Browse Forums Finishing Touch 1 Oct 22, 2012 6:41 pm Hi all, this is my first post here. I have been reading for quite some time and have been a member for a couple weeks now. We are in the process of building our new home, which is a fairly traditional, long, country style home set on a 1 acre block. Attached is the front view of the home. As for the colour choice we think we have narrowed it down. The slab is going down at the moment and we need to chose our exterior colours to order the roof materials. We have chosen the bricks already (photo also attached). -Bricks - Selkirk Maclaren (different as of July this year - new ones pictured below) -Roof - Woodland grey (or possibly ironstone?) -Gutters/dowpipes - Manor red -Veranda posts - Manor red -Facias - Classic cream -Garage doors - Classic cream -Windows - Primrose We are happy with the above combination from other homes we have seen locally however we are a little undecided on the best roof colour to match??? My shed we put up is woodland grey and it looks fine. Doesn't look to green, however when we have seen it on other homes is looks like the colour varies a little, and it might be too light. I think ironstone might have to be ruled out as well as it looks a little too blue. Opinions please??? Re: Exterior Colour opinions. 3Oct 22, 2012 7:41 pm Treeseachanger Hi hsvboy11, I think that the woodland grey would look awesome against those bricks. Hi there, thanks for your comments. I'm fairly sure that is actually a woodland roof in the photo with the bricks we have ordered, and if it's not, I wouldn't mind knowing what that colour could be? Re: Exterior Colour opinions. 4Oct 22, 2012 7:58 pm I know someone with woodland grey on red bricks. Looks great! What about 'monument' if you are after a darker roof? Build thread : /viewtopic.php?f=31&t=60288 Re: Exterior Colour opinions. 5Oct 22, 2012 8:07 pm I did think about monument, as a friend has it, but he has a fairly different colour scheme to me. I dont know how the red gutters and cream facias/windows would go with it? Also, I did have concerns about the real dark colours fading? Woodland would be less noticeable. Re: Exterior Colour opinions. 6Oct 22, 2012 8:23 pm The roof in the photo looks a bit too light to be woodland grey to me... Not sure what. Windspray maybe but that usually throws blue. CLB will fade somewhat given time, but not noticeably unless you were to put a new sheet against the old. I think monument will be too dark, it has a slight purple undertone as well. Woodland grey will look good because it has a slight greenish undertone and so complements the red brick. Re: Exterior Colour opinions. 7Oct 22, 2012 11:25 pm Hi, Nice house. Your brick has red/grey/blue toning’s and I would be careful with the creams. Consider sticking to the greys. Your roof design would look good with a different gutter and fascia colour. It looks like the fascia shown in the photo is woodland grey with a light grey roof (I would rethink that carefully). Most times roofs, gutters and fascias should be in one colour especially when there are no eaves. Try to blend the downpipes in with the brick colour. Downpipes should not be a feature. As you have your shed in woodland grey it would look odd having a different roof colour on the house especially if close by. I was sitting in my car waiting for the traffic lights to change and noticed that the woodland grey on the MacDonald’s roof had faded hugely and this surprised me as the store is only 5 years old. Depending on where you live, colorbond roofs can fade greatly (usually the darker colours). Check out the below link and have a play with the roof colours (Ironstone???). http://colorbond.autech.com.au/onlinevi ... esidential Cheers PS Re: Exterior Colour opinions. 8Oct 23, 2012 6:48 am Hi again, thanks for your time in posting. I think we might go with the woodland grey as we first planned. I haven't got a photo handy of the brick colour and other colours together, but here's one I took with a similar style. The roof is tiled which makes it hard to imagine but at least the colour is similar. Then they used manor red for the gutters/downpipes/posts as we planned to have with the cream facias and primrose windows. Remember also that our downpipes run down the veranda posts and not down the wall. There is a house around the corner from me with the red/cream using pressed red/blue bricks. Maybe I should snap a shot of that one. Cheers. The eyes like harmony and most people don’t like contrasts (Primrose is a contrast). The window frames should have a colour relationship with the brick. Most window manufactures have a woeful colour selection for window frames and if you’re lucky it includes some colorbond colours. Select a colour for the window frames out of the brick colouration that also fits with your interior scheme because window frames bring the colour scheme inside the house. Should your brick be more an orange red, Headland would also look great against Woodland Grey (modern country style). Is your fascia board colorbond or painted timber? Your fascia board and the uprights should be light to medium coloured. Cheers PS Re: Exterior Colour opinions. 10Oct 24, 2012 7:44 pm Hi there, thanks again for your comments ecofriendly. On the subject of the window colour, we actually appreciate the contrast of the light coloured windows against the bricks. For example, we found that houses in the area like the one pictured below, just seemed too plain and we want the windows to stand out: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ This is the kind of style/contrast/look we were planning on going for, snapped these couple tonight, looks like most do have the woodland grey roof: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Cheers. ps: our main roof also has a 300mm eave right around, and the facias we have not selected but we were planning on going for some colorbond ones. Re: Exterior Colour opinions. 11Oct 24, 2012 8:17 pm We are having limestone bricks, and anodic dk gray windows. I think the contrast looks great! It reminds me of the era in which houses all had leadlight panes or very dark wood windows, no matter what colour brick. . . So in the end I think it's personal taste. Re: Exterior Colour opinions. 12Oct 25, 2012 11:06 am Hi, All pictures (colour schemes) look very similar and if used on your house will give you a good idea of the end result. The first picture in my opinion has too much grey and looks very bland. Option One: - Bricks - Selkirk Maclaren (as selected) - Roof - Woodland Grey - Gutters – Manor Red - Fascia’s - Classic cream – Downpipes – Classic Cream - Veranda posts – Classic Cream - Garage doors - Classic cream - Window frames – Primrose Option Two (Contrast): - Bricks - Selkirk Maclaren (as selected) - Mortar - off-white, Finish: flush - Roof - Woodland Grey - Gutters – Manor Red - Fascia’s – Surf Mist – Downpipes – Surf Mist - Veranda posts – Surf Mist - Garage doors – Manor Red - Window Frames – Woodland Grey or similar grey Cheers PS Re: Exterior Colour opinions. 13Oct 27, 2012 6:48 am Thanks for the advice. We have ordered the roof in woodland grey, the windows in primrose and the gutters in manor red. We will decide on the colour for the posts/downpipes when to get to them. It will be easier to see once we have a roof and some bricks up. Frames start going up monday. Re: Exterior Colour opinions. 14Oct 27, 2012 10:03 am On the CLB visualiser you can see a house with classic cream gutters and manor red roof. Its the country 1 traditional 1 scheme. All you have to do is change the roof to woodland gray and render to tan brick (probably the closest to McLaren?) to see the scheme looks good. They have verandah posts though. Of course you could change any of the schemes and use a modern elevation (except with some you can't change the window frame colours). But have a go, you can do a close up of your gutters and downpipes too just by choosing the gutters tab. Re: Exterior Colour opinions. 15Oct 28, 2012 1:27 pm Thanks for that, I did have a play around with the visualiser before posting this thread however it was hard to pick an accurate brick colour- and the colours never look the same compared to in real life. Also tried photoshopping our front elevation as im a bit of a ps wiz but couldn't for the heck of me work out how to create a texture using an actual photo of the bricks I had. Not to worry, won't be long and the house will be up and finished. I think we might go with the option 1 scheme ecofriendly posted, with the cream posts.
