Browse Forums Finishing Touch 1 Feb 24, 2014 7:08 pm We are building our home with a local builder, a custom build so it's up to us to make all the choices for the house. At the moment I'm looking at paint, trying to choose colours inside and out. There are so many brands so I thought what better place to ask for help than here (love this site). What's the best all round brand, easy to clean, long lasting, reasonable price etc. Any advice would be great, thanks so much Loving our new home, Upper Hunter NSW on 2.5 acres Re: What brand of paint to use? 2Feb 24, 2014 10:33 pm For my personal house, I supplied my own paint to ensure I got what I paid for. On advice from the paint store: Haymes Ultra Premium undercoat- 1 coat. Haymes Ultra Premium ceiling paint- 2 coats Wattyl ID wall paint 2 coats. The store said Haymes Ultra Premium, Wattyl ID and Dulux wash and wear are all excellent low sheen paints. I used Wattyl as I have had good results in the past. Wattyl oil based satin enamel for doors and trim. Wattyl Solagard for soffits and exterior painted doors. Re: What brand of paint to use? 3Feb 24, 2014 11:17 pm I think Wattyl solarguard is great for outside, for inside? Taubmans. It always mixes up exactly like the samples. There's never any variation. It does exactly what it says it will do re scrubbing or whatever (some say scrubbable and they are, but then you are left with a shiny patch) and it's hard wearing. It may not be the cheapest but it is very good value. As for the finish, Low sheen is the best all round finish to get if you have kids, but if not, in my opinion flat paint looks wonderful if you have a good even surface to paint. Otherwise you see every flaw in the surface with this finish. Re: What brand of paint to use? 5Feb 25, 2014 9:54 pm There is another factor. There are so many "whites" that you need to know exactly what the white base is made up of. The better paints standardize their bases. Using a cheap base can turn out differently cos the base may be off white, not true white. Re: What brand of paint to use? 7Mar 04, 2014 1:54 pm Thank you all so much for your replies. I'll be looking at Haymes, Dulux, Taubmans & Wattyl and I guess it depends on price too. I'm getting my final quote for the house in the next couple of days so I'll see what's been allocated for painting and go from there. Thanks for the help, much appreciated. Today is under construction. Thank you for understanding. Re: What brand of paint to use? 10Apr 19, 2014 8:42 pm sanjam Hi I think solverand wattyl come from same factory. Correct, wattyl bought solver. Re: What brand of paint to use? 11Apr 19, 2014 9:14 pm I have so many paint swatches it's so confusing. I know if I find a colour I like it can be made by any paint brand. For the interior I'm steering towards Dulux, Haymes or Taubmans at this stage. Is there much difference in the prices of brands? Thanks for all your comments, much appreciated. Whatever you do, get a good primer! Solver and Wattyl are Owned By Valspar and come out of the same Factory. Taubmans is a part of the PPG Group Re: What brand of paint to use? 13May 30, 2014 4:48 pm Taubmans gold 'endure' came out top of the Choice tests for wear/scrubbing/etc, for whatever that is worth. Or at least, it did a year or two ago. My dad used 'generic, whatever the paint shop is selling' in the past and that stuff was -awful-. Yeah, good quality paint costs more, but the end result would have been worth it! Land settled May '14. I'm thinking of using Taubmans for the interior, got a sample pot of Zurich White which I like and the outside either Taubmans or Wattyl. Any bit of information is helpful, thanks much appreciated. After coat 4 I went and bought some Dulux, which was much better. We mostly use Dulux Wash and Wear and more recently have used Wattyl ID. Have been happy with both. Re: What brand of paint to use? 17Jul 08, 2014 9:52 pm I've tried just about all the brands in previous properties. I absolutely love the dulux wash and wear which is what I've selected for my build. I haven't used the Taubmans gold endure though. That sounds good if it's easy to clean according to Choice. Re: What brand of paint to use? 19Sep 23, 2014 6:53 pm I probably used more brands than most over the years but tend towards the upper price bracket for consistent quality of tints and materials etc. Probably the most important things is preparation of the surface but the biggest tip I have for those new to painting is to find a reputable paint store that deals only in paint. Thank you. That is really helpful. Once we get the place done and passed for OC we can upgrade in the future once we get back on our feet and not paying mortgage and rent. 4 3995 That sucks!
