The cupboard is more likely 1920-1930,but well done on getting the second chance offer, you got a bargin
Looking at what you have restored already it will come up "BEAUTIFULLY",can't wait to see the end result.

Congrats I think you're right, kerry-ann - we found a manufacturer's stamp on the underside of the shelf, and then Googled and found an ad in The Argus from 1926. I love playing detective... The tallboy is finished (well, I'm over it anyway, so I'm calling it finished ). Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ The rest of the story is over here. The stamp could be an established mark, look at the drawer dovetails if they're wide and evenly spaced it means it was machined; post 1940's, tight, thin and unevenly spaced dovetails were common during the 1900-1930's. Were the original knobs screwed, glued or capped from inside the drawer? There are no drawers on my cabinet (the tallboy was made in 1980-81 or thereabouts, I bought it new), so no dovetails. Just the Payne's Pty Ltd stamp - the address is Victoria St Brunswick, and (of course) it has the proud and racist proclamation "European Labour Only". Hmm. Must check the underside of the dressing table drawers for a manufacturer's stamp.... Re: Never pass up a bargain 107Oct 02, 2010 9:01 am TheOK If anyone can recomend a place where I can find matching drawer pulls I'd be grateful, I've tried Schots, Recollections and Steptoes, they all have a similar type, but they're too large. Hey TheOK have you tried here http://www.heritagebuilding.com.au/ They are in Sydney but might be able to help. Cheers Bel Still not in. Don't ask!? No $$$ here.... But I'll look out for the books - thanks! I always forget about the library... I've just removed the latch from the cabinet door (it's buggered) and noticed that the ply panel is a bit warped. I've decided to paint the lower part of the cabinet anyway and just stain and seal the top, so I'll replace the old ply with a new piece of whatever (ply, MDF, whatever's cheap at Bunnings) - won't matter once it's painted. I think a magnetic catch is the go too. The old latch was a pretty crap design. Luckily the hinges are OK, so I'm just cleaning them up and should be able to re-use them. I have plenty of paint (hurrah for mis-tints at $1.50! ), sealers and stains, so I can afford to shout myself some new hardware and still keep the total cost well under $50. I still haven't finished my cupboard, but the top's all done and I sealed it with WAX. Talk about easy. I gave it one coat of stain, then three of Danish oil (because I'm in love with that stuff ), then decided to be brave and hit it with some wax. I can't stop touching it....so smooth.... I used this stuff: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Smells very pleasantly of eucalyptus oil too.
