Browse Forums Finishing Touch 1 May 11, 2007 7:53 pm We are about to start painting our new house and was hoping to get some tips from all the wonderful people on here
We are going to prime the walls with an oil based paint and then paint the rest of the house in a low sheen finish. A guy at the paint shop told us of a product to mix in with the paint to help stop fungus growing - has anyone heard of this and is it any good? We are planning on slightly sanding the walls first and then wiping them over to get rid of dust. Does it sound like we are OK? Also what/is there any rules with feature walls? Not sure if we want any, but if we did what is the general consensus - on a place where the most light catches, on a wall facing the door in the room? I know it is hard without seeing the house, but really want to make sure there is no rules for this! Thanks Re: Tips for Painting a New House 2May 13, 2007 8:34 am WW2B,
Heres a link that will give some tips on the prep of painting, it’s a good one so give it a good look over! http://www.dulux.com.au/html/painting/p ... _tips.aspx Below is Dulux’s “Which Paint to Paint Where” section. http://www.duspec.com.au/duspec/QuickSpecSearchServlet The paint to stop fungus has been around for a while now. Its very good, mostly used in wet areas of the home….ie: bathrooms – where there is lots of condensation and little ventilation. This is what creates the fungus and mould to grow. I would certainly look at using it in all your wet areas. Sanding walls and wiping dust off is a must in good preparation for painting. The best feature walls are ones that have or don’t have the following: 1) NO pieces of LARGE furniture taking up the whole wall, so that the effect of the wall is lost behind the furniture. 2) Walls that do not have doors coming and going from other areas of the home, any more than 1 door is too many on a wall. 3) A wall behind a bed is usually a great backdrop for fabrics and materials used in the bedspread and cushions. 4) Walls that are stepped back or protrude from the other walls are crying out be different. A feature wall will be the dominate wall in a room. Give serious thought to your furniture placement. Then think about which wall will benefit the most as a feature wall. This will be the wall that has the least amount of STUFF on it. Then complement it with a nice complimentary piece of artwork or mirror or something tasteful. Have Fun!!! Good suggestions for feature walls. Can the wall with a fireplace be a feature wall too? There's room for a fireplace with 2 long windows either side . The kitchen will be opposite this wall so a mirror may not look too good on it (as it'll reflect the rangehood). I would live to get your thoughts vp Re: Tips for Painting a New House 6Jun 17, 2007 5:22 pm This is my fireplace, cool colour on a hot wall.
I feel in most cases a fireplace wall is a perfect wall for a feature wall. I don’t have a mirror here, but one at the other end of the room. Perhaps a nice painting or print on the fireplace wall, you don’t have to use a mirror. I was considering some of the warm colours like burnt amber etc. .. but I like your idea of a cool backdrop for a warm fireplace.. Perhaps bluey-greyey-green... I mean slightly darkened lime green
vp Re: Tips for Painting a New House 8Jun 19, 2007 8:46 pm you know it coming when i get a spare 10 minutes
Re: Tips for Painting a New House 10Jun 19, 2007 9:31 pm Thanks Matt... I was after still more subdued version... perhaps better description would be greyish olive green.. I think one the posts showing Amber's house after moving in has that colour for the feature wall.
cheers, vp Re: Tips for Painting a New House 11Jun 19, 2007 9:36 pm its the green in www.ourdreamhouse.blogspot.com

If you have a room that gets all the afternoon sun and is hot, do a feature colour of a cool colour. If you have a cold room that never gets warmth, do a feature colour of warm, the deeper the better. This is a very warm colour below, but looks stunning on the wall. Re: Tips for Painting a New House 17Jun 20, 2007 7:43 pm I thought I made that clear? Not maybe?
A hot room gets lots of sun, a cool room gets next to none. Internal and External Building and Colour Consultant Online - Worldwide http://www.denovoconcepts.com Re: Tips for Painting a New House 18Jun 20, 2007 7:47 pm Ah - ok - I thought it had something to do with the actual room - e.g. bathrooms are cold (because of all the tiles). D'oh! Re: Tips for Painting a New House 19Jun 20, 2007 7:49 pm Don’t be too hard on yourself….I’ve been asked funnier questions!!! Internal and External Building and Colour Consultant Online - Worldwide http://www.denovoconcepts.com Re: Tips for Painting a New House 20Jun 20, 2007 8:37 pm I found the colour- its Bristol's Dustin-- pretty close to what I had thought..do u know if they can make it a touch paler if one requests?
Now I am having to finalise the fireplace.. the room as we saw in the display gets western sun with matchstick blinds appearing orange at sunset.. originally had a huge window (approx 2.4 meters) but I have requested 2 narrow windows instead of 1 large one (luckily just a swap- no $$). In our house too it'll be western side but the neighbour has a double storey so I wonder if its gonna be a 'cool' room'! I would also love to get your feedback on fireplace choice-- see my post in heatingand cooling section... sorry... I am getting a bit carried away and side tracked! vp Title: Expert Tips for Painting Your Own House: Insights from Brisbane Painting… 0 292 Just be careful with building stability during construction, that is when the structure may be weakened, refer to your engineering drawings for stability methodology. 1 7231 Thank you so much.
