Re: What to do with an entrance passage 24Dec 27, 2007 5:44 am Anyone wonder why I introduced Lurch into this thread?
Lurch represents the true function of an entrance. Think about it.... All guests arriving at the Addams home were greeted by Lurch and the ritual of entering their home. There were formal introductions, and the hat was ceremoniously removed, & maybe an overcoat. The entrance had provisions to accommodate these items. Actually most of those old American shows often had similar rituals. A closet was always a feature near the front door. The entrance has a specific practical purpose of accommodating the transition from outdoors to the indoor environment. In other cultures (such as Japanese) again there are formal ritualized practices of removing outdoor foot-wear, and donning soft slippers for inside the home. Us Aussies, (as charming as we are with our very casual ways) seem to have forgotten the true function of various parts of our homes. When bec asked about her entrance, I'm sure the aesthetic aspects of the entrance were uppermost in her mind (and that of most respondents). This is typically how people think. So, when designing a home, thought should be given to such things for very practical reasons. How/where is soil collected and disposed of? Where will your shoes be stored? Should every home have a shoe cupboard or rack and/or closet near the entrance/s? What type of materials and sizes are your doormats and floor-coverings as you enter the home? Considerations such as these in the planning stage can make life a helluvalot easier once you are living in your home! Ash. Re: What to do with an entrance passage 25Dec 27, 2007 10:09 pm thats very good advice
yes we do have a coat/shoe cupboard but its next to entrance from garage... we will be doing most of our coming and going there so is there a need for two coat/shoe cupboards in a house? I guess so with the study near the front door which has a filing area with door close to the study door, I can see now maybe I could utilise that area perhaps for "guests" coats/shoes, thanks just wondering do many people here ask guests to take off shoes Re: What to do with an entrance passage 26Dec 28, 2007 8:38 am Quote: just wondering do many people here ask guests to take off shoes I've always thought this would be a great idea but, no, we don't do it. Can't imagine my sons and their mates following it anyway. Enough of a battle to stop them wearing football boots in the house! Oh, well, at least hubby takes his steel cap work boots off on the front porch. Re: What to do with an entrance passage 27Dec 28, 2007 8:53 am bec just wondering do many people here ask guests to take off shoes I did in our last place. To save the timber floor. The kids were not allowed in with dirty/muddy shoes, tradies and visitors wearing stilletto's... Now before anyone comments, there were no tradies who turned up in stillettos', but wouldn't that be a funny look!!! Re: What to do with an entrance passage 28Dec 28, 2007 9:24 am bec just wondering do many people here ask guests to take off shoes We never had in our old unit. It had cheap builder's polyester carpet - we lived there 6 years and everyone wore their shoes inside. We had a stiff coir doormat out the front to collect dirt and the front entrance section was a bit dirty - but otherwise - the carpet was not too dirty. When the guy game to steam clean it after the movers took out everything, he was surprised that the carpet was 6 yrs old and never had been cleaned! Ash - any chance we could see a pic of your front entrance? Carpet at the entrance sounds intriguing as we were thinking of tile. Ash - any chance we could see a pic of your front entrance? Carpet at the entrance sounds intriguing as we were thinking of tile. Suggest you send me an email, and I can send you a pic. The carpet is an axminster. We have a fairly small home, and tend to dump our shoes in the entrance, and go barefoot or with sox at home. I recall when my sons used to play alot in sand at school, and they would empty kilos of it from their shoes! They were required to leave them in a rack near the door in the garage, and empty the sand each day. I have to be honest here.... I hate housework, and my wife ain't much better! We are certainly NOT clean freaks, so we are pretty good at preventative strategies, so we don't have to keep cleaning. Our boys have grown up knowing that there are different zones for different activities (indoor/outdoor/meals etc). Now that they are getting older, their shoes get bloody smelly! and their shoes are definitely left on the rack! When it comes to guests though, we're pretty easy going, and let them wear shoes if they want, (unless they want to take em off). Ash. Re: What to do with an entrance passage 33Dec 28, 2007 7:11 pm bec we will be having wooden floors and I want to be able to ask guests not to wear stilletos..not sure how it will go down though... Love it! I had some clients once, who asked me around to see the finished result of their home when they moved in. I was greeted at the door, politely told to take my shoes off, which I have no problem with at all. We had coffee and home made scones that she had made for my visit. I sat at the table with a plastic table mat and plate, and was not game to drop a crumb from the scone for fear of him running to get the vacuum cleaner!!!!! He then wanted to show me the laundry that I put colours together for, it was out adjoining the garage. I was pulled up short at the garage door and given a pair of scuffs to walk through the garage with so my feet would not get dirt on them for when I came back into the house!!!!! PLEASE…… now that’s going over board. I was flat out keeping a straight face the whole time I was there. And these two were trying to have a baby……the poor kid!!!! Ask your visitors to take their shoes off….its your home and they will respect your wishes. I find it incredible when I hear of that. Trying? If you have to TRY, I reckon there HAS to be something wrong. I mean, just get down and boogie, baby! Have a good time and it all falls into place! OK I'm being terribly insensitive, and should bite my tongue. But hey, that's my take on it. There are too many folk with terribly tangled knickers that could do well to chill! Ash. Internal and External Building and Colour Consultant Online - Worldwide http://www.denovoconcepts.com Re: What to do with an entrance passage 37Dec 29, 2007 8:49 am Bec - my neighbour used to have a little sign on the front door - it was a poem (can't remember how it went) but basically it asked anyone wearing heels to kindly leave them at the door .... people read it as they were waiting for the door to be opened and the majority of them complied no hassle..... those that didn't remove their shoes where then asked to remove them - usually it was just cause they hadn't read the sign
Fiona Re: What to do with an entrance passage 38Dec 29, 2007 9:08 am I think a little sign on the front porch with a quirky poem or such would be a very good way of nicely broaching this issue with visitors. Does anyone know of such a poem or similar that could be used?
We are going to have floating floors in entry and casual living of our house, while none of us wears stilettos (and football boot wearers will be dealt with severely!!) it would be a good way of avoiding problems with any visitors who may do so. Helyn. Re: What to do with an entrance passage 39Dec 29, 2007 10:20 am I think a sign is the way to go
Ive seen a cute no shoes sign (at those card shops that have gifts as well) but no no stilletos ones in our last house we had timber floors, a client came in with stilletos whilst sitting in the office discussing stuff must have been moving her feet up and down by the time she left there was HUGE deep scratches in our floor Re: What to do with an entrance passage 40Dec 29, 2007 12:37 pm Your welcome inside, but before you do
Remove your stilettos, your stockings too I'll make it worthwhile, and let you inside My floor will not suffer, no reason to chide But if you will not, must turn you away, So strip and come in, and make my day!
