Paint question for Michelle

Hi Michelle,
You've mentioned on other threads that you prefer Dulux over some other paint brands. Was wondering if you can tell us what sets it apart, and are there any other brands you prefer?
And which paints would you not use? I'm not sure how to judge the quality. We are thinking of using a Taubmans interior paint.

Ok eimaj….Dulux is my preferred….Taubmans is my second preferred!!

Wattle is now a very superior paint also…….other than that, I’m not interested.

Now this is not to say other brands are no good, it’s just that Dulux supply me with A4 colour swatches. My clients love them; it’s so much easier to get the feel of the colour when you look at it on an A4.

I also use nothing but Dulux in my home, I’m very happy with the application and performance of the paint. Taubmans is in my office, as they had the colour I wanted to use.

I tend to stay right away from Solva…..and why….I’m not that happy with the finish.

If you’re looking to use Taubmans……thumbs up from me!!!! :z:

So what about Bristol and White Knight as they are made by the same manufacturer as Taubmans (Barloworld Coatings)? Is there a difference?

Bristole are Taubamns. Taubamns acquired them a while back.

So yes…still up there in the top ranking!

White Night….not sure of, they are really only used for decretive painting, you don’t use it to paint your whole house with. It sits in its own category.

sorry, but Taubmans, you know where they use it, for cheap company houses. You will look For Haymes stright after Dulux no doute. than i would go solver than these crappy brands.

Bristol paint in my opinion is garbage.

Their paint coverage is terrible and even the painters I speak to say stick with Dulux.

Superior coverage with a superior pain.

I have a rep from Bristol coming to my house next week, so I stand to be corrected

I never use Bristol…..I only ever use Dulux or Taubmans.

I painted Taubmans in my office and I was very please with the application and coverage. So I don’t have a problem with it.

I have however seen Solva…..It wont be on my recommendation list.

But for me…..Dulux is the go.

dulux is the best to work with and very good coverage, second is Haymes these two are one of the best paints in the market. solver flat ceiling is good and they have psu underoate wich is really good. but i wuld stick with dulux and haymes. but if ur bugdet is low, than go with solver. forget about Taubmans or bristol. cheap building companys use these product.

I know Taubmans gives a much better discount than Dulux, perhaps that’s why the project companies use them over Dulux.

Nobody has offered any technical reasons what makes a paint better than others!

I have a customer who's a rep for Aalto paints. She (obviously) reckons they are superior, with really intense deep colours in their range.

Hey Ash, I have all of Aalto colours at home, they look fantastic!!!

I’m about to give them a go next year!

Might answer the question about the quality of paints later, I’m supposed to be working!!! :shock:

Nobody has offered any technical reasons what makes a paint better than others!

In a nutshell:

It basically comes down to pigment. Pigment is expensive, but it is what gives coverage. Manufacturers try to strike a balance between minimum pigment vs maximum coverage, and replace pigment volume with other fillers to 'spread' the pigment further.

How well that balance is struck will determine the raw material cost (to the manufacturer) and thus influence the retail selling price, versus the amount of coverage you get. Some do it better than others.
