Built the Eden Brae Cambridge 34 Family with Boston Corner Facade Re: Boxed art - jewellery 2May 02, 2010 8:59 pm Huh, I've been flirting with a similar idea myself (DIY wall 'art')! Well, not exactly jewellery, but some other bits that are not flat and can't just be put into a normal frame. So I figured I need a fat frame, one with depth, but have not been able to spot it anywhere. Anyone knows? I've seen cut out paper frame inserts in various sizes and colours at photo shops - they sell them separately to the whole frame, so that's one component done. Price range from 1 to 5 dollars generally (depends on size). Just need to find some nice cheap frames separately, and "fill items" to your liking ... BTW, do you remember the prices you've seen for the similar stuff? My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: Boxed art - jewellery 4May 02, 2010 9:16 pm Lex - With regards to your question about frames, sometimes you can be lucky to find shadow box frames at $2 'type' shops. It's just a matter of shopping around...and often, as stock does tend to change. You can also find them at good scrapbooking shops as they are often used for 3D scrapbooking pictures. Southies - I have seen similar in a framing/picture shop in DFO in Moorabbin, Melbourne, but I didn't look at the price tag...sorry! And I haven't seen any online either. Re: Boxed art - jewellery 7May 05, 2010 6:26 am If you want to DIY, check ebay for your jewellery. use Karen hill tribe silver or thai silver as your search terms and you should find heaps. If I remember the sellers name correct, I used to get a lot of supplies from Shiana, they had some gorgeous stuff a few years ago when I was into my jewellery making. The framed jewellery pieces I've seen (earrings, necklaces & hair decoration) are quite elaborate & more like something worn in a traditional manner. No way I would be paying that much "just" for decoration. DIY will be the way to go for me ... thanks ladies!! (so they are called shadow box frames - thanks for this tip too, Stormy!!) Make your own shadow boxes, it's easy. I framed all my embroidery pieces myself, absolutely refused to pay the prices framers wanted to do them. Just buy any old frame - I was always on the lookout for bargains and bought frames "just in case". The best and cheapest by far were framed prints from discount outlets or op shops for anywhere between $5 and $20; as long as the frame style is right, you just chuck away the awful print. Then you need some foam core board (art supply or craft shops), some masking tape, a hot glue gun, a stanley knife, steel ruler and cutting mat. Maybe some brown paper if you're fussy about making the back nice and neat. You can use thin MDF or other timber, but foam core board is much easier to work with - no sawing required. You construct the box sides from the foam core board, glued and taped at the corners and then glued onto the reverse of the frame. Mount the artwork on the backing, adding some fabric or paper if you want a specific coloured background, then tape it all together. Cut brown paper to fit the back and tape again. You'll have to add some picture wire or a hanger of some sort too. Even easier: If what you're framing isn't all that bulky, you might get away with just using spacers between the frame and the backing. Again, you can use foam core board, just cut into thin strips. Use two or three pieces stacked on top of each other if you need a deeper "box". If you're placing a mat against the glass (recommended), you don't have to worry about being precise with your cutting, since it won't show anyway. Glue the strips together and to the back of the frame, then you use masking tape and brown paper to fix the back to the frame - use some glue as well if it's a heavy frame. It's much easier than it sounds. Cheap too, especially after the first. I can whip up one of these for the cost of an el-cheapo frame, since I have all the materials and equipment handy. Thanks for the inspiration, Southies (and kyton ) - I'm going to haunt market and shopping centre jewellery stalls and see what I can find.... Re: Shadow Box Wall Decor 11May 09, 2010 6:06 pm Hi Southies, Here's a link to a similar supplier in China but the minimum order quantity is one - they have wooden frames though. http://artforestpainting.en.alibaba.com ... _Arts.html Fik Re: Shadow Box Wall Decor 13May 09, 2010 6:31 pm kek, I don't think I'm capable of creating my own shadowbox, particularly when I know that it won't look anything like what I'm after But thank you anyway for the detailed instructions.
