Browse Forums Finishing Touch 1 May 12, 2012 1:28 pm I am using an oil based paint on my front door (a gorgeous high gloss blood red!) and just realised I bought a water based primer. It's the Taubmans 3 in 1 which, at the time, I was only asking for something that could be used inside and out so I was also able to use on my external window frames. Can I use it for the door or do I have to buy another tin? (I really hope I can, the 3in1 was almost $30 for a small tin! ) Building in Bacchus Re: Can you paint oil based paint over water based primer? 2May 12, 2012 7:59 pm No acrylic primer is perfectly suitable for oil topcoats. @builderforlife Building inspector and passionate about construction When you need an expert to take a look. Re: Can you paint oil based paint over water based primer? 3May 13, 2012 4:24 pm Oh great, thanks for replying. On another note, if anyone happens to read this, I have restored some old windows myself and have had to re-putty around some of the glass. On the instructions for the putty they note that the putty needs to be painted between 2 and 4 weeks of application. I have prepped them but will be leaving the painting to the builder. If the windows are stored out of the weather and kept clean, will the putty be ok to have paint applied after the 4 weeks? Building starts in about three weeks so I imagine painting is a couple of months away. Building in Bacchus I'm about to put down some Merbau.
