am planning to do a facelift on my 9 year old kitchen. It's a U-shaped kitchen with the stove and oven on the left side, which also has upper cabinets The mid section has a window behind it, with the sink and dishwasher. The right side has tall cabinets including pantry. Plan to install an island as well with the same QQ benchtop and possibly sides as well. Flooring will be Sydney Blue Gum floating timber. For benchtops am hoping to go with Quantum Quartz in Turino (white top with bits of slightly darker material through it). I was thinking of using laminex polar white on the door fronts on the left and right cabinets, but use darker front on the centre row of cabinets. Something quite dark like Burnished Wood laminex. Maybe the island front would also have a dark laminex. How does this sound? Or should I go for all white fronts, which I felt might be a bit too white... Please let me know your thoughts/advice thanks all S Re: seeking colour advice on kitchen doors.. 3Oct 22, 2008 10:04 am Just quickly, I’m supposed to be working…………ha!
What’s wrong with what’s there? Looks good to me possibly the timber on the front of the bench. But it looks new to me. Those pictures are of a kitchen my fiancee built - the sheets on top are cut-outs for the stonemason for the bench I posted them as they are similiar to what the OP was looking for Re: photo of my current kitchen 7Oct 22, 2008 11:03 am satz my dishwasher really is that shape! or perhaps it was just poor merging in Photoshop You've got plenty of room to work with! Is the rest of your house modernised (or planning too)? that would be a big factor i whether i would go something like above Re: seeking colour advice on kitchen doors.. 9Oct 22, 2008 11:32 am Paula Michelle Just quickly, I’m supposed to be working…………ha! thanks for the reply Did you mean the complete right hand side or just the cupboards at the top, or just the 2 tall pantry doors? (incidentally, my plan is to merge the 2 pantry doors with the 2 small ones above them) thanks again Satz Re: seeking colour advice on kitchen doors.. 11Oct 22, 2008 12:22 pm Satz,
What are you planning to do with that open shelf/niche to the right of the window? Since it sits on top of your benchtop there are going to be some issues with removing the old top and fitting a new one with those boards there. Engineered stone tops are usually 20mm or 30mm thick with buildups in multiples of those figures, while those existing laminated tops look to be standard 34mm thick postformed. Just a thought without knowing more about your project. Cheers, Earl Re: seeking colour advice on kitchen doors.. 12Oct 22, 2008 12:28 pm hi earl
the T piece in the open shelf is just resting on the bench and the shelf is adjustable so I should be able to compensate for the 30mm benchtop I plan to put in. You're right, the current top is approx 34mm... cheers and thanks S Re: seeking colour advice on kitchen doors.. 13Oct 22, 2008 1:58 pm satz hi paula thanks for the reply Did you mean the complete right hand side or just the cupboards at the top, or just the 2 tall pantry doors? Just having another look at your existing kitchen... Looks at the moment to be an off-white/antique white/cream beige sort of colour? Bear in mind that all of those boards that are currently edge on to the front of the kitchen will possibly need to be replaced to match whichever colours you change to - these appear to be the end panels either side of your pantry (looks like there are tiles on one of these end panels?), the two gables of the open unit (as well as the top of the cavity), the end panels either side of the dishwasher and the in fill boards between the wall units and the wall as well as the floor unit on the left next to the oven and the wall. The end panels on the dishwasher cavity will be easy, but replacing the in fills and the pantry end panels could be a bit harder, as well as the gables in the open cavity. Any of those boards that are between two cabinets or between a cabinet and a wall may mean having to remove the cabinet to replace them. Since you are also changing the benchtop it won't be that hard to remove the cabinets or undo all of the screws holding these boards in place to slide them out and replace them with new ones but it will be quite a big job. I'm not saying that you shouldn't go this path but am just making sure that you are aware of all the issues at the planning stage; as it is not just a case of replacing the door and drawer fronts. once again, thanks for the good advice. Do you know if there is some kind of 'edge' tape that I could get to match whichever laminex colour I go with? or at least close? Also, would you know if brushed alumumium/stainless is available as a stick-on to put on the kickboards? cheers Satz Re: seeking colour advice on kitchen doors.. 16Oct 23, 2008 7:08 am Hi Satz,
All coloured boards have a matching edge tape with many available in a number of thicknesses normally .4mm, 1mm and 2mm. This tape is used by the cabinetmakers to edge boards after they are cut and is normally applied by an edgebanding machine, but it can be done by hand. Many edge tapes can be supplied in pre glued or unglued depending on the requirements of the job and normally come in 25m or 50m rolls. Re-edging all of the boards might be possible, but you would probably need to remove the old edging first - you would have to check with your cabinetmaker or the supplier of the tape (I wouldn't be putting new edge tape over old edges, but that is just me). Sheets of laminate in brushed aluminum/stainless can be purchased, cut to size and glued to kickboards - the sheets are normally at least 2400mm x 1200mm. An easier process might be as you suggested to get some aluminium or SS sheet cut to size to be fixed to the existing laminate - any sheet metal shop and many cabinetmakers can do this job...you just have to find the one who will do it for the right price. I don't know about any "peel and stick" product, but using a good contact adhesive is pretty straight forward. I hope this helps, Cheers. my project is starting to sound scary! I'm thinking that if I go for brown/dark doors, you might even be able to see white around the edges of the doors when they're closed... thought it all sounded too easy perhaps I should just stick with white replacement doors! cheers Satz Re: seeking colour advice on kitchen doors.. 18Oct 25, 2008 8:56 am what about instead of a colour, use glass with aluminium edge on either side of rangehood and around the oven? then it doesnt matter about the carcass being white.
and you can use new white doors for the rest of it. the glass doors with alumium edge will stand out against the white and wont date as much as a colour.
