Browse Forums Finishing Touch 1 May 12, 2008 4:11 pm I've just had the exterior painting done & the painter has gone and used gloss for the front doors rather than the satin I requested. The argument they're giving me is that as the colour is black, it needs to be glossy to reflect the sun & prevent warping. All the houses that have inspired me for this project have black satin front doors. Is the painter right or should I insist he redoes as he was asked in the first place?
Cheers Toon Re: Exterior front door paint finish 2May 12, 2008 4:24 pm insist!
thats the most ludicrous excuse I have heard for a while tho! 10 points! Re: Exterior front door paint finish 4May 12, 2008 4:35 pm LOL that's interesting, as our builder refused to paint ours black when we asked due to the risk of warping and sun-damage...not covered by the warranty if we did.
I'd say ask for what you paid for!!!! If you want black satin then insist on black satin!!!!! Re: Exterior front door paint finish 5May 12, 2008 4:48 pm Thanks Nicola,
I actually had to sign a waiver that the warranty on the doors would be void by using a dark colour. There was nothing further mentioned then about the finish. I figure, I've already waived the warranty on the colour, I may as well have the finish I want. Cheers Toon Re: Exterior front door paint finish 6May 12, 2008 9:00 pm I ONLY use GLOSS for doors!
1) It is tougher than satin. And last longer. IMO the painter has done the right thing. And it’s not a matter of what you paid for Gloss is dearer! If he was my painter and used satin I would insist he came back to do gloss. Would it be ok for an interior painter to do your room a light blue instead of pink like you asked, just because it's a nursury and you have a baby boy, and they reckon light blue is better? No. Warping dark doors 8Sep 25, 2008 1:53 pm What ???? Ok, external doors need to be tough and solid don't they?
I'm amased that you had to waiver the door warrenty because you wanted it a dark colour!! As for the gloss / satin issue ...... you wanted satin. They probably made a mistake & told you that to get out of it. Satin or Gloss shouldn't make a differance on how strong / durable the paint is. The type of paint is important tho .... I know a few door painters who will only use two pack polyurethane. Good luck .... Timbacare - Save Your Furniture!
