Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Oct 10, 2008 7:49 pm Just watched the end of Better Homes and Gardens and saw the "What's on Next Week". Apparently Tara is going to do some testing of different bench top surfaces - looked like stainless, laminates, stone etc - cutting, dropping heavy objects. staining etc. Will be one to remember to watch. Re: BENCHTOP TESTING ON BETTER HOMES AND GARDENS 3Oct 10, 2008 8:55 pm Yeah….wouldn’t it be bad if you have just put in the one that is the worst. Internal and External Building and Colour Consultant Online - Worldwide http://www.denovoconcepts.com Re: BENCHTOP TESTING ON BETTER HOMES AND GARDENS 4Oct 17, 2008 7:25 pm Well they did the testing on granite / stainless steel / manmade stone / acrylic / timber / laminate. Put a saucepan straight from the cooktop onto it, burnt it with a blow torch, scratched it with a knife plus a compound cream, left curry paste and red wine on for 10mins and finally dropped a large tin onto each one.
Pretty much they all fared well but the manmade seemed to come out the winner as it didn't stain, heat didn't affect it, the cut marks were not overtly noticeable and the jar left no impression. Re: BENCHTOP TESTING ON BETTER HOMES AND GARDENS 5Oct 17, 2008 7:30 pm Way to go kyton, thanks for the update!

Re: BENCHTOP TESTING ON BETTER HOMES AND GARDENS 7Oct 17, 2008 8:45 pm Hey Su,
That is what I was supposed to be doing this evening - throwing down some champagne birthday drinks with my two best friends from kindy - ooooh how scary to say that when you just turned 38 - but one had to bail. Oh well at least I got to waste time watching TV and googling all sorts of "must haves" for the new house. Kylie Re: BENCHTOP TESTING ON BETTER HOMES AND GARDENS 8Oct 17, 2008 8:48 pm Kindy!!!!!

I saw it - yes - they meant Caesarstone. zouk architects Be ware of choosing light colour man made top, especially the white range. They put red wine and curry paste on the c/stone and after leaving for 10 minutes and then wiping off - no stain left. There was a stain in the granite. After 4 years - we're in! How did Laminex fair? Re: BENCHTOP TESTING ON BETTER HOMES AND GARDENS 15Oct 18, 2008 7:36 am Laminex
Hot pot test - no impact Burn test with creme brulee blow torch - burnt & damaged benchtop Cutting test - definite cuts that can't be removed (but they mentioned that the benchtops are cheaper and you can replace them if it gets bad) Red wine/curry paste test - no left over stain After 4 years - we're in! Re: BENCHTOP TESTING ON BETTER HOMES AND GARDENS 16Oct 18, 2008 3:08 pm the white man made stones do stain a bit. Mum put caesar stone in a white and it gets a really light yellow to it from curry paste. Not too bad, like you really have to look to see it ( the one that did it will know it is there). On the white stone bench staining - easy solution would be to just spinkle some bicarb on top and it will remove the stain (works on food dye stains if you're making playdough on a laminate bench as well) After 4 years - we're in! But I guess it's harder to tell the cost/benefit in your example - mainly the 'cost'?
