Browse Forums Finishing Touch 1 Jan 16, 2011 7:44 pm I am trying to decide on some paint colours and was hoping for some feedback. I guess I am just looking for someone to bounce a few ideas off. (I apologise in advance for being "long winded")
White duck half strength will be the MAIN paint colour throughout the house- with WHITE trims and a few walls in "other paint colours" The "other paint colours" are what I am struggling with at the moment. I was originally trying to decide between bold or neutral and now I am steering towards doing a combination but I am still undecided. I may as well start with what has already been decided.... White duck half strength is already confirmed as my husband has already started painting in this colour. Flooring in these rooms will be Vinyl Planks "Summer Oak" http://i823.photobucket.com/albums/zz154/MiriamYT/Building%20our%20new%20home/summeroak.jpg Kitchen colours are porcelain gloss and licorice linea. (Splashback will probably be a chocolate colour to work with the licorice linea) http://i823.photobucket.com/albums/zz154/MiriamYT/Building%20our%20new%20home/kitchen10.jpg In the kitchen image above you will see a small part of a wall on the right hand side- This is one of the walls I am considering painting a slightly darker colour (but probably still neutral colour. I considered going bold but I think something more neutral will be safer) Here is the view of the rest of that wall from another angle (It is the wall on the left hand side the one with the doorway cut off and no windows) and is the first thing you see when you walk into the space from the entrance. (kitchen wasn't installed when this photo was taken but it is to your left in the image. You might be able to make out the pipes coming out of the concrete slab and this is where the kitchen island bench is now situated) http://i823.photobucket.com/albums/zz154/MiriamYT/Building%20our%20new%20home/20101030035_edited-1.jpg The colour I have considered for this wall is Dulux linseed http://i823.photobucket.com/albums/zz154/MiriamYT/Building%20our%20new%20home/linseed.jpg http://i823.photobucket.com/albums/zz154/MiriamYT/Building%20our%20new%20home/licoricelinea.jpg Main colours in this room will tie in with the chocolate type colours in the panels of the kitchen. The big windows in this room will have chocolate drapes. Do you think linseed looks OK with the other colours? Can you suggest another colour that you think may work better? Now if you walk into this room a little futher you get a bit of a 'peek' into the games room through the doorway. It will obviously have a door on it but the door has glass panels so the colour of this wall will be visible from the main living area. http://i823.photobucket.com/albums/zz154/MiriamYT/Building%20our%20new%20home/20101030036_edited-1.jpg and standing inside the games room- It is this wall here. (window covering will most likely be white venetians- I wanted shutters but can't afford them at the moment) http://i823.photobucket.com/albums/zz154/MiriamYT/Building%20our%20new%20home/20101030050_edited-1.jpg The colour I am considering for this wall is Dulux "Sheer Passion" http://i823.photobucket.com/albums/zz154/MiriamYT/Building%20our%20new%20home/sheerpassion.jpg Here is a link to an example of a sheer passion wall on Dulux website (You will probably have the scroll through the examples until you get to the one that says "sheer passion" I wasn't sure how to make a direct link) http://www.duluxpromotions.com.au/pages ... on-gallery What do you think of the colour? To me it seems to resemble colours like "Red capsicum" and "murray river red". Originally I was looking for something 'deeper'- more blood red rather than rust/warm browny red but I can't really find anything like that in colour swatches. I think at night time "sheer passion" would look quite dark anyway. Can you suggest an alternative that you think may be a better choice? Should I just paint this linseed too? There is another room off this main living area which will be less visible because it has an obscured glass door but the wall is visible from the main living area when the door is open. (wooden door) (Again the kitchen hadn't been installed when I took this photo) http://i823.photobucket.com/albums/zz154/MiriamYT/Building%20our%20new%20home/mainliving.jpg and this is the actual wall http://i823.photobucket.com/albums/zz154/MiriamYT/Building%20our%20new%20home/20101030038_edited-1.jpg So what do you think? From the main living area you will see touches of a red wall in the two adjoing rooms. and then I can use some red cushions and other accessories in the main living area. I think I will also paint the entry wall and master bedroom wall in dulux linseed too. (excuse the photos- I realise it is hard to imagine what they look like as I took these when the gyprock was first put on the wall so no cornices or anything Entry wall http://i823.photobucket.com/albums/zz154/MiriamYT/Building%20our%20new%20home/20101030016_edited-1-1.jpg Bedroom wall http://i823.photobucket.com/albums/zz154/MiriamYT/Building%20our%20new%20home/20101030018_edited-1-1.jpg Re: Feedback wanted on colour choices 2Jan 16, 2011 10:19 pm Great thread. So okay, i think Linseed would work really well, the only other colour i would suggest is these 2... Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ As for the reds, i think its a great and well thought idea to have the reds in the two adjoining rooms. The only other reds i can suggest is... Red Stop (might be too earthy), Red Box (might be just a bit too bright) or Henna Red. I think having the more neutral colour in the entrance and bedroom is a great idea. Brings the house together when colours are found in different parts of the house. And makes it easier to decorate coz you can swap and change things from one room to the next. Hope this helps. I appreciate the feedback and it is nice to be able to bounce some ideas off someone (I'd much rather have someone say- Oh that's going to look awful BEFORE we put the paint on the wall) We are actually having "red box" in my son's room and although it will be perfect for him- I think you're right it might just be a bit too bright for the main living area. I've seen it on splashbacks before and I think it looks great but might be a bit too much on the walls I am looking at. I was actually hoping to find a 'deeper/richer red' but can't find anything on the dulux colour charts. I looked at Marakesh red but I think that is too 'purple'. The colour doesn't have to necessarily be dulux- it just happens to be where I found most of the other colours I like! Re: Feedback requested on colour choices 4Jan 17, 2011 2:47 pm I forgot to add- The warm grey, oyster linen and linseed look quite similar to each when they are lined up like that- don't they? (or at least on my monitor they look similar) I wasn't sure whether I should pick a colour that is a little darker (and not necessarily with the grey tones) but the more I look at the sample the more I think I'm actually leaning more towards the linseed. I expect it will probably look quite dark with a pure white skirting board up against it and white ceilings.....and our flooring as well. Re: Feedback requested on colour choices 5Jan 17, 2011 3:32 pm Yeah, they do all look very similar. Linseed being the darker of the 3. Hmm... here is a pic of Linseed..just scroll down the thread... viewtopic.php?f=6&t=36961 I think its a perfect balance. I was at bunnings this morning and swung past the paint aisle... Henna Red i thought was quite dark blood red on the sample card. Check out the taubmans colour selector..it has the rooms from 'the block' and you can drag and swap all the colours so u can see them on walls...http://www.taubmans.com.au/public/colou ... our=Zirkon Just completed DIPLOMA INTERIOR DESIGN!! http://www.thelittleshouse.blogspot.com Check out our progress thread... viewtopic.php?f=38&t=39954&p=596811#p596811 Re: Feedback requested on colour choices 6Jan 17, 2011 3:57 pm oooh- that example looks lovely! I'm sold! I haven't got a sample card for the henna red. I'll have to check out and see it up against sheer passion. Off to check out the taubmans range! Thanks for the link! Re: Feedback requested on colour choices 7Jan 26, 2011 8:42 pm Well I went and got a sample card for "Dulux Henna Red" and it is much closer to the colour I like. "Henna red" seems to be more of a deep blood red when compared with "Dulux Sheer passion" (which looks to be more is more of a dusty red) Although on a small sample it is closer to the colour I like it does concern me that it might be 'too much' on a wall so.... I returned and got a sample pot- and I've painted a section of gyprock but it hadn't dried properly by the time I left. I'll go back tomorrow and see what they look like side by side. I also got a sample of Solver Beaver to compare with the Dulux Linseed. My husband is concerned that the Linseed is too 'green'. Oh well- I guess I'll see what they look like tomorrow Might even remember to take my camera this time LOL! Re: Feedback requested on colour choices 8Jan 28, 2011 11:47 pm Ok I'm back with photos and I'm still undecided and I'm not sure that my ******* photos will help! I guess I'm just at that point of sharing some thoughts and looking to bounce a few ideas around So here we go- I'll start with the neutrals. I am trying to decide between Dulux Linseed (L) and Solver Beaver (R) (but I am open to suggestions) Here are the two colours side by side Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Hmm- Doesn't look much of a difference really when you look at the photo- does it? The linseed seems to throw a bit of green and the beaver seems to throw a bit of pink. On its own I think I prefer the beaver colour (and my husband prefers the beaver) however when you put it up against Half Strength White duck it looks even more pink. I am leaning towards the Linseed only because it seems to 'work better' with the other choices. Beaver or Linseed? What do you think? I guess I could even try White Duck Full strength- but I'm not sure it will give it the right kind of 'oomph' We would use the neutral behind our bed in the bedroom and on this entry wall Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ and this wall of the living room Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ There are two smaller walls I plan to paint a red colour (A wall in my 'studio' and a wall in the games room) As I've mentioned previously both rooms will be visible from the living room as they have glass panels on the doors. At the moment I am trying to decide between Dulux Sheer passion and Dulux Red Henna (which was suggested to me thanks ) Here they are side by side Sheer passion on the left and red henna on the right Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ In real life the red henna seems much 'deeper' than the sheer passion although I don't think this photo shows that very well Here is red henna leaning up against the wall I plan to paint (You can see the wall to the right has been painted in White Duck Half strength) Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ and the sheer passion Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ They look quite similar don't they? Do YOU have a preference? Has anyone used either of these colours and would you recommend it? Do you have photos you could share? All 4 colours side by side- again not necessarily the best photo but it shows the differences between the colours a little better Left to right red henna, sheer passion, linseed and beaver. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: Feedback requested on colour choices 9Jan 29, 2011 6:32 am I actually liked your original mock-up sample Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ only it wasn't clear what's Vivid White for?? Ceiling? And is that a clear non-tint white? But ... out of these 4 runner ups, I'd always go for Linseed (over Beaver), although I'm not sure about the reds. I preferred Sheer Passion, but it does look too weak against (the quite strong) Linseed - but Henna maybe looks too dark to me (maybe it's just the screen). However, I think both go well with White Duck half! BTW, I would not even think about Beaver, it's too pink for me. These reds need a clean and calming contrast. My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: Feedback requested on colour choices 10Jan 29, 2011 8:10 am I like the Linseed - I think that will look really good with the white trims. And for the red colour - I like the red henna. What I would do is leave the coloured boards in the rooms they might go in for another day and see if I was naturally more drawn to one over the other. Good luck with deciding! Re: Feedback requested on colour choices 11Feb 01, 2011 1:11 pm Definitely agree on the Linseed over the Beaver, which is the wrong tone with White Duck - as you've noticed. Can't help on the reds, sorry as they change with each pic. Probably either will go, though. Re: Feedback requested on colour choices 12Feb 01, 2011 6:57 pm Yep- I think Linseed is definitely the way to go! Thanks for the feedback. In another thread I asked for feedback on a Linseed splashback and Mrs Rose shared some photos that are definitely steering me towards a linseed wall and a linseed splashback. I think either of the reds will look fine! I will try what has been suggested and just leave them sitting in the rooms and see which one I most drawn to. The Henna Red is definitely the deeper/darker of the two(although my crappy photos don't show that) As a 'general colour' I am drawn more to the Henna Red- for example if I was picking up a coloured pencil or picking out a t-shirt colour for one of my kids to wear but I'm not sure it is the best choice for the wall. I will give it a few more days with the colour boards sitting there and hopefully I'll be able to make a choice. At the moment there are no window treatments or flooring and I'm wondering whether the Henna Red might be a bit too dark once that all goes in. I definitely love it as a colour but I think Sheer passion may be a 'safer choice'. I'll let you know what I decide and will be sure to share some pics! Re: Feedback requested on colour choices 13Feb 01, 2011 9:25 pm I think the Linseed also, for the neutral feature walls. As for the reds, either look great!! I'm probably leaning more towards the Henna Red. I googled the colour and stumbled across an image from here on Homeone that looks really nice in that colour.....but we've already decided on Linseed. Although the walls haven't been painted in linseed, the paint has been purchased and I expect that they will be done this weekend (all things going well!)
