Browse Forums Finishing Touch 1 Aug 05, 2009 5:57 pm I am currently sanding back all our door and window architraves and repainting to match our picture rails. It is a huge process because who ever painted before has slapped on about 80 coats of super high glossy cream paint which takes forever to sand off. anyways. So I am using a brush as they are too small to roller (and I doubt that would work anyway?) and I'm using high gloss paint, but they are appearing very, very streaky - you can clearly see the brush marks and they aren't nice and smooth at all. I'm very disappointed with the finish. The picture rails came up very smooth and nice, but the architraves are doing my head in! Is there some way to ensure a nice, smooth finish with a brush? Am I doing something wrong? I do not want my house to look like a DIY mess. Thanks for tips and advice. It could also be the brush That being said IMO its easier to replace the archs with pre-primed MDF mouldings than hours of sanding etc. The old architraves may be meranti (aka Pacific Maple) which does not give a very good paint finish. Re: Painting technique - what am I doing wrong? 3Aug 06, 2009 7:58 pm I had exactly the same problem when painting all the archs in our new extension even with having put new mdf thru out - I actually found that part of the painting which was done in 30-40 degree heat in summer came out better than the other part I did about 6 weeks ago - in the end thou basically I changed brushes quite often still not happy thou, so I still have a bit to go and I'm going to leave those bits till Summer ! I was using gloss enamel (clean up in turps stuff!).
