Browse Forums Finishing Touch 1 May 30, 2013 9:56 am We are seriously considering a black and white colour scheme thru the whole house ... but have had a few people tell us it will date very quickly. I am wanting a opinions ... We are trying to set a modern type feel to the house, but are very weary of how quick some modern concepts date. We also want the house to maintain a 'homely' feel, many modern homes lack that modern comfy feeling when you walk inside. To keep the homely feel we have opted for Spotted Gum flooring and also a feature gas log fire on a feature wall splitting the family and living rooms I was thinking something along these lines for the kitchen colours http://www.fashiolista.com/item/7837833 ... =pinterest http://pinterest.com/pin/116460340336893259/ And something like this for the bathrooms http://pinterest.com/pin/116460340336893289/ I would love a 'graffiti wall' in the shower on the main ensuite, but do think that will date quite quickly. http://pinterest.com/pin/116460340336893321/ For the guest powder room down stairs I would love to have something very different http://pinterest.com/pin/116460340336893321/ I am after honest opinions, particularly about dating. We are planning on staying for a long time, but do not want to renovate becasue we have the house in a few years. Re: Help with colour scheme ... Black and White 3May 30, 2013 8:27 pm Black-and-white is unlikely to date in and of itself, but the style of your furnishings or kitchen finishes, etc, could. However, that's unrelated to the colour scheme. I would just put it together how it appeals to you. Everything gets a little 'dated', simply from the wear and tear of use; part of 'dated' is usually 'shabby'. Think of older kitchens where the bench was narrower and the sink went from wall to flush with the bench edge rather than being inset into a benchtop. It simply is not how it is done now so no matter what colours are involved, it looks dated. Even were such a setup sparkling new and shiny, it would still look dated. So yeah. Don't worry about the colours, look at the style of the things. Try to get the proportions aesthetically attractive and it'll be fine. Black and white or blue and grey or lime-green and orange ( ... ok, maybe not that last combo ), it'll still look gracefully appealing in a few decades if the flow of the space and the proportions are right. Edit: Specifically, I see nothing about that kitchen or bathroom that will particularly date them. The grafitti wall I find hard to imagine... the pin you listed look terribly busy and would leave me feeling claustrophobic how it was used in the picture. But as a feature in the shower? Hmm. Truth, it would probably date less than the current 'vertical strip of fancy feature tile' which I see done all over the place at the moment. It's the kind of thing I would suggest as a wall-paper feature wall rather than in a shower? Land settled May '14. Black and White 4May 31, 2013 8:02 am I agree with dragonchild's comments, I also believe its unlikely to date, my own house will have a black and white theme, the interior doors will be black, my kitchen will have a black island and all my internal walls will be white, I'll have blackbutt floors. I'll have black lampshades in my daughters bedrooms and feature wallpaper that's mainly black and white with coloured butterflies and birds throughout. Check out the houzz website, it will have a lot of variations of black and white decorating to give you some ideas. Re: Help with colour scheme ... Black and White 5Jun 11, 2013 8:12 pm I agree, everything dates. I personally (and I may be shot down for this) find black and white incredibly stark and jarring. I guess there's nothing wrong with it, it just feels quite clinical and cold if its left on its own and not decorated properly. The black and white look however can be totally "warmed" with the use of a natural element, like wood pieces. Some accentuate it with retina shattering bright pops of colour, but that's a way to date something real quick. Use softer color shades or better yet, play with texture and natural elements to soften the starkness black & white can bring if its not done right... Black and White 6Jun 12, 2013 2:39 pm Sorry but that Grafitti in the pic is overkill and I think cheapen's the look I am having a white kitchen with black tile splashback - which I am regretting now. Hopefully it will look nice when finished. Can always change the tiles later. I am stuck with my heavy country look furniture though so have had to adjust my expectations of a Modern look back to a more cosy look. Using creams and browns with a splash of Turquoise. I should let you know that I am also doing a black and white interior so I'm biased! We'll be finished in the few weeks so I'll post a pic or two when we're done. Good luck! Thankyou for your advice.
