Browse Forums Finishing Touch 1 May 10, 2010 1:53 pm Hello All, I am new to homeone. I'm currently building a new house and have been asked by my builder to select the paint color for the architraves/skirtings, front door color, wall color, ceiling color. I definitely want white paint through out but not quit knowledgable about where to put gloss/semi gloss paints. I have the following in mind: skirtings (assume this is the bit that goes into the corner where the floor connects to the walls, and the walls connects to the ceiling - please correct me if i'm wrong) - Dulux Natural White B1 - semi gloss Architraves (i assume that this is just the window area) - Dulux Natural White B1 - semi gloss Wall Color (all walls except for bathroom/toilet) - Dulux Natural White B1 - Flat Wall color (bathroom/toilet) - Dulux Natural White B1 - semi gloss Ceiling color (throughout whole house) - Dulux Natural White B1 - flat In terms of the internal doors, what color should i paint them? should i stick with Dulux Natural White B1 - semi gloss (enamel). anyone got any suggestions on the front door color? The door i have chosen is attached as a file. I think i just want to let it stay as this color. any suggestions would be great. I am in real need of help. this is my first house, and i'd love to make it look as good as possible. Re: Advice on internal paint color 2May 10, 2010 2:11 pm Hi lplau & welcome to the forum, The skirting is the bit between the floor and the wall whereas the architrave is the bit around the door. The bit between the wall and the ceiling is called a cornice or coving (as far as I know, but I'm certainly not an expert!) With regards to color/gloss/semi gloss etc goes I think that most people (at present) go for white ceilings and cornice but a hint of colour on walls, skirting and door frames (say a pale grey, beige or sandy colour etc). They say adding color warms the house up a bit as opposed to having plain white. Of course as with everything in your home it's a matter of personal preference and what you like the look of. I suggest you look at some display homes and see what takes your fancy. The finish also is a matter of choice but what I'm having in my house is semi gloss on skirting, architraves (door frames) and doors with matte everywhere else. The ceilings and cornice will be white but the remainder all the same colour very pale grey. Oh and you may want to match your front door colour with your garage door colour or maybe go for something bold and different. Hope that helps, Good luck Re: Advice on internal paint color 3May 10, 2010 2:52 pm thanks grom40. the reason why i have chosen white is because the house is gonna be small (96m2), and I want to bring more light in, and make the rooms look larger. I also love the simple clean clean colors that white walls have. I had a look at the dulux range, and the natural white color to me was the one which had a nice balance between warmth and cold. Do you think semi gloss is good for the bathroom? what about low sheen (not sure what this is- but i assume this is something that has lower gloss compared to semi gloss). Re: Advice on internal paint color 4May 13, 2010 8:57 pm Hi Iplau, Natural white is a great choice for a white. Most commonly the internal doors will be painted to match the architraves & skirtings, so in your case they would be semi-gloss if this is what you prefer. Just one thing to note: Ceiling paint is always matt but walls are usually low sheen. Please go to a paint shop & check the finish of the paint type that your builder is using. Low sheen is not at all shiny, but will not show up every mark & scuff as quickly as matt. Good luck with your house!
