Browse Forums Finishing Touch 1 Aug 25, 2015 12:02 pm Hi! I want to ask someone who is a painter or who knows a bit about painting, whether a primer should be used when painting onto bare plasterboard? Our builder has advised "standard" is 2 coats of DULUX Professional Interior Low Sheen without primer?! Thanks! Building a modified version of The Sandridge through Homestead Homes. Re: Paint question for those who are paint experts??!! 2Aug 27, 2015 10:25 pm We have recently painted our house, ourselves. Some of the walls were new gyprock. Definitely paint with undercoat first then 2 coats of the final paint colour. Good luck. Re: Paint question for those who are paint experts??!! 3Aug 31, 2015 12:56 pm Ah ok! Thanks! Looks like we're going to have to pay the extra to upgrade for primer! So frustrating that we have to pay more when it has to be done! Re: Paint question for those who are paint experts??!! 4Aug 31, 2015 9:47 pm More to the point, the word primer actually refers to a tighter binding undercoat which is more designed for preparing a surface which paint wouldn't normally stick to. You will have no problem with paint sticking to paperface plasterboard, but you will have problems with it seeping in to well at the joins causing sheen differences where you will never gt the top coat to look correct. You actually NEED to apply an acrylic sealer undercoat first. Not a primer, primer is a very different thing. You can use Dulux total prep (acrylic primer sealer undercoat all in one) but this is a waste of money as you should just be using an acrylic sealer undercoat. If someone tells you you can use any paint as a sealer, tell them Dulux have told you you cant (hi, yes Dulux). If your painter tries to tell you this, get a new painter. Painters dont know alot about paint, they know how to apply it. Im shocked at how many tradesmen who have been "IN THE BUSINESS FOR YEARS" have not been through a basic 100 dollar technical training course to understand the knowledge gained from millions of dollars in invested in the development of the products we sell to them. Re: Paint question for those who are paint experts??!! 5Aug 31, 2015 10:16 pm I second Dulux. The staff in my local Dulux Trade store were so helpful Re: Paint question for those who are paint experts??!! 6Sep 01, 2015 12:01 pm Thanks for responding rebuilder86. That's great advise. It's actually my builder that's told me this. The email I received from Them was - "The following Standard Internal Paint Colours have been approved by Dulux as providing an acceptable two coat finish:- Antique White USA, Barrister White, Beige Royal, Berkshire White, Bone White, Buff It, China White, Ecru, Grand Piano, Hog Bristle, Homestead Whisper, Male, Peplum, Raw Cotton, Sago, Sandy Day, Scallywag, Seed Pearl, Stowe White, White Duck." I asked if she has written official Dulux specification for this approval and they didn't respond. Building a modified version of The Sandridge through Homestead Homes. Re: Paint question for those who are paint experts??!! 7Sep 02, 2015 8:23 pm It is possible that they are tinting the sealer and counting that as a coat. Its common practice but results in a less durable topcoat. Re: Paint question for those who are paint experts??!! 8Sep 03, 2015 11:08 am Yes, it is important for you to prime your bare plasterboards before painting. Apply two coats of prime before painting. I totally agree with everything you have written. Thanks again for your always excellent input and advice.
