Re: Never pass up a bargain 43Sep 12, 2010 7:11 am Stop laughing, you lot. You have no idea how much it pained me to do that. Today I'm taking to it with the sander. Can't wait to see what the raw timber's like under all the cracked and bubbling shellac. Re: Never pass up a bargain 44Sep 12, 2010 7:29 am kek Stop laughing, you lot. Can you still salvage the mirror? sorry to laugh at your expense Kek. It's in almost perfect condition - amazing considering its age. It just needs a couple of new supports - no biggie if someone's doing a restoration job anyway. I just hate to waste anything. Re: Never pass up a bargain 46Sep 12, 2010 4:32 pm Almost finished with the sanding and I've discovered it's cedar. Lovely smell... Re: Never pass up a bargain 47Sep 12, 2010 7:03 pm My chair is finished....FINALLY! I haven't done anything with the second chair yet - one of the legs is broken and I'm not sure if I'll bother repairing it. It needs a new piece of timber cut (beyond my skills) and IF I go down that road, I'll have to paint it, because the leg won't match the rest... Re: Never pass up a bargain 48Sep 12, 2010 7:18 pm I found my own bargain today. Back about 3 years ago when we first moved and planned to get a woodfire I asked Mum to keep one of the 2 tin trunks she had, for us when she eventually moved. Anyway when she was getting ready to move this year I asked her about them and it turned out she'd given both away! The last only a month before I spoke to her . arghh I've been looking everywhere for one since but the only ones I've found have been between $80-200 and often in not very good condition. So today scrolling through a local buy and sell page on facebook I came across this and discovered it was still for sale. $20 thank you thank you thank you. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Needs a good sand and repaint. but perfect for what I want. yippee. During Winter it will be a wood box and will sit next to the wood fire and in warmer months the lid will be closed and it will serve as a little table. oh and btw kek Love that beautiful chair. Re: Never pass up a bargain 49Sep 12, 2010 7:31 pm damn I've edited the post so many times but for some reason it's refusing to show. grrr Re: Never pass up a bargain 50Sep 12, 2010 7:35 pm kexkez damn I've edited the post so many times but for some reason it's refusing to show. grrr You must be tired.... your code was just missing the backslash in the end set of brackets... I fixed it for you. Love the trunk! They usually go for ridiculous prices too. Re: Never pass up a bargain 51Sep 12, 2010 7:57 pm thanks for that kek well I've still got one spare 15 yr old here. they've been really great kids but it will be nice to have the house to ourselves again. I promised I'd drop him home ( 5 mins away) and I fancy a glass of wine and it's 6pm! Re: Never pass up a bargain 52Sep 12, 2010 8:00 pm kek Almost finished with the sanding and I've discovered it's cedar. Lovely smell... $26 ... for a cedar dresser ... that's a BARGAIN... restored (with mirror) it could sell for $500-$700 I'm jealous of your cedar dresser, so I'm posting another restored item... My entry, Light Pendant, originally a reddish brown + green colour(disgusting), it cost $15 + 2 cans of spray paint $6 + one 2nd hand glass $2. It's hangs 825mm from the ceiling. For those who think I'm wasting energy the light only has three globes working (on purpose)@15 watts each Re: Never pass up a bargain 53Sep 12, 2010 8:07 pm kexkez I found my own bargain today. I think it looks great just as it is. .. Is that green the original paint? Re: Never pass up a bargain 54Sep 12, 2010 8:21 pm Love the lamp, love the chair, love the chest. My dad had a timber chest restored for my 21st. It's one of my prized possessions. Amazing what a bit of paint can achieve. I picked up a pair of brand new brass cabinet handles for $3 today and they're way too shiny. I'm going to spray them with some oil-rubbed bronze paint and see how they come up. As for the dresser, it certainly was a HUGE bargain. It's all sanded and has one coat of walnut stain now. I'll see how it looks tomorrow and decide whether it needs one more. Then I'm thinking beeswax to finish it... I figured out that the drawers must have originally had drop pulls, since the timber has been marked by the round back plate, and the holes are drilled above halfway up the drawer fronts. So now I'm looking for just the right thing... Thanks! To be honest, I'm a bit scared of using it. But then, I was very hesitant about Danish oil too, and that turned out to be a piece of cake. If I bugger it up, I figure I'll just remove it and go for some polyurethane instead. Re: Never pass up a bargain 59Sep 12, 2010 9:47 pm kexkez I found my own bargain today. The lady I bought it from had bought it herself planning to do it up as a toy box but then realised it wasn't a safe idea. DH doesn't like the colour and has suggested we paint it to match the fire which is black or at least grey/black. I won't be touching it for a while so he'll have to live with it as it is for now. That sucks! Hope it all works out. Good to move away from steel anyway for all your reasons, but it's also thermally poor. 16 17888 |
