Browse Forums Finishing Touch 1 Jan 01, 2015 9:01 am I've started on painting my new home now, and been busy using putty to fill all the nail holes in the skirting and architraves, which has proved somewhat fiddly and time consuming. However I was talking to a mate last night who told me not to worry about using putty, but use no more gaps instead. Just smear it in to the hole smooth to the edges, and when dry just paint over it. Sounds nice and much easier than putty, sand, then paint, but is it "too good to be true" ? Would I regret taking this short cut later, and wish I had've stuck to the tried and true putty then sand ? I'm still going to need some no more gaps to do the edges where the skirting/architraves meet the walls, so if I can do the nail holes with it, I can do it all at the same time. Re: Filling holes with putty or no more gaps ? 2Jan 01, 2015 9:12 am My experience is that no more gaps shrink leaving a slight indentation and it is also hard to remove all the excess from around the hole. I am old school and prefer to use a filler that dries and can by sanded like polyfiller if the timber is to be painted. You could always try filling some test holes. If the timber is to be stained I use a filler that matches the colour of the stain. Where are the latest photos showing the progress you must have made over the Christmas - New Years break. I am old school and prefer to use a filler that dries and can by sanded like polyfiller if the timber is to be painted. That's what I was concerned about, the shrinking of no more gaps, leaving that indentation. Likewise up until yesterday I had planned to use wood putty to fill, then sand off the excess. Agreed, keep it as close to the natural wood colour/stain, but since it is being painted there's no need to match the colour, as the primer then paint will cover it up. I've been meaning to do that, just been too pre-occupied with the idea of getting things finished off asap, so I can get out of this rental and back in to a home that we own.
