Browse Forums Finishing Touch 1 Jul 23, 2010 1:27 pm I'm a bit of a newbie at painting and need a bit of advice about whether painting my timber kitchen cupboards is an option to refresh my kitchen. We have a pretty good kitchen but outdated timber look and i'd like to paint the doors instead of replace them. Any advice from you painting experts on what paint to use? How much work i'm in for? etc. (I'd also like to get rid of the splashback tiles and replace them but that's a whole other post lol!) forgive me if i've posted in the wrong section Re: I want to paint my kitchen cupboards 2Jul 23, 2010 2:15 pm You can definitely get paints to paint over laminate!! I've not done it myself before however check out these links for inspiration: http://www.centsationalgirl.com/2010/03/painting-kitchen-cabinets-etc/ (American site but loads of inspiration for DIY'ers! and http://community.i-do.com.au/index.php?showtopic=143292 (Australian thread) Building an Eden Brae Saville 27 http://karry327.blogspot.com/ Building thread https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=44247 Re: I want to paint my kitchen cupboards 3Jul 23, 2010 4:25 pm I painted ours in the last house as they were pink laminate!! It was a 2 part process as there was an undercoat first. I bought the paint products from Bunnings and it was quite easy, just time consuming!. Here is a pic of the finished job, I was quite proud of it (We got new benchtops too) Blog: http://bluemistkids.blogspot.com "Never be afraid to try something new. Remember, amateurs built the ark, and professionals built the Titanic." Re: I want to paint my kitchen cupboards 4Jul 25, 2010 6:29 pm I did this in our last house. The kitchen cupboard doors were tasmanian oak, good quality but a quite dated look. We took them all off, cleaned (scrubbed) them thoroughly with sugar soap solution, lightly sanded, primed, then painted with 2 coats of full gloss acrylic. I think the colour was Taubmans Burlap Beige. I used a combination of brush and small roller, the finish came up really well. We put on new brushed nickel knobs which made the cupboards look fantastic. We also replaced the (salmon coloured) benchtop with squareform laminate, and replaced the tiled splashback with glass. We replaced the appliances with new stainless appliances. The whole reno including appliances cost under $5000 including labour and it looked like a whole new kitchen. Re: I want to paint my kitchen cupboards 5Jul 25, 2010 7:33 pm Hi Kandrock, Welcome to Homeone. Most reno jobs are a lot of work. Think about the satisfaction you will get when it's done and your cupboards are looking fabulous. If they are timber, you can just give them a sand down and and undercoat and topcoat. It will look fabulous! Don't forget to post some piccies. www.themaxbuild.blogspot.com forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=20717&start=300 www.leahspaperpassion.blogspot.com Re: I want to paint my kitchen cupboards 6Jul 26, 2010 2:29 pm thanks all! that's really helpful, Hels your kitchen looks stunning. we have black granite benchtops so I don't have to worry too much about them - i just don't like all the wood everywhere it's very old fashioned.
