Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Aug 31, 2020 2:05 pm Hi, I'm looking for some advice on how to fit the 3 rear panels to my kitchen island so that the joins will be either hidden or tidied so they are a kind of feature (see example photo). The inside edges have been cut so they'll need to be covered up maybe with some iron-on edging? although I'm reluctant to use this as the finish is generally pretty average. The rest of the kitchen is quite minimal so I don't want to fit any extra vertical lengths over the joins, and also want to avoid using any plastic joining strips. Am I wasting my time, should I just try find some pre-made panels to cover (total with is 2440mm), or is there an easy way to use the materials I already have? To do this you need to have them edged with ABS edging. I'm guessing that this is a flatpack hence the reason you haven't got a cabinet maker providing you with finished panels that fit. If you take the panels and exact measurements to a local cabinet maker they may cut and edge them for you. Realistically it's only a 5 minute job plus a couple of metres of edging. Many won't want to do it but I'm sure if you do a quick google of near by cabbies and give them a call someone will do it. Another question, any reason the gap under the kickboard at the back is so big? Another question, any reason the gap under the kickboard at the back is so big? Yes, door gap kind of look is what I had in mind almost to match the door gaps of the top cabinets behind. I've tried some basic edging tape (from Bunnings) and it doesn't look great. Probably my technique, but as you suggest a cabinet maker would be the way to go for a clean finish. I was just hoping someone might have had a quick fix. I since found out that 'dress panels' are what I'm after if replacing them entirely. I didn't know that's what they were called. Custom cut and edged to any size. As for the gap, I was just testing heights. There's only a very short benchtop overhang and that height matches the opposite side (around 75mm). I'm just wanting to avoid the island looking like a big box and the gap gives some toe space if someone's standing there. Re: How to hide joins on rear panels of kitchen island? 4Aug 31, 2020 6:50 pm They are just back panels the same as you have side panels. Is this a flat pack? You are just over sheet size to do it in one sheet unless it happens to be available in oversized sheets. Normally we build kitchens with multiple pieces on the back because it's more economical, simpler to transport and fix. All the panels are edged 3 sides (bottom and 2 sides). It wasn't the kicker or toe space I was asking it's the gap below the kickboard. It looks like a 5mm gap between the floor and the kickboard. It's an Ikea kitchen with a few variations, so yes, flatpack (limited budget). The panels I have were left overs from something else, including the sides that by fit by size but I guess won't work because of the cuts. It's looking more like I'll just need to fork out for the right size pieces. I'd just loose fit all the panels and the kickboard so the gap is bigger than it really is, it just needs to slide down. In that situation the glass doesn't really need to be glued down. You can just use the small little clear cabinet door bumpers and lay the glass on top.
