Browse Forums Finishing Touch 1 Sep 25, 2010 7:44 pm I need some help, people! Anyone with a clue (or not ) is welcome to pitch their ideas... I have a pair of lamps that need a makeover and I'm dithering about what to do with them. So PLEASE... go check them out here and either leave a comment on my blog or post a reply here and tell me what you think. Ta. Re: Makeover assistance 2Sep 25, 2010 8:10 pm I like the shade. The base, not so much! Even the shape is a bit old fashion ay. You could paint it, platinum, silver, black, white, fire engine red? The shades could be dyed...(?) although I like the white I think the texture on the shade, needs to be taken into account. shabby shick/ shabby paris shick? because they are not plain, I think the bases are worth playing around with. If they were plain I wouldnt bother... maybe that is why you saved them. Do you like the writing? I do. Re: Makeover assistance 5Sep 26, 2010 11:25 am Hmm. I'm a bit torn, because there are so many choices.... I think the shades have to go. I could recover them, but the shape is just all wrong. I prefer a drum shade, like the one in Southies' picture. K Mart has a linen-look one that I think is about the right size for around $15, and I'm sure there are other options that don't cost a bomb. So the bases... without spending any money, I can go black (gloss, satin or matte? ), oil-rubbed bronze, shiny silver, antique white (distressed or not? ), or a walnut or chestnut stain with satin or gloss sealer. As for keeping them or not, Number One Son says he's moving out in a couple of months, so a lamp or two for our guest room/music room would be nice. Or maybe I'll donate one to him for his new abode... Re: Makeover assistance 6Sep 26, 2010 4:01 pm if I was spending $30 on 2 new lampshades..with those bases, even painted ...I would put the $30 towards new lamps!! The bases are still strange, but I think if all I was doing was buying paint (oil rubbed bronze sounds interesting) then do the base to compliment the shades and give it to the son as a house warming gift...$3.50 spent, and take the $26.50 and buy a new BEAUTIFUL lamp for the music room just me though...cos I recon the shades are ok, as they are in good condition, and if they are going into a guest room/ or to the son..who cares!! ha ha If they were going into the lounge...dont bother, bin em!! but they arent so spend as little as poss and make them FAB. then decide what to do with them. make sure you post a pic of what you eventually do....so intrigued! Re: Makeover assistance 8Sep 26, 2010 5:25 pm It's not about the money, it's the principle of not being wasteful. I'm sick of seeing all the stuff that gets thrown away... not good for the environment, and against my thrifty principles to boot. I think I'll try to sell the shades, or maybe just donate them to the local charity shop. As for the cost of paint, I intend to use paint that I already have, which is why I listed only a few colour choices. I've masked the electricals and primed the bases now, so I'm committed to doing something. I think black...and new black shades. Or possibly natural linen. I'm visualising a sophisticated guest room. Of course, the reality will be: sheet music, books and magazines strewn all over the floor, along with several pairs of shoes; guitars on the bed with assorted jumpers and other items of clothing; discarded guitar strings, old receipts and other crap on any table surfaces; and empty glasses and coffee cups everywhere. In fact, it will look exactly like the study, only with a bed. Why am I bothering? Re: Makeover assistance 12Sep 26, 2010 6:57 pm Don't know if I'd want to be cleaning the dust out of all those crevices if it was black! Though I gotta say I love your inspiration pic's - I think you'd achieve something close if you could find a great shade. Re: Makeover assistance 13Sep 27, 2010 1:29 am to me the thing that looks *wrong* or *dated* about those lamps is the wood bases but paint would easily transform them. I'd go for white for a shabby chic or country look and black for something more sophisticated. I personally don't think they'd look right with drum shades, to me those shade do suit them and you can easily and cheaply recover those with some spray on adhesive and fabric, add some decorative trim and they are done and it will cost pennies compared to buying new shades (which I don't think is necessary). It's the wood bases that aren't doing it for me. Re: Makeover assistance 14Sep 27, 2010 8:36 am Yep, I agree about the natural timber look needing updating with paint. But the shades are just all wrong, wrong, wrong. I think I'll buy two or three different shades from Target or K Mart and try them out, then return the ones I don't want. I might get the bases painted today. First I have to get another coat of stain on the tallboy, then I have an eBay purchase to collect and some handles to source for my drawers....
