Browse Forums Finishing Touch 1 May 12, 2008 4:11 pm I've just had the exterior painting done & the painter has gone and used gloss for the front doors rather than the satin I requested. The argument they're giving me is that as the colour is black, it needs to be glossy to reflect the sun & prevent warping. All the houses that have inspired me for this project have black satin front doors. Is the painter right or should I insist he redoes as he was asked in the first place?

I actually had to sign a waiver that the warranty on the doors would be void by using a dark colour. There was nothing further mentioned then about the finish. 1) It is tougher than satin. And last longer. IMO the painter has done the right thing. And it’s not a matter of what you paid for Gloss is dearer! If he was my painter and used satin I would insist he came back to do gloss. Would it be ok for an interior painter to do your room a light blue instead of pink like you asked, just because it's a nursury and you have a baby boy, and they reckon light blue is better? I'm amased that you had to waiver the door warrenty because you wanted it a dark colour!! As for the gloss / satin issue ...... you wanted satin. They probably made a mistake & told you that to get out of it. Satin or Gloss shouldn't make a differance on how strong / durable the paint is. The type of paint is important tho ....
