Browse Forums Finishing Touch 1 Jan 09, 2010 1:09 pm Hi everyone, Firstly - Great forum! I have been lurking and taking on enormous amounts of good advice and knowledge these past few months. I am wondering if you would all be so kind as to provide some suggestions and advice to me! I am building a modern highset beach cottage on the bay and am quite taken with a taupe/grey weatherboard scheme to compliment surfmist roofing, guttering, roller door etc. I am a FHB on a very tight budget so I want to get these things right as I will not have the funds to fix it if I hate what I choose! When I have access to a scanner I can upload my plans to give you all a better idea of the house design but for now I'm just wondering what some of the "in" gray exterior colours are that I am seeing and loving on houses at the moment. I just cannot make the match on the Dulux site as to what they could be! I also imagine that as I am having such a light roof that I need the right shade so it doesn't look washed out. Any input will be very much appreciated. Thanks! Re: Dulux Gray - Taupe exterior weaterboard colour suggestions 3Jan 21, 2010 8:20 am We are using Haymes paints when we build. Maybe will help you to see the colours you want and could take to Dulux to colour match. Haymes have wheel samples that you can put together with other colours to see how the blend. Really a big help in choosing colours. Check their site out. There is a colour called taupe/grey colour on the colour wall. It has 6 tonings with it. Polar Bear to Keystone. I think worth looking at one of the shops where they are sold. http://www.haymespaint.com.au/haymes/colourcentre/ A balanced diet is chocolate in both hands. If I can't make a decision with Dulux I think I will flag a few from there and take with me to my colour appointment for them to match. Leebuild - I borrowed a fan deck a few days ago and have flagged a few colours out, I am quite taken with Dulux Dreyfus, it appears to have a brown tinge to it on the computer screen on their website but on the fan deck I thought it looked more grey? (although it could just be that my eyes have become square from looking at them all!) The excellent thing about the fan deck is that it does give you some indication of the tones of colours that you might not otherwise pick up when looking at just one, a few that I had picked out as possibilities, really were browns when put next to the common greys. Does anyone have any large exterior walls painted in Dreyfus? Now that would be a great help!! Re: Dulux Gray - Taupe exterior weaterboard colour suggestions 5Jan 24, 2010 10:09 am thanks honkey ill go sus one out. i have been tossing up now with a dulux colour that is called monk its not grey, dont now how that happened its similar to dune but darker. i am finding it hard because we are having a dark rook ( artist ink ) blk. I really like greys but we are meant to use solver colours but nothing stands out. now we just need the rep to turn up today to sign the contract. Re: Dulux Gray - Taupe exterior weaterboard colour suggestions 6Jan 27, 2010 7:30 am Wow leebuild I love monk! I agree that would be a lovely complimentry colour for fences and for me - balcony trims etc , hope you don't mind if I pinch it for my short list Do you think it would be a bit dark for an entire house? I wonder what it would be like in half strength hmmm Re: Dulux Gray - Taupe exterior weaterboard colour suggestions 7Jan 27, 2010 1:59 pm no prob i found on the forum from someone else but cant remember who. not sure how dark it will look have been told that colours look lighter when painted on houses but not quite sure. I have a friend who has dune middle of the day her house looks quite dark but morn and afternoon looks really light. its so hard! Re: Dulux Gray - Taupe exterior weaterboard colour suggestions 8Feb 07, 2010 3:51 pm I'm pretty sure the colorbond site has suggestions with Dulux colours to match their products. People make one happy, not houses? I do not think so. Houses are more to be trusted than people. Not quite sure on the exact placement but something like this perhaps: http://i910.photobucket.com/albums/ac304/ms_builder/FrontElevationScheme2.jpg The light grey parts are supposed to be surfmist and the white is going to be a white white (not sure on dulux colour yet though)... Colours are too hard, im annoyed by them at the moment Re: Dulux Gray - Taupe exterior weaterboard colour suggestions 10Feb 20, 2010 2:37 pm Wow Msbuilder I love your house!!! I think the sections you are using monk create the perfect balance. I need to get excited about my house again, it's been a gruelling few weeks of ups and downs, my beloved little dog became really sick and we had to put her down (I discovered I am one of those crazy people who takes 2 weeks of work to mourn a pet!!!!) But I think it is good that I have something like this to focus on. Re: Dulux Gray - Taupe exterior weaterboard colour suggestions 11Feb 22, 2010 7:49 am Aw thank you! I hope it comes out in real life just as good! We will soon see, the rendering should be finished by the end of the week and maybe it will be painted by next week (weather permitting). And so sorry to hear about your dog! Dont worry, I will be one of those people if anything ever happened to my dog. I am that bad that already I dont want to get another dog if something ever happens to him because I know how bad its going to be if anything ever happens to him. Re: Dulux Gray - Taupe exterior weaterboard colour suggestio 12Mar 03, 2010 7:26 am Do you have a thread with your build Ms Builder? I would love to see your progress and see what monk looks like in the flesh. I just loved it when Leebuild suggested it and would love to be able to use it on my own house to contrast with a lighter grey, but I don't think I have any defining areas, the design seems much better suited to one colour otherwise it may look silly. I'm thinking of working it on the balconies though. I need to scan my plans and upload, as I am very open to suggestions!!! I see you are in helensvale, I hope you did manage to get all you needed to before this rain set in!! I know what you mean about the attachment to the dog. I had a very strong, abnormal attachment to the one that just passed, so I got another one hoping it would ease the pain when the time did come! (not expecting it to be so soon though, she was only 6!) It has definitely helped having another around though. Re: Dulux Gray - Taupe exterior weaterboard colour suggestio 13Mar 12, 2010 3:05 pm Dont know if anything has been picked yet b ut we had a last minute change of mind and went with Dulux Malay Grey... I think the grey has had two coats, but it may have only had one: http://i910.photobucket.com/albums/ac304/ms_builder/2010-03-12-11.jpg http://i910.photobucket.com/albums/ac304/ms_builder/2010-03-12-4.jpg Bit hard to get a good photo with the scaffolding, but hopefully it helps! Hi Alex, Thanks for the reply again. I had a chat with the builder, he said he will use primer, then hydrotec which comes with colour and sealer as well.
