Browse Forums Finishing Touch 1 Jun 23, 2010 9:50 am Hi everyone, I am new to this forum and very new to renovating, and would welcome any tips and advice! I am renovating a thirty year old home which has unpainted exposed beams (cathedral ceilings) - I have no idea what the ceiling is made from it looks like some sort of pressed wood, it's not cork - I've had two attempts at painting over the ceiling but the tannin bled through and after receiving advice from the local paint shop was advised I would have to use oil based rather than water based paint - I've had another go and this appears to be covering a lot better. Originally I thought I would leave the beams in their natural state as they had never been painted, now I'm not so sure - I've thought about it so much and stood gazing at the ceiling so often I've lost the plot and need some expert advice - should I paint the beams or leave them do ya reckon?? (I'm such an amateur.) Thanks so much. Re: Exposed Beams 2Jun 23, 2010 5:53 pm you could sheet the ceiling and just paint it, the rafters/beams will be underneath if you ever decide to go back to that look Re: Exposed Beams 3Jun 24, 2010 8:46 am Hi Kris welcome to the forum. Do you think you could get a photo to show us? viewtopic.php?f=13&t=1272 Bel:D Still not in. Don't ask!? Re: Exposed Beams 4Jun 24, 2010 9:38 am Thanks for your responses Bel and Dukekamaya, I did think of having the ceiling sheeted but can't financially at the moment so thought I would hide the ugly ceiling under some white paint - my camera is on the fritz so can't get a photo to you at the moment. Ah well back to ceiling gazing for a short time and then make a decision one way or the other and get on with it. Thanks again. Kris Re: Exposed Beams 5Jun 27, 2010 1:25 pm A photo would really help. We have painted beams on a raked ceiling in our house and it looks great as the room is very light and bright. I love exposed beams but I know they can sometimes make a room look gloomy with their darkness - so it does really depend on the room/ceiling height/light in the room etc. It also depends on personal taste. I think the fashion at the moment though would be to paint them. Re: Exposed Beams 6Jun 28, 2010 9:04 am Yeah I was really reluctant to paint over the beams 'cause there would be no going back - I painted in between the beams in the laundry and one of the bathrooms (they run off each other) and you're right the ceiling still looked gloomy - I've now started painting the lot and it makes a huge difference, quite refreshing, light and airy. Thanks for responses. THanks , l got a licensed building inspector to look at the rust, he said its just surface rust and it would take many years to become a problem because the beams are so… 22 24916 if l cannot get a sandblaster would a sander with sandpaper be better then a wire brush 4 5520 |
