Browse Forums Finishing Touch 1 Aug 11, 2008 12:32 pm hi guys.
we are getting the chrome lever type handles on our doors rather than knobs. I am living with the same ones at the moment and am ALWAYS bumping into the ends of them as I go past. It is painful and results in unbecoming yellow bruises on my forearms. I also worry about children bumping their heads on them as they run around, though this hasn't happened yet... Is it just me being too clumsy? Does anyone else think they are dangerous? Re: Dangerous door handles 2Aug 11, 2008 12:46 pm You’re lucky you haven’t hooked a piece of clothing in them as yet also!!!
I have a thing about door handles and kitchen door handles……I see problems with a few that are out at the moment. Although they seem to be MY problems only, as none of my clients have ever said anything about what are my concerns. Except you now donuts. Internal and External Building and Colour Consultant Online - Worldwide http://www.denovoconcepts.com Re: Dangerous door handles 4Aug 11, 2008 3:59 pm I love the lever handles. In our situation, with mum having the beginnings of arthritis in her hands, levers were very important for ease of opening. We even changed the garage one to a lever. Much easier to open with a hand full of shopping. Levers are also easier for little hands.
For the kitchen bar handles we made sure the style we chose has the piece between the bar and the cupboard right at the end of the bar so it is harder to catch clothing. The bar handles again were about ease of opening for the old chook. I actually don't knock the levers and I'm the clumsiest person in the world. But getting through a doorway without hitting the frame, that's another challenge. Jo I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. I've never had them before so hopefully I am just getting used to them. Plus the main one I seem to knock it on opens up against the pantry door, so it never actually sits flush with the wall - might have something to do with it -bad design. I do like the look of them and ease of opening when you have stuff in your hands Re: Dangerous door handles 6Aug 11, 2008 5:42 pm No, you're not the only ones
We have them here and they are at my shoulder level, and yes Michelle we have torn clothes on them...both DH and myself have hooked short sleeves on them. But they are high enough so that the kids don't hurt themselves. But they are high enough so that the kids don't hurt themselves. I guess my question here is, why are the handles hung so high now? I have had a think about it, and I can’t come up with a rational reason for it. Anyone want to help me out with that one? Again this seems wrong, what if a child accidently shuts the door to their room and can’t get out? They will get in a panic. Well donuts, we aren’t the only ones. I don’t have them. I do like the look of them and the functionality of them. I just feel they can be a problem. The number of times our little ones have locked themselves in their room .
Thank goodness my youngest (almost 4yo) has worked out how to stand on a stool to open the toilet door as I was having to do that for him all day long too 'chelle We have a hand-over date...15/10...but I won't hold my breath! http://people-in-glass-houses.blogspot.com/ Re: Dangerous door handles 9Aug 11, 2008 6:16 pm Shoulder level! Ouch!
Some of the period homes I've lived in have had shoulder height handles (but knobs) - I guess that was just the style? I found it quite handy for keeping DS in his room at nap time! But no idea why they do it in new homes Re: Dangerous door handles 10Aug 11, 2008 6:19 pm Yes chelle, about 40 years ago (and further back) all handle wear was hung high.
Then the height came down to the waist, so I’m wondering why it has gone back up again? I hope there not up, it is for no sensible purpose. I must finally be used to them.
(I have caught a few clothes sleeves but no damage done ) Re: Dangerous door handles 14Aug 19, 2008 1:27 pm donuts Well, I am pleased to report that in the week since I posted this, I have NOT EVEN ONCE bumped into the door handles. I must finally be used to them. (I have caught a few clothes sleeves but no damage done ) Well done Donuts! Funny that your thread popped up when it did, I was just wondering about putting our privacy locks under the door handle rather than on top. What do you think? Happy at Home Re: Dangerous door handles 16Aug 19, 2008 1:36 pm donuts I think under would be nicer. Less noticeable. I haven't even thought about locks. I've been looking at bog pic's today, I think I would prefer ours to be under too, they really stick out when on top. Sorry if anyone has them on top I don't think we were asked about position when we picked them but after looking at some doors it's made me decide that I will ask them to be under Happy at Home Re: Dangerous door handles 18Aug 19, 2008 5:11 pm Paula H2B, I vote under as well! Thanks Paula, definitely going with them under Haven't found any pics on the blogs with them under but from all the pics showing them above I've made my decision. Happy at Home Re: Dangerous door handles 19Aug 19, 2008 5:17 pm HTB,
Can you post a pic of what they look like? I can't find a pic. I'm having four privacy locks and it never occurred to me to think where they would go...
