Will be very keen to hear your thoughts Re: Spray Paint or roller 2Oct 06, 2010 6:17 am Spray will be faster and give a more consistent finish, but generally goes on thinner so depending on colours you're much more likely to see through it. My first two houses were spray painted and looked absolutely beautiful. This one was roller. Still beautiful but not as smooth a finish as the spray. REALLY smooth finish is good for cleaning marks off walls Re: Spray Paint or roller 3Oct 06, 2010 7:36 am Both have pros and cons, personally I prefer a rolled coat (well 2 actually, always do 2 top coats). The reason I prefer a rolled paint job is because of the thickness. When spraying, they should back roll anyway, so although the finish when spraying is slightly smoother, it is only smoother because it is thinner. If using a high quality paint, the paint will be just as washable when rolled as it is when sprayed (if not more so because of the thickness). For paint to cover properly and to have the highest washability, it has to have a minimum film thickness, often this isn’t achieved when spraying. If you want a smoother finish when rolling, use a roller with a smaller nap, you will dip into the paint tray more often, but you end up with less of that orange peel effect. Spray paint or roller? Will be very keen to hear your thoughts Better? In what way? As said above spray is much much much faster. If I was doing a room or a feature wall then I would just use a roller but a whole house? Definitly spraying it. I was just wondering because I thought that they would have spray painted our house but they are actually doing roller which I was very surprised coz spray paint take a lot less time than roller. Re: Spray Paint or roller 8Oct 08, 2010 9:16 am Sorry going to add my own question. Could you spray the sealant undercoat & then doing roller paint (colour) on top? DH & I are likely to have to paint whole house. This might be alot quicker. Thanks Re: Spray Paint or roller 10Oct 08, 2010 10:46 pm i'm building a house and i have omitted painting from my house because i didnt like any of the standard colours the builder offers. so i will paint it my self. i have a 200m2 single storey house. i was thinking of using a spray gun to paint the timber in the house eg doors, skirting, architraves as well as cornice. in other words, the areas that arent flat. and i will use a roller for the flat area ie plasterboard walls. could someone advise what kind of sprayer to get, and what to avoid. i read on another post that someone bought a cheap one from bunnings and the paint came out in blotches. should i use an air compressor and if yes, what size eg 2hp. it will just be for a one off job. also what kind of spray gun should i get eg i have seen the ones with a 1 litre pot, there are gravity feed one etc,, but i have no idea. the spray gun cost like $80 from bunnings. will this be sufficient for the job that will give reasonable quality. also is using an aircompressor with a spray gun easy to use. i've never used one, and have no idea about it. your comments appreciated Re: Spray Paint or roller 11Oct 09, 2010 7:18 am agent001 i'm building a house and i have omitted painting from my house because i didnt like any of the standard colours the builder offers. so i will paint it my self. i have a 200m2 single storey house. i was thinking of using a spray gun to paint the timber in the house eg doors, skirting, architraves as well as cornice. in other words, the areas that arent flat. and i will use a roller for the flat area ie plasterboard walls. could someone advise what kind of sprayer to get, and what to avoid. i read on another post that someone bought a cheap one from bunnings and the paint came out in blotches. should i use an air compressor and if yes, what size eg 2hp. it will just be for a one off job. also what kind of spray gun should i get eg i have seen the ones with a 1 litre pot, there are gravity feed one etc,, but i have no idea. the spray gun cost like $80 from bunnings. will this be sufficient for the job that will give reasonable quality. also is using an aircompressor with a spray gun easy to use. i've never used one, and have no idea about it. your comments appreciated Ask yourself, 'is learning how to spray paint a good idea on my home'? A safer option would be to use a painter for the spraying and you do the rolling. Re: Spray Paint or roller 12Oct 09, 2010 7:22 am Id be hiring a airless spray setup. Painting is easy, so is driving, cooking, cleaning and gardening, the list is endless, but there are pro's in all of those fields. no? are they contradictions too? Re: Spray Paint or roller 19Oct 31, 2010 8:12 pm TheOK Painting is easy, so is driving, cooking, cleaning and gardening, the list is endless, but there are pro's in all of those fields. no? are they contradictions too? Sure is easy! We painted the inside of our last place - for some reason I thought it would be wonderful to paint the house when I was 6 months pregnant .... hmm, wasn't that a great idea. Anyway, it was an easy job, we took our time, used good quality paints and brushes ... the colours chosen were perfect, but the quality of the finish was utter crap. Our house had lots of very large windows, hence heaps of natural light and our home paint job was definitely evident in the lovely natural light. In the end it cost us more as I couldn't stand looking at it and got the professionals to come in and repaint and it looked fantastic after that. Moral to my story, which is a bit off topic from the OP ... if you are a perfectionist and it will annoy the life out of you looking at uneven brush/roller/spray marks in your paint and you don't think you can do a perfect job yourself (that would be me) then it will be cheaper and quicker in the long run to have a professional paint for you. To answer the OP ... I like the rolled finish. I like the rippled look (if that's what you call it) that the roller leaves and I prefer the thickness of rolled on paint. ~ trying to build our dream home by the sea ~ Re: Spray Paint or roller 20Mar 27, 2011 7:57 pm Just an update on my earlier posts. I took handover of my 180m2 single storey 4 bedroom house on tuesday. I omitted painting from my house and saved $5000. Paint cost my around $1000, so by painting it myself, it save $4000. and I can have the pick of any paint colour I want. Those are the plus points. But each morning I wake up and face the mammoth task of painting the whole house, I say to myself, I’ll never build a house without paint again. Its exhausting, and messy work, plus I am fatigued as well. I used the wagner paint sprayer mentioned in my earlier posts. It draw paint straight from the paint tin, which is a must if you r planning to paint a whole house. Also, I had issues with paint coming out is tear drops, unevenly over the walls. That’s was frustrating as I had no idea what was wrong. The wagner call centre was useless, the lady didn’t know what she was talking about. So I took the sprayer to bunnings where I bought it, they looked at it, and took the nozzles apart and cleaned it. I tried it again and worked heaps better. From then one, I keep the nozzles very clean, and when u stop for 5 minutes, or the paint comes out blotchy, u have to clean it again. If u keep it clean, u will have no problems. For the house, I spray painted the whole house with undercoat in aprox 4 hours. The next day, I spray painted the walls in the whole house with one coat of wall paint in 2 hours. The speed of this machine is amazing, and for an amateur using this machine, I was really pleased with the results. I then painted one coat of ceiling paint in 2 hours. Again really pleased with the result. And then the next day, I painted the final coat of ceiling in 1.5 hours. The final result is really good, even finish, and I am particularly pleased because I thought the results would be rubbish and uneven, but it turned out really well. I then tried to paint all the woodwork with enamel paint, that was nasty as its hard to paint it if u haven’t masked up all the areas. It takes for ever to mask up, so I think I am stuck doing it by hand. Coz all the dirt on the floor coz sprayed onto the woodwork from the air coming out of the sprayer. So now I have to clean it off, and the enamel paint is so sticky. I will only paint the doors with the sprayer, after taking them all off their hinges, and then lining them in the garage. I will paint the final coat of wall paint with a brush and roller, and do the wood trims with a brush. That will take a long long time. Overall, the paint spayer is good, but the prep work took me 2 days to masked everything up. I probably wont do it again, and would only recommend the sprayer for painting a new house, b4 all the floor and window coverings are put in. I have motorised roller blinds in my house. I motorised all the blinds I use a lot and the ones that don’t get used too often I didn’t. I went through Motorise My… 2 5493 |
