Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Oct 06, 2008 8:59 pm Our stone mason came onsite today to take away my templates to make my stone benches. I asked him if it was possible to make the island bench wider - we currently have 200mm overhang; I would like a bit more to sit comfortably under on bar stools.
He said he would if he could (depends on how he can cut the slab) - but pointed out it would ruin the line of the kitchen - currently the line of the end of the bench sits neat with the end of the bench on the wall next to it - this floorplan illustrates better - I have put a red line to show how the benches line up nicely atm: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Do you think it would matter if the island bench extends another 50mm out? And make the line not even? Re: Should I make island bench wider? 2Oct 06, 2008 9:09 pm I think it really depends on whether or not it would bother YOU personally! If you're not fussed about "perfect symmetry", or "perfect alignment", then it's always great to have more bench space!!!! But if you are going to continually look at it once you're living there, and think "it doesn't line up!!! " , then I probably wouldn't do it! Don't know that I've been much help...sorry! Re: Should I make island bench wider? 8Oct 06, 2008 11:08 pm What's the gap between the island and the bench behind. It can be reduced to 1100 mm without making it too tight. You may be able to have your deeper overhang and alignment. A wider stone top might only be possible if it has some extra support under neath. I recall a previous thread mentioning this. Newbies - I know I'm weird I think the 5cm won't make a difference to the look of it, but I think it will make a difference to fitting my legs in underneath! I hate it when I'm sitting at a table and can't fit in properly so I think it would bug me if I didn't extend it if I could. Kevin Brown - this is only making it 250mm instead of 200mm - so I'm hoping the support should be ok ? (think the other thread was referring more to 300mm overhangs?) Also we are having the waterfall edges - does this help with supporting the overhang? thanks all Re: Should I make island bench wider? 14Oct 07, 2008 11:10 am donuts Newbies - I know I'm weird I think the 5cm won't make a difference to the look of it, but I think it will make a difference to fitting my legs in underneath!
