Browse Forums Finishing Touch 1 Oct 08, 2011 5:15 pm Our paint chips really really easy with the slightest knock of something and when fixing patches and trying to get rid of the loose paint around the patch, it doesn't stop coming away, it just keeps chipping and chipping, (like I'm sure I could just about rip off the entire wall if I kept going!) Some walls are worse than others. Even a fit ball that was sitting against the wall for a couple of hours tore the paint off when I pulled it away! Any ideas why this would be?? We have been in our house for a year now, and we used the builders painters who we paid cash to and the builder recommended them as some of the best around, to do the walls. Our house is also double brick, so not sure if that makes a difference, but that's standard here. We really aren't happy as our house is covered in chipped walls. Re: Paint chipping really easy? 2Oct 08, 2011 6:01 pm Hi Rizzo Did the painters leave any touch up paint behind after they completed the job ? If so it would be an idea to ring the paint company and ask for the local rep to drop by and give his thoughts as to why the paint failed. Ring the builder and also ask him to inspect the work Ultimately the builder should insist the painters return and rectify the problem with the job completed a short time ago. Doesnt matter you paid the painters by cash. Would be good to know what type of paint they used and on to what type of surface...gyrock, render, hard set plaster etc. Post some more info if you can and some people might be able to come up with a few senarios. Make some calls...you shouldnt have to wear the problem. Re: Paint chipping really easy? 3Oct 08, 2011 6:24 pm from limited info it appears the paint has trouble staying attached to the surface it was applied to - after such a short period of time, this could be an issue with paint quality and/or poor surface preparation Re: Paint chipping really easy? 4Oct 08, 2011 6:49 pm It was dulux wash and wear (or so the tin says) We asked for Dulux as the colour we wanted was from them. I do have to chase the builders up as I have no idea who the painters were. All I know is that the builders include everything except the internal walls, but they let their painters stay and do the walls while doing the rest of the house if we wanted to use them. We paid $7500 cash just for the internal walls, so wasn't cheap! We've not had a problem with any of the other painted surfaces, only the walls. The builder is a high end builder and I trust their judgement on quality trades. The walls are brick with I guess the render plaster then white set (sorry, not sure what the correct names for them are). It's done it pretty much since we moved in. We are wondering if the walls weren't sealed first... possibly? I don't know, but I'm not happy. We have had so many things go wrong from supposedly the best tradies. We have paid the higher prices for them too, and I'm just so over it!! Re: Paint chipping really easy? 5Oct 08, 2011 6:59 pm as 4walls said, this is a paint adhesion problem from either poor quality paint or improper prep work. This shouldn't be happening after 1 year so I would get onto the painter to come back and take a look at it. Re: Paint chipping really easy? 7Oct 09, 2011 7:02 pm Hi Rizzo Sounds like set plaster. This surface must be sealed like most new surfaces prior to applying the topcoats...but it must be done with a specific sealer. A common mistake is to apply acrylic sealer or even oil based sealer to the surface but Dulux is quite specific that it must be sealed with a product called sealer binder. If you ring your local Dulux trade centre they will give you the number of the local rep if you feel you need to be armed with more info prior to contacting your builder. The rep will only be too happy to follow up on your concerns.....but its pretty evident this product was not used on your walls. The sealer binders job is to bind the surface of the set plaster so to allow adhesion of the top coats. Further coats applied to the walls wont arrest the underlying adhesion problem, so it will be an ongoing problem...and a big one. Be nice... be assertive and ask the builder to help rectify the problem. They have left you with an ongoing problem that will not be cheap to fix.,,,,but the sooner you act will only help your case. Good Luck Re: Paint chipping really easy? 8Oct 09, 2011 7:15 pm If you have paid the painters cash to do the job then you are up sh!t creek without a paddle. It sounds like poor preperation but like I said if you have no reciept from the builder or painters then I can't see how you can chase them even though it is their fault. A bank is a place that will lend you money only if you can prove that you don't need it... Re: Paint chipping really easy? 10Oct 10, 2011 9:28 pm Hey Rizzo Not sure about the tiny hairline cracks, but its not so uncommon with set plaster work....so many variables that can cause these cracks. No big deal to fix. Again the Dulux rep should be able to answer this issue. Buttercup makes the point that it may be difficult to have the work rectified by the original painters. Here in NSW any work over $1K must have both parties sign a contract. Not sure in WA. Without a contract nothing can be enforced really. Still its worth asking your builder for help in getting the original painters back or asking for the painters details. I know many painters who would return to fix their problem and a few who wouldnt. Hope you are fortunate. If the Painter has a web site or promotes his business online he will not appreciate any negative feedback. Likewise for the builder who recommended the painters. do not pay until you are satisfied with workmanship windows require flashing over the head archithrave and up under weatherboards 3 28287 DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair I mean, I install them/sell them for a living so I haven't done DIY, unless you count the first one I installed lol.
