Tile Paint - anyone used it??

Hi,

We will be putting our house on the market this year but need to do a few things in order to get it ready.
We have hideous wall tiles in our bathroom (I don't know what the previous owners were thinking

The floor tiles are a beige which is fine but the walls are light grey with coloured fish on them, they're horrid.
Being that we're just getting the house ready to sell I thought the cheaper option was to paint over them instead
of replacing them. The ensuite isn't that big, can't swing a cat in it as they say, just the walls and into the shower area.

For anyone that's used tile paint how effective is it, is it easy to use, is it messy, happy with the results etc?

My auntie used in when she wanted to freshen up & sell an investment unit. The bathroom wall tiles were in good condition, just a horrid mustard colour from the early 70s and had (much like your fish) little pictures of trees every 3rd tile. The floor tiles were a darker beige and had actually aged reasonably well. She used a white tile paint from the hardware store, a good quality tile cleaner, and some alcohol type solution which removed any residual grime/gunk/glue and made sure they were dry.
Newspapered and masked up the floor, shower screen and where the wall tiles met the wall paint and rollered the tile paint on with a small roller.
She did two coats and it come up a million bucks!
Had a nice glossy sheen to it as well, and just lifted the whole bathroom. She never used the bathroom or had it tenanted after that, so I dont know how it held up, but it looked like they were just plain white tiles.

She did it on her own in an afternoon.

I dont know what the brand was, but it was just bought from Bunnings and had the instructions on the tin.

All the best with it! (and yes, I never understood that fish/trees/shells picture fascination on tiles!) some are just hideous!

Thanks deluxes, I picked up a brochure from Bunnings for White Knight tile paint.

My husband hates the idea of painting over tiles as he doesn't like the finish but now you
can get a gloss finish so I'm thinking anything's got to be better than those coloured fish,lol.

hahaha well i'm sure in the past people have used regular wall paint to go over tiles, resulting in a bit of a chalky dull finish, so no wonder he's a bit scared!

If you are using a specialised tile paint, it will come out glossy instead of flat and dull like a wall paint would.

lol yes! Banish those fish

The White Knight tile paint is excellent. I used it in on my laundry tiles and kitchen tiles (white over daggy 70's green). Perfect.

Did the kitchen 10 years ago and laundry a year ago. Very durable. Can't tell it's paint. I wouldn't do the floor though.

I did a quick search using the advanced search engine thingy at the top and the only other mention i could find from Michelle was the one below. I'm out of time now. Work calls and as I sadly didn't win Lotto and my holidays are over I've got to go.

Michelle didn't seem too confident about the tile paint in it. BUT I think she was happy with it when she used it. ( I maybe wrong.) Why not PM her and ask.


I did find a very old reference to it from Michelle though in which she said, "You can buy a “TEXTURE PEN” that you use to colour the grout! It’s a special one for that purpose!

But you’re better off in the long run to bite the bullet and re-tile. There are some many great tiles available, so why limit your selection."

Hi Guys, I actually used full gloss enamel paint on my bathroom wall tiles. Ready to do yet another paint over as the white paint when yellow!! This time it will be full gloss enamel dark grey. But the bathroom will have to wait till I get back from my 3 week trip to South Africa next April Even though the paint when yellow, I can NOT scratch it off the tiles. So it has stick to the tiles extremely well.

You can see the old tiles past the bath. The bathroom will get a new vanity which has been sitting in the garage for 3 years and tapes. New flooring and paint the tiles.....thats it, then I sit here till I sell again with the renos I have done.

Remember these are quick fixes...if you want a really smick bathroom or kitchen you need to replace the tiles.
