If DIY means you have to rent your existing place for a while that adds around $400 for each weeks delay. I'd go for the pro job except for 'feature' walls which i would do myself. (4bed, study, 2bath + 3 living areas) False saving, what the builder charges you won't be the same as the refund you wil get. They will add there margin to the cost but you wont get that refunded. And unless you have painted a house before, that's a full house from scratch do you really know what you are getting yourself into? Re: Interior Paint costs - DIY vs Professional 4Apr 20, 2012 4:54 pm Thanks for the feedback. We both live rent-free at the moment, so that is not an issue. The cost of building doesn't include wall paint (only ceiling & cornice), so either way we need pay for the paint. We are tossing up if we should pay for the labour too - plenty family and friends are willing to help, but we want the job done properly (if we can afford it). Any idea of costs? 29/02/12 Land Deposit 28/03/12 Home Deposit 12/06/12 Loan Approval 19/06/12 Land Settlement 04/07/12 Prestart 30/08/12 Building Permit http://number-04.blogspot.com.au Re: Interior Paint costs - DIY vs Professional 5Apr 20, 2012 5:35 pm Our allowance for our new build , a large 4 bed 2 bath, study, dining and 3 living areas came to approx $11,000. We are going to put the money elsewhere and do it ourselves, hubby can use the spray paint gun and dad loves to paint. We are only going to have a couple of different neutral colours. 2/2010 8 acres purchased 11/2011 plans submitted 3/2012 plans approved 13/4 slab done 16/5 brickwork and roof finished 4/6 lock up 29/6 kitchen and bathrooms in 30/6 currently painting Re: Interior Paint costs - DIY vs Professional 6Apr 20, 2012 6:10 pm Thanks - it's great to know a rough figure. How much are you saving by doing it yourself? I was told if you spray the paint (rather than roll) it is more likely to crack - have you know anything about that? 29/02/12 Land Deposit 28/03/12 Home Deposit 12/06/12 Loan Approval 19/06/12 Land Settlement 04/07/12 Prestart 30/08/12 Building Permit http://number-04.blogspot.com.au Re: Interior Paint costs - DIY vs Professional 7Apr 20, 2012 7:50 pm 1st timers are you still getting the ceiling and cornice done by the builder? Either way thats where the spraying ends. Walls are rolled except some good painters may spray an extra coat on the wall plaster joints when they are sealing the ceiling. Anything that gets sprayed needs to be back rolled to make it even. Otherwise you will have a ceiling full of spray marks. The other thing I would consider is how long you plan to stay in the house, less than 5 yrs and IMO you will take a much bigger hit when selling than you will save by DIYing. Not being mean, but a trained eye will tell in an instant if its been an amateur paint job. Cheers Re: Interior Paint costs - DIY vs Professional 8Apr 20, 2012 8:03 pm Painting a room is hard work, I could never imagine painting a whole house. If you do decide to DIY see if you can get a painter to buy the paint for you. If you pay full retail for all your paint it may just work out that it wont be that much more expensive to have a professional paint for you. I was told if you spray the paint (rather than roll) it is more likely to crack - have you know anything about that? Apparently If it goes on to thick it can crack. We are spraying all walls first then ceiling you just need to mask up the walls with plastic to keep the over spray off. But I guess if you haven't had any experience in this you would be better rolling? I guess we will be saving $9,000 + roughly. 2/2010 8 acres purchased 11/2011 plans submitted 3/2012 plans approved 13/4 slab done 16/5 brickwork and roof finished 4/6 lock up 29/6 kitchen and bathrooms in 30/6 currently painting Re: Interior Paint costs - DIY vs Professional 11Apr 24, 2012 6:42 pm Thanks everyone or your advice and suggestions. Ideally we would have a professional, but it doesn't look like our budget will allow for it. Luckily my partner's parents have a lot of experience painting houses and have offered to help us out. I have just paid my painter extra to pint the feature walls in the kids bedrooms as I couldn't be bothered with it. Obviously if your budget won't stretch then you don't have a choice, could you get a few quotes and try and work something out with them? Have you tried you tube for hints and tips? It's a reno so there was existing paint. I've used 45 litres for the ceilings and probably once I'm finished 60 litres for the walls. I'm not doing the woodwork. What I will say is that ceilings are more difficult to do than walls and this is where the difference tends to be in the finish quality. IMO all woodwork including doors must be done in enamel with a spray gun and since you're doing that then you may as well spray the ceiling as well. Walls on the other hand are fairly easy. That said technique and practice is required to achieve a good finish even on walls. It's a big job - I've spent about 10 weekends and probably have 4 to go but I can only work about 6 hours a day so I guess you can add it up very roughly and say around 170 hours. Is this really what you want to do for the first 170 hours of free time in your new house? (not including woodwork and sealing etc). Either way I'd get a pro to do the ceilings and woodwork (woodwork as an absolute necessity) and since you're doing that then you may as well pay them to do the whole lot. I've used Wattyl ID - steer clear of the cheaper trade versions. It cost about $160 per 15 litres for ceilings and $183 per walls. So allow $1500 + enamel (whatever that is - say another $600) for materials. Hope this helps... Re: Interior Paint costs - DIY vs Professional 15May 08, 2012 12:26 pm If your other half's parents are experienced in interior painting & are willing to help you out, I say go for it. At least the house is empty, which makes things so much easier. We painted inside our previous house (walls, ceilings, sash windows, skirts, door frames etc.) while we were still living in it & was choc full of furniture . On the walls, (going from grey to whisper white), we undercoated then d/h used the spray gun & I followed up with a roller. D/h has spray painted a few cars over the years so has the technique down pretty good, so it worked out a bit quicker & easier for us to do it that way. I personally don't like a spray painted finish on the walls without rollering afterwards. I think the texture of a rolled finish looks much nicer. But proper preparation is the key to a good end result. Don't take any shortcuts. "Whoever says sunshine brings happiness has never danced in the rain!"
