I used to drink Earl Grey years ago, but it's a bit TOO flowery for me now. Might have to try the lady. onc_artisan Being a tea-holic... You're so right about the boiling water. AND the thin cups.... You're the first man I've ever struck who cared about the cup. Mugs are definitely for coffee! No sugar or milk for me any more. I like the unadulterated flavour. Re: Q. How do you make your tea taste better? 5Mar 23, 2010 8:37 pm You are so right about the thin cup no mugs for tea here and I like to add the sugar before the water goes in so it disolves quickly and makes it's way around the cup and thence not sitting at the bottom Lady Grey is more floral than Sir Earl....buts I'm loving it Re: Q. How do you make your tea taste better? 7Mar 24, 2010 12:24 pm I collect antique Royal Albert china, I have about 80 teacups, not to mention teapots, serving dishes etc. It's a bit of an obsession. And I use them frequently at afternoon tea parties. A few tips... use good quality leaf tea (I like a French brand called Mariage Freres), store it in airtight jars. Pre-warm your teapot (fill it with hot water and let stand for a few minutes). Use water that has not quite boiled, over boiling it takes all the air out of it. Don't reboil water. Use water from the filter jug, not the tap. Add the tea first, then the milk and sugar, never add the tea to the milk. Make sure all your cups, spoons etc and very clean, but don't clean your teapot out with detergent, just rinse it in hot water and let it air dry. My afternoon tea set up: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: Q. How do you make your tea taste better? 8Mar 24, 2010 1:22 pm Mishb - that looks gorgeous! My mum also collects the tea sets - not just royal albert though. I disagree with the boiling water. Some green teas loose their delicate flavour when scalding hot water is used. For green teas I always let the water from the kettle cool for a few minutes before using. For a lot of black teas - scalding hot is fine. I agree about warming tea pots and cups. Also - always use filtered water and a fresh boil each time - I never re-boil water for tea (spaghetti and doing potatoes is ok! ) Another leaf tea drinker here also - prefer that to the bags (though I do use bags when I'm lazy) After 4 years - we're in! Re: Q. How do you make your tea taste better? 9Mar 24, 2010 2:00 pm Mishb that is AMAZING! I'm so in awe of your Super Tea Party setup - that's one hell of an obsession My lawd... I'm speechless. What lucky friends you have I don't like the taste of tea, tastes like stanky water with crushed up plant then again, I drink weak coffee and I like it so milky that it needs to be microwaved, so one could successfully argue that I have ZERO class and refinement That doesn't stop me from wanting that adorable little teapot + cup set of yours though kek... nawww so cute! Re: Q. How do you make your tea taste better? 10Mar 24, 2010 2:14 pm Absolutely stunning Mishb!!! What time did you say I could drop in again?? In answering Kek's original question: "How do you make your tea taste better?" I would tip it down the sink and open a bottle of Shiraz! I'm not a tea drinker (nor coffee) and doubt I ever will be. I 'forced' myself to drink lots of raspberry leaf tea to induce labour when my Son was overdue, but that has put me off for life....and was a waste of time! I had to add about 3 tablespoons of sugar and half a lemon to give it flavour other than resembling old dishwashing water!!! My hubby often has herbal teas when he has had his quota of coffee for the day, and I joke that he's having a cup of 'Toilet Spray Tea'....coz that's what it smells like!!! I don't get pleasure out of drinking any tea or coffee (pass me the red wine anyday), but I can understand why it is such a pleasureable experience...especially after Mishb's gorgeous arvo tea setting!!! Closest I think I'll ever get to tea (which is to say, about as close as the Earth's magnetic poles). Re: Q. How do you make your tea taste better? 12Mar 24, 2010 4:21 pm Tea is definitely an acquired taste. Coffee too, I guess. I love my herbal teas ...peppermint is just the thing when my tummy is upset ....licorice tastes good (and I'm sure it's good for something) but stinks out the pantry, so it had to go ....chamomile is soothing .... and dandelion root is handy for a quick fix for fluid retention. I don't like the fruity ones though. Darjeeling is my favourite "straight" tea, but green is what I mostly have. With jasmine. Oh, and I love chai with vanilla - but not with milk, bleurgh! Stonecutter, I must try your "not quite boiling" technique for my green tea. I just assumed it should be made the same as black tea. I hate it kept in a thermos and all stewy though. Double bleurgh! Mishb, your tea table is divine! The teapot is Royal Albert Old Country Roses, isn't it? Lovely! My Mum has that one... Re: Q. I do like your green tea set too, Kek! I'd LOVE to have you as a guest! (you can drink gin out a teacup ), and to get your impressions of my house. I haven't had an afternoon tea in our new house yet, I am waiting for my china cabinet to be repaired (the door got broken in our move), it's taking forever. So I haven't unpacked anything, it's all still packed in boxes. I am eagerly awaiting the first tea in the sitting room, by the fire. Re: Q. How do you make your tea taste better? 16Mar 31, 2010 7:40 am At work I have loose leaf green tea (sencha) with a hint of peppermint in it - very nice! I've got really nice glass tea cup which has it's own internal strainer type thing and a lid so you put the tea leaves in the strainer thingy that sits inside the cup and then after a few minutes remove the lid, turn it over and the strainer then fits into the lid to sit and I don't end up with liquid on my desk It's very nifty! Also agree on the not quite boiling water for green tea! I add some cool water to reduce the temperature before adding the tea leaves.
