Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Aug 27, 2020 8:16 pm Need to replace a missing kitchen wall tile – I only need one tile! Tile is a very bog-standard glossy white 150mm x 150mm ceramic tile – would have been used in the tens of millions over the years. These particular tiles are in a 40-year-old kitchen in perfect condition except for this one tile. Are there any places in Melbourne where you can match and buy just one tile like this? The second thing is, I would need to do a straight cut on the tile as one dimension is 140mm where this tile finishes on the corner of the wall. Without having a tile cutter is there any other reliable way to make a decent straight-cut? Even if they come from the same factory, different batches may be slightly different colours as ceramic is a natural material and has variations. Your best bet is to scour secondhand building material places near you, as it is possible that houses in your area may have used the same tile. You might also ask around your neighbours, especially the older one. You never know what you might find they have squirrelled away in the back of their sheds and under their houses. A good way to get to know them and payment could be as cheap as a cake and tea, or a beer or two.
With regards to cutting, you can buy a hand tile cutter quite cheaply - you never know when it will come in handy again, especially if you can’t find a match and end up having to replace that top row of tiles. However, you could also score the glazed surface with something harder than the glaze, and then very carefully nibble away at that edge with a pair of pliers. Alternatively, an angle grinder with a masonry cutting or grinding wheel will work. If the cut edge tucks in under that timber beading at the back of the photo, it won't matter too much if the cut is a bit rough. Re: Need a Single White Kitchen Wall Tile - Where Do I Buy? 3Aug 28, 2020 3:27 pm Thanks so much - good advice re tile cutting that I'll certainly follow-up on. Living in metro Melbourne with "lockdown", non-food shops are closed - only open for online orders. Okay, luckily I found exactly what I needed (6-inch glossy white ceramic) at $2 per tile (loose tile purchases); bought 2 off tiles as there is one other cracked tile I need to replace. Postage from NSW to VIC for $9 – so $13 all up straight to my door. Company is a small family business called MDC Mosaics in NSW. Just noticed they have 50 Google Reviews and rating of 4.9/5.0. Getting it posted beats the 5km radius limit currently in Victoria (which I of course fully respect). Thanks for the advice - much appreciated.
