Browse Forums Finishing Touch 1 Feb 16, 2016 5:58 pm Hi all, We are shortly going to be repainting the exterior of our house. The details: 1. Edwardian, double brick, no decorative features or fretwork apart from a panelled door which is about to have a new leadlight put in. 2. South facing 3. Tall brick fence. 4. Terracotta tiled roof (original tiles) 5. Red brick paved drive I would like a warm light stone colour for the main (it is already painted over the bricks so leaving red brick exposed on the walls is not an option. I am now onto my 12th sample pot and still not there yet. We have tried: Wattyl Smooth Horizon (fantastic colour but darker than we want), Smooth Horizon Half (too washed out) Haymes Refuge, Solidity, Minimalist 5 (all too grey) Dulux Limed White, Vanilla Quake (too grey), Self-Destruct (too yellow/creamy), Stone (too green) Berger Grey Feather (too grey) Colorbond Dune (too pink/grey) There are more but they were more grey so I won't include them. "Best" colour so far is Smooth Horizon, but it is too dark for our orientation. Tried half-strength - too washed out and pulled greyish/dishwater. Self-Destruct looked promising but is too creamy/yellow when painted out. Fascia and gutters will be dark warm grey (either Wattyl Thunderbolt or Haymes Intimacy), and windows, eaves, gable woodwork, and doorframe will be Dulux Natural White or Wattyl Magic White, most likely. The biggest issues are the bricks and the southerly aspect - the latter makes everything "grey out". Any ideas??? I would be eternally grateful. Re: Colour experts: HELP!! Drowning in exterior choices 2Nov 21, 2016 9:59 pm Just read your post many months on - did you end up finding a suitable colour? I'm trying to guess how much colour depth you're after... I would suggest looking at Dulux Sandy Day which would be of similar depth to Limed White. It's less grey and slightly more brown. If you're after more depth then Dulux Natural Embrace might be the go, this is just a triple strength of the Sandy Day. A slightly more creamy version of the Sandy Day colour (but still not yellowish) is Dulux Buff It. In Taubmans you might like to look at Arctic Cotton. This is a neutral grey-brown and should complement the red surrounds like the others above. Or... You might like to take a different approach altogether. Consider a very white neutral such as Haymes Minimalist 1. In daylight for an exterior this will appear quite white with a tinge of warm brown through it. You mentioned you didn't like Haymes Refuge as it was too grey (it contains a bit of yellow ochre too), well this would be similar to triple strength of the Minimalist 1 (no ochre), but you're quite right about it appearing grey - it will start to appear grey as the depth increases, but Minimalist 1 being so light won't appear grey. I hope you find the perfect grey and that you're not going grey in the process! I totally agree with everything you have written. Thanks again for your always excellent input and advice. I really enjoy reading your posts cheers Simeon 1 3280 Hi, Currently building, we are on a sloping block so we have from floor level to the roof in axon cladding.
