Browse Forums Finishing Touch 1 Sep 05, 2008 11:28 pm I am wanting flat or matt paint on walls in our living room and bedrooms when they're repainted.
I don't like glossy finishes AT ALL, but so many people say to get low sheen/gloss. I don't know... On the websites for the paints, they all say flat is good for bedrooms and living rooms (low traffic areas), and low sheen/gloss is best for bathrooms and kitchens and hallways (higher traffic areas)... We're not getting the kitchen or bathrooms repainted, so...is flat ok? And how much of a difference is there really between the two? I know it says flat has 3% gloss and low sheen has 6%, so not a huge difference, but in everyone's experience, can you really tell the difference? How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Re: Flat or Low Sheen/Gloss? 2Sep 08, 2008 5:14 pm ...anybody?? How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Re: Flat or Low Sheen/Gloss? 3Sep 08, 2008 5:41 pm GS - if Michelle were here she'd tell you to go for the low sheen - even on the ceiling as it reflects any light thrown on it quite nicely.
Flat paint marks extremely easily - you'll see every scratch you make on it - while low sheen is more forgiving. You'll also never get a stain off flat paint without leaving an ugly dull mark. On low sheen paint - use really diluted sugar soap and a soft sponge and most marks will disappear and your paint work won't look any different. The only place flat paint is used by most project builders is on ceilings (but we are requesting low sheen) After 4 years - we're in! Re: Flat or Low Sheen/Gloss? 4Sep 08, 2008 5:42 pm I cannot tell the difference between flat and low sheen, to me there is no sheen in low sheen, it looks flat but I know of someone who accidentally used flat and it marked like crazy and wouldn't clean. Re: Flat or Low Sheen/Gloss? 5Sep 08, 2008 5:51 pm Oh my god, really?
I'm gonna tell the painters to use low sheen then and not flat!! Why why why does every single website (Dulux, Taubmans, Wattyl, Bristol) say flat is best for bedrooms and lounge rooms?!?! How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Re: Flat or Low Sheen/Gloss? 6Sep 08, 2008 10:26 pm No idea, we have always been advised to use low sheen. Like you I don't like shiny walls and many years ago asked for flat only to be told it wasn't a good idea. I have low sheen in every room and there is definitely no sheen to be seen. 4 5022 If you can calculate the reasonable charged head from let's say 100mm below the gutter to the top of where the vertical riser's horizontal discharge pipe will be, that… 11 14466 Those span tables can be pushed a little for a low deck if you dont mind a little flex.
