Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Oct 31, 2020 5:47 am Hi everyone, Just after peoples experience - have searched the forum and found a bit. We are going to have a 60mm island in a cat 1 stone. It is 3100 long and 900 deep. There is one waterfall and the overhang is 300 across the back and one side. We want the overhangs finished underneath so it will be a 60mm mitre edge top and bottom We have 20mm stone included but just wondering what sort of extra cost this will involve. Am planning to get some quotes from local stonemasons but cant do till monday so thought would throw to the forum and see what your costs were like. Wondering if should chuck the idea : ) Thanks Re: 60mm Stone Feedback 2Nov 02, 2020 6:24 pm It will screw with your bench height, or cabinet/kick height. If you are all tall another 50mm of bench height is a backsaver, but if you're not then the extra height might be an issue. Usually when stone is quoted you pay for one or more whole sheets, the number of cuts/mitres, cutouts and joins. The cost of additional items is lower if it can be cut from your "leftovers" Re: 60mm Stone Feedback 3Nov 02, 2020 6:38 pm The cabinetry has been accounted for to accommodate the thicker bench so our height overall will be unchanged - so thats okay but thank you for pointing that out - could help others. Was wanting to get an idea what people paid to upgrade as I think we are paying for it to be plated in gold.... Waiting on some quotes back will see how we go - will also consider removing island stone and doing after handover if quotes are more than 1.5K different - 1,5K is nothing to throw away : Re: 60mm Stone Feedback 4Nov 02, 2020 7:12 pm You know that 60 mm will be only for the edges, right? (so not much of the practical value) With minimalist style trending, I would be thinking twice for going over 20 mm, unless you are bringing in tons of other "heavy" luxury to your house (eg marble all over, etc.) and just support the general style with your benchtops. Re: 60mm Stone Feedback 5Nov 02, 2020 7:16 pm Thanks for the input - Yes I know its only the an edge look but we have quite a big kitchen - and its all 20mm just the island is 60mm - I prefer the thicker stone for our kitchen - I do love super thin islands eg porcelain or the 13mm stone but that wasn't available to us. Re: 60mm Stone Feedback 6Nov 03, 2020 4:28 pm Builder and quotes all match up - worth getting quotes and there is a lot of helpful info on the internet - like homeone !
