Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Oct 08, 2008 9:36 pm Hi guys,
I always thought I would have a glass splashback on both sides of the window. I love Henna Red and are still having that colour for my bar area upstairs( cupboards) Then I began to look at my granite Bianco Romano and how it is used in kitchens in America. I noticed that almost all homeowners used stone mosaics or porcelan tiles for their splahbacks...I really like this look. My kitchen is a very modern design, gloss white cupboards, walnut feature wood and the granite. So, what do people think about not having glass but another different type of stone tile like the colours in the picture below...these are very period style kitchens so just look at the granite and splahbacks. What do you think? Can it work in a modern kitchen or is glass the way to go? Mrs B I really like the small tiles, I think it is marble. Just take away the wood and try to imagine a row of white cupboards going all the way across instead. Also, don’t forget about the grout to clean. That is one amazing benchtop a glass splashback would just blend smoothly with everything else Re: Plan B for a splash back...opinions invited 4Oct 08, 2008 10:24 pm Mrs B..... ummm yeah you've lost the plot.
As SuH said, let the granite take centre stage... I'd be going for a white splashback..... just so it's all about the granite. Jo I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Plan B for a splash back...opinions invited 5Oct 08, 2008 10:29 pm agreed skip mosaics and grout. you've got that beautiful stone. keep the splash back clean and simple. ( which doesn't mean it can't have a strong single colour.) Re: Plan B for a splash back...opinions invited 6Oct 08, 2008 10:37 pm joles Mrs B..... ummm yeah you've lost the plot. Jo Absolutely, white on Starfire you wouldn't need anything more Re: Plan B for a splash back...opinions invited 7Oct 09, 2008 6:11 am mmmm. I agree, you don't want to detract from the benchtop, and don't want it to look too busy.
I saw a kitchen on the weekend at the Ponds in syd with a glass splashback & it looked so clean and sleak I just had to take a photo...check it out. I don't think you would be disappointed with glass. Best of all it has white cupboards to give you a good comparison! Re: Plan B for a splash back...opinions invited 8Oct 09, 2008 6:20 am I think starfire glass over your wall colour will let the benchtop do the talking. Unless you can get more granite and do the spalshback in that, that woudl be amazing too. Re: Plan B for a splash back...opinions invited 9Oct 09, 2008 6:41 am Hi Mrs B., my opinion is, you have an ultra-modern house from the look of your exterior, don't look at American kitchens, it's not the same style, look at top end Italian and German kitchens, that's where you want to go. Unless you want your kitchen to be a different style of course.
I can't recall colours from your kitchen, but what about bringing granite up to be your splashback as well, if you think glass is too plain? Re: Plan B for a splash back...opinions invited 11Oct 09, 2008 8:23 am Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅
I know this pic is very busy but here is a good pic for the granite splashback Mrs B I have seen the granite used as a splashback and it does look stunning. Because you never see your benchtops on the angle that you would see a splashback it gives off a whiole new look to the granite. Especially being accentuated by the white cupboards, I think this would be a better option than the mosaics. I think this or glass. Remember glass is sleek and seemless also which I think your house sounds like its going to be. Re: Plan B for a splash back...opinions invited 12Oct 09, 2008 8:46 am Wondered what would be said in this thread.
Have to agree Mrs B, I thought it about it last night, your home is too modern to go backwards with an old look. As much as it reinvents itself every few years, I really don’t see it ever coming back STRONG! I agree with Dan, way too much grout, it will detract from the look of everything else in your kitchen and can be very busy! Now…..there must be some landscaping you can move onto to keep your mind off changing things in your home! Also knowing how much you love colour, I really don't think you'd regret using Henna Red in your kitchen. I don't think it would take away from your beautiful granite, it would enhance it IMO. Re: Plan B for a splash back...opinions invited 16Oct 09, 2008 3:05 pm Hi Mrs B, sorry, another glass fan here! Too much mixing patterns with the mosaics, I think? though it'd be good to see it in a pic against crisp white cabinetry like ur having - the cupboards in those pics are also very busy.
I am still a big fan of the carrying the splashback colour up the wall as per your previous idea, and as you know I wish we had done that iN our kitchen now! Re: Plan B for a splash back...opinions invited 17Oct 09, 2008 5:27 pm Michelle Now…..there must be some landscaping you can move onto to keep your mind off changing things in your home! Actually, I do have some other very exciting projects to keep my mind off this kitchen Sometimes, I just think too much...I really need to move on, don't I. ...and as for landscaping Mrs B Re: Plan B for a splash back...opinions invited 18Oct 09, 2008 5:32 pm Ok….get on with the other one then!! Internal and External Building and Colour Consultant Online - Worldwide http://www.denovoconcepts.com Re: Plan B for a splash back...opinions invited 19Oct 09, 2008 5:50 pm Thankyou everybody who has responded to this thread. It is so refreshing to get honest opinions and not just what I want to hear sometimes. I have been searching for hours on the internet for modern kitchens with this granite...I just like to get ideas how it is finished off.
I take it that most responses have centered around the stone should be the feature not the backsplash. This is a really good point I think and will take it on board. I love glass more than anything and the builder has allowed for it. What I was trying to achieve was a soft white background that has a bit of texture to it but as you have said, grout is definately not a feature but a pain to clean. A few suggested to take the granite up to the overhead cupboards...I did this in my last house and the kitchen was just stunning. I dont know about this house though...will think about it JoK...your kitchen is just so special and your red splashback inspired my henna red colour (we are having the cupboards upstairs this colour) But something tells me it really is a feature by itself so I dont know if it will work with the granite that suppose to be the feature as well. I have decided that I cannot make a decision until the kitchen is in...I think I will know straight away what to do. Don't worry I have so many other house projects to think about and agonise over. Once again, thankyou to everybody who took the time to reply, it really does help. Mrs B Re: Plan B for a splash back...opinions invited 20Oct 09, 2008 5:56 pm You can get patterned glass splashbacks too Mrs B. The glass has a ripple effect in it, I could imagine that in white.
