I've been extremely happy with it.
i had a look at the bunnings ones and they weren't anywhere near the quality of ikea - especially the drawers. Having said that, if laminex do a flat pack, i would definately check that out because i love some of their designs in catalogues etc. they may have a more interesting range. but i can't speak to their quality but just re-read your post and seems like the bunnings ones are a good match with existing cabinets - that would be a big plus +++ and the wall cabinets are probably fine. i didn't like their drawers mainly. Anita I used the Laminex ones and they are great quality, easily as good if not better than the ones from the local kitchen reno place that did my mums kitchen a few years back. Thing i liked was that you can upgrade the drawers to Hettich Innotech steel drawers with quadra runners/soft close etc and the drawers come pre-assembled.. nice and easy !! Re: Installing new Overhead Kitchen Cupboards - best options 9Nov 25, 2008 1:16 pm they're some good prices there Kevin, cheaper than what i'd thought actually from a cabinetmaker!!!
would you be interested in quoting on a corner unit i need made up - although freight to WA might be a killer but worth looking at anyway.. I will PM it to you anyway Re: Installing new Overhead Kitchen Cupboards - best options 10Nov 25, 2008 6:00 pm Kevin Brown McReidy Quick update. for those interested. TIA 0 16609 Bigger the better for storage for me IMO. But I guess it's harder to tell the cost/benefit in your example - mainly the 'cost'?
