Hi all, I can't decide on a feature wall colour for my home and I have so many options swimming through my head. I would really love to see your suggestions or possibly see examples of colours you have used. My children have each selected a bright bold colour for their rooms. They all helped to select their colours and I have even managed to find bedding to suit the colours they have picked out. Their rooms are in a separate little wing so I don't mind that their colours are all very different. My husband wants a nice dark colour for his theatre room and it this stage I am leaning towards Wattly Cafe Noir However elsewhere in the house I really want the colours to flow from one room to another. The main colours in the house are an off-white and chocolate. Our main wall colours will be Dulux White Duck Half strength. Architraves/ skirtings etc will all Vivid White. We have a rich chocolate coloured floor tile in the wet areas. The remaining floors will be Karndean Vinyl planks in "summer oak". Our kitchen cabinetry is porcelain gloss with a section on the island bench that is LICORICE LINEA. The splashback has not been installed yet but will most likely be a chocolate colour too (metaline sophisticat) The drapes in the main living area will be a rich chocolate colour (as dark as Wattyl Cafe Noir) I was thinking that I might leave the main living area Dulux White Duck half strength because there will be 3 sets of drapes in that room in the strong rich colour. I will add a bit of colour to that room with cushions etc on the lounge chair. There are two rooms that are visible from the main living area and I want to paint a feature wall in those rooms. (One is the games room wall and the other is my studio) I also want to paint the wall behind my bed head in the same colour (I could go for a different colour as it is in a different part of the house however it would probably be easier to have those colours all the same) The three rooms with feature walls will more than likely have white timber look venetians. (Two of those walls will actually have the white venetians on them) Initially I was leaning towards a warm browny/ dark taupey colour. I have looked at loads of different swatches and colours I have looked at include Solver Beaver, Solver Wallaby, Dulux Self Destruct, Dulux Braid, Dulux Bedbox...just to name a few. I have only looked at the swatches though- not necessarily examples of these colours painted on a wall. What I was originally thinking was that if I have the Dulux White Duck and then Rich Chocolate plus a feature wall in a browny colour somewhere in between those two colours then I could introduce another colours with cushions and wall hangings etc. It leaves my options open. I could use deep reds or olive greens or even a turquoise colour and they would all look nice with the neutral base. Can anyone suggest something that might work? Now just to throw a spanner in the works I showed a couple of colour brochures to my husband last night and he surprised me by looking at far more 'daring colours' like Solver caribou and deep red colours like solver claret ash, and solver garnet. He knows I like those sorts of deep red colours and I wasn't sure whether that is why he pointed those sorts of colours out. I'm not sure whether to be 'brave' and use a daring colour or stick with something more neutral and introduce the deep reds in with cushions etc. Suggestions please! I can't wait to see some examples! Re: Suggest a feature wall colour Bold feature wall or neutr 2Jan 14, 2011 9:45 pm Sorry for such a long winded question- That's probably why no-one has responded. Let me make my question more simple... Would you go for a bold feature wall OR a darker neutral to add a bit of warmth and intensity? (Resale isn't an issue at this point in time as we plan to stay here a long time!) When I make that decision I will move onto colour choices LOL! Re: Suggest a feature wall colour! Bold feature wall or neut 3Jan 14, 2011 10:28 pm Personally I would go for a darker neutral... that's just me. I like colour in the furnishings, but with a brightly painted wall, it may be too much. I've seen on here lots of beautifully coloured walls though and some really bright. I guess you just have to decide what you really like... your tastes. Also what suits your furniture etc.... I like making new cushion covers every couple of years (or less ). Changing those colours might not be as easy if you have a brighter colour on the walls. More neutral coloured furniture could probably handle a bit more colour on the walls. Just my opinion. ... and... I would probably go something midway between the white duck and chocolate, but less brown. Not sure what the colours are that you mentioned, but is there really a colour called beaver? I wouldn't put that on the walls of my bedroom, not sure I'd be able to stop laughing long enough to fall asleep yes, I do need to grow up Re: Suggest a feature wall colour! I wouldn't put that on the walls of my bedroom, not sure I'd be able to stop laughing long enough to fall asleep yes, I do need to grow up [quote] Don't worry- there was a smile on my husband's face when he pointed out that colour for the bedroom too! I pretended to be the mature one and chose to ignore the cheeky smile and chose not reveal the fact that exactly the same thing crossed my mind too. (It would be a fun job coming up with the names of paint colours wouldn't it?!) I think all along my plan was to go with neutrals but now I am questioning my decision. I know it makes sense to choose neutrals for resale...but given resale isn't a factor for us right now...do I really have an excuse not to be brave? You raised the point about furniture and that has made me stop to think about the fact that it is a very good point. I can see in my mind 'the look' I'd like to achieve but don't necessarily have the furniture and furnishings to 'pull off the look' I'm after. I'd really love to buy all new furniture but it isn't realistic at this point in time. The reality is that by the time we can afford new furniture to complete 'the look'- I'll probably be over it! LOL! Re: Suggest a feature wall colour! Bold feature wall or neut 5Jan 15, 2011 7:51 am Miss, try uploading a pic of your wall to the Dulux site, I've used this site so often to help choose my feature wall colours... http://www.dulux.com.au/colour/mycolour Re: Suggest a feature wall colour! Bold feature wall or neut 6Jan 15, 2011 9:08 am Erin- I have seen that software before and it is a great idea- Unfortunately at the moment the walls I want to do are a completely blank canvas. No flooring.. no lighting..no window coverings....and obviously no furniture so although the site looks great it isn't going to help me at the moment. We want to get the painting all done before the flooring gets done. I actually considered suggesting we wait to do feature walls until after the flooring is done but after seeing how hard my husband is working on this I have reconsidered. My poor husband is doing the painting for the whole house (and hasn't even finished the gyprock sealing or ceilings and the house is 470 square metres) I think his plan is to complete the inside and then move outside (eaves, alfresco area, portico, garage roof, front doors, etc) I think once he has finished the painting I will have absolutely no chance of of getting him back inside to paint anytime soon! If I want them done it needs to happen now (and I am a shocking painter so couldn't do it on my own and expect it to look good LOL!) Re: Suggest a feature wall colour! Bold feature wall or neut 7Jan 15, 2011 9:18 am Ah I see, that does make it difficult. Perhaps still take a photo of the bare room, and throw the colour onto the wall to visualise it in mass? I'm more for lesser on the walls, more on the decor mainly because decor can be easily changed etc and for resale purposes in the future it'll suit more personal tastes...but adding a splash of colour can really spice up a room. Bold feature wall or neut 9Jan 15, 2011 8:47 pm Thanks heaps for your response Liz. I actually have a swatch card with "puppy" on it right here in front of me so it is definitely a possibility I have considered. I wondered if it might be a bit too 'pink' for me though- I'm not sure! This afternoon I decided to buy a couple of sample pots and have painted a section of plasterboard so I can see it in the actual rooms. I got one in "linseed" and one in "sheer passion" I have left them to dry and will check out the colours tomorrow. If I get a chance I will take some photos to upload- although it might not be tomorrow as we have a "home open" to try and sell our cuirrent house! Keep your fingers crossed for me! Re: Suggest a feature wall colour! Bold feature wall or neut 10Jan 15, 2011 10:31 pm No worries at all, how about more of a grey undertone feature wall colour? Just like Linseed, Tapestry Beige etc. Hope those samples go well over the next few days.
