Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 May 30, 2009 11:21 am Anyone got any pics of their walk-in pantry shelving configuration with good tips on what to include and perhaps things that you haven't found useful in hindsight? My space is 2metres in length by about 1.3 metres wide. Any clever ideas about the best way to use the limited area I have. My door is on the 1.3m side
I like the ideas in the pictures attached. Any clever suggestions? Re: Walk-In Pantry shelving 4May 30, 2009 11:39 am Not a prob at all. Some people will post the same query in a number of places and it can make it hard to see what responses you have. Especially something like this which people will be interested in. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: Walk-In Pantry shelving 5May 30, 2009 9:49 pm I have a small pantry and making the most of all the space available took some tweaking. The thing I really like that I did was placing containers up the very top. Each one contains rarely used items. One has my cake decorating tubes etc it it. Another has food colouring and cake consumables in it and yet another has cookie cutters etc in it. They are lightweight, so easy to pull down and are mostly out of the way. To make it 'look' groovy. I could have used cane baskets or made some other set of containers look a bit stylish but to date, I just used the big tupperware stuff I use about once a year. I also have a designated spot for cookbooks. I'd like to put an extra divider in the pantry to stop them falling over but I keep adding to my collection. (Think "The Silver Spoon" big chunky volume that it is.) Good luck and I look forward to hearing suggestions. Re: Walk-In Pantry shelving 6May 30, 2009 11:35 pm Okay that's two good ideas thanks Paddy05 1. Infrequently used items; top shelf 2. Designated area for recipe books Did not think of putting recipe books in Pantry, was thinking of having them in kitchen cupboards somewhere; keep the ideas rolling in...... Re: Walk-In Pantry shelving 7May 31, 2009 9:43 am Great thread ! however I have no ideas as I am stuck also are you putting a sink in yours ?? Ohh ! and I like the idea of being able to put wine bottles - like top photo. * Are we there yet ? Demolition has come and gone ! yippeeee..hang on that was months ago !! come on Mr Builder, dig a hole at least Finaly ! Hole Dug ! well done darren 20/06/2010. Slab is down ! Framing is complete 20/10/2010 we are progressing like a snail on heat - excited and determined but very very slow Steveo Re: Walk-In Pantry shelving 8May 31, 2009 9:56 am I think the first question is: How will I use the pantry? From there then a whole stream of questions flow. I've thought about this a lot. Is it purely storage? What type of storage? All food... will my fridge go in there? Will I need an extra freezer to go in there? Wine fridge? Will I store light sensitive items in there... therefor do I need cupboard fronts if there is a window? Will I store large heavy items? Slabs, bulk buy oil, etc there for do I need some floor space under the bench for big heavy bulky items? Do I buy large boxes of cereal, etc? Do I need some higher shelving configurations to accommodate larger boxes? Is it a prep and storage area? If it is a prep area... what type of prep? Do I need bench space for appliances? (toaster, kettle, rice maker, toasted sandwich maker) Will those appliances stay on the bench or do I need to make sure I have shelving space for them? If it will be prep.... do I need a sink? Do I need to keep any utensils in there? Do I need a bank of drawers? If I'm having a sink/doing prep... do I need some sort of splashback around the bench? If I'm going to use appliances.... how many powerpoints do I need? Do I need an exhaust fan? I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Walk-In Pantry shelving 9May 31, 2009 1:25 pm I am "stealing" my pantry from my laundry. The laundry is a galley laundry running alongside the bathroom and there is a skylight and vaulted ceiling over the area where the laundry tub and washing machine now sit. I plan to block of this back section and convert it to a cupboard laundry which will be accessed from the bathroom and it will have a cool skylight. My bathroom is very large so can take the cupboard doors to a laundry.
Then I will take the first two metres of the room and use as a walk-in-pantry. It is a few metres away from my kitchen proper but I will not be a hassle. Joles, I am not putting a freezer or fridge in my planned pantry, I have weighed it up, and really, I don't need to mass freeze food or store large quantities, stores are open seven days a week these days and I have only my husband and I at home now. I could fit a fridge in there and work shelving around it but think I would rather have the storage space. Although I must admit, my youngest son stored some furniture with us whilst he was between houses, and his little bar fridge came in very handy for wine and drinks over the Christmas period. So maybe a bar fridge would be good. I already have power points in there from existing laundry. I plan to keep some limited everyday things, spreads, cooking oil and sauces etc in the kitchen, but house baking needs and less frequently used items in the pantry. I think it will also have to house the sandwich maker/toaster/rice cooker too, although I would bring them out to use. I think the winerack is a good idea. We have very open plan house and the pantry would possibly be the coolest (in temperature) place for wine....... I think the idea with room at the foot of shelving for larger items is a good idea, I have a couple of big trays I use when we bar-be-que, and a fish smoker (yum) so, the list so far 1. Infrequently used items; top shelf 2. Designated area for recipe books 3. Wine Rack 4. Appliance storage 5. Floor storage at the base 6. Dry foodstuffs 7. Bar fridge (maybe) Re: Walk-In Pantry shelving 10May 31, 2009 1:31 pm Sorry to ask a silly question, but to those who keep their microwave, toaster etc in the pantry, do you have a smoke detector in your pantry? Re: Walk-In Pantry shelving 11May 31, 2009 1:48 pm gettingThere Sorry to ask a silly question, but to those who keep their microwave, toaster etc in the pantry, do you have a smoke detector in your pantry? No I won't. The reason for me is that the toaster will be used in there and the way my family burns toast it will be going off all the time. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Walk-In Pantry shelving 12May 31, 2009 2:41 pm My pantry is a little over 5m by 2m and will have shelving along the longest wall returning across the short wall - like a "L" shape. The builder is installing 4 shelves - about 450/500mm apart. The bottom two shelves will be 450mm deep and the top two will be 300mm deep. We will keep all our small electrical appliances on the lower shelves and food on the higher shelves. The microwave / kettle / toaster / coffee machine will sit on the top 450mm shelf as this is where they will be used. We will also have an exhaust fan in there to keep any food smells to a minimum. I have just bought 15 large glass cookie jars so all my dry goods will be in matching jars - and hopefully look pretty as well as another 10 large Decor plastic containers for anything else that needs storing. We are considering getting the builder to leave the smaller deep shelf off the smaller return and installing a wine fridge underneath the other deep shelf - then reds can be stored above on the other 3 shelves (although we do also have a separate bar area in the garage so this may or may not eventuate). Some other great pantries from past forumers are Ladyice and Mrs B - if you search on their threads you will be awestruck with their pantries. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: Walk-In Pantry shelving 14Jun 01, 2009 1:32 pm That's a good tip about the wine rack being down low. I usually only have half a dozen or so bottles at any time (I keep drinking it!
I wouldn's use my toaster etc in the pantry. Would just be storage but may have to see how my pot drawers etc in kitchen renovation pan out (if you pardon the pun) as I might have space for them in the kitchen proper. We only use the toaster occasionly, not every morning as some do, so that would not be a hassle. Kyton, great idea about all the glass jars, we have Howards Storage World in Hobart now so might check them out. How does everyone store their herbs and spices; any ideas or brandnames of shelving etc that is good for these small jars? Have seen the draw insert with them all ****** face up but not sure how much these are? Have seen an idea of small wire baskets fixed to the back of pantry doors that house spices etc but can't locate the pic again now that I want a better look. Re: Walk-In Pantry shelving 15Jun 03, 2009 9:48 am That second photo you posted - yup ... I'm stealing that idea too!! Here is my first attempt at pantry plans: http://lucyshouseblog.blogspot.com/2009 ... tempt.html I'm aiming to have a bench in there with the big electrical items on it ... so I needed to have space between the bench and the first shelf to include tall mixers etc ... but I didn't want all the shelves to start that high (I'm only short). I'm going to get cupboards/draws to put below the bench - perhaps on rollers ... ikea sort of stuff. Thought it would be easier to clean out and less mouse attracting!!! My microwave isn't going to be in there (didn't want the heat/moisture in the pantry) ... but putting a upright freezer on one wall (so will have heat anyway!!). For spices - I'm actually planning on having them in a draw in the actual kitchen (easy to grab whilst cooking) ... with a little dowelling piece to tip them up (if that makes sense!). I went through and measured my containers - the big cereal boxes etc ... hoping that I'll have created enough tall room. I also measured how high the top shelf that I can reach is ... I've got one shelf over that height for long term storage. I'll be interested to see what other people have too. Re: Walk-In Pantry shelving 16Jun 03, 2009 2:51 pm Lucyshouse; I like your attention to detail. I think it is a good idea to mix up the heights of the shelving. As I put my use-again grocery bags away today I even thought of making somewhere specific for them. So much to obsess over isn't there? We had the wire racks on the door in our old place and they worked really well. I've seen them at storage places like Howard's Storage World, IKEA or Store, and I'm pretty sure K Mart has them too. Maybe Bunnings as well...? This is so I can keep the appearance of having a clean home while the dishes pile up hidden away At the moment I keep everything in dekko containers but because my shelves are too deep they have to sit in front of each other which is an absolute hassel. This time around my shelves will not be deeper than 300mm. Nothing will sit in front of anything else. My shelves will be adjustable so if I'm not happy in a few years time I will just change it around. I'm also having my mini freezer in there and we are installing an exhaust fan mainly due to the steam from the dishwasher.
